The SDS rotary hammer channel. All about SDS plus their usage and some other drilling/bolting related garage science!
What's the best SDS rotary hammer? how does a rotary hammer work? What even is a rotary hammer? All this and more is covered in great detail, every week or two.
I'm also a scientist who works in R&D, so I have a keen interest in product design and some idea of what goes into making stuff work.
I may not know what I'm doing in the backyard experiments, but stay tuned and we'll find out together!

it’s nominal voltage vs max voltage countries have different regulations for advertising voltage 12v max is 10.8, 16v max is 14v, 20v max is 18v, 24v max is 22v, 40v max is 36v, 60v max is 54v and 80 max is 72v
and nominal is like the average voltage they all have a range depending on the battery level and if the tool is drawing power, if you own a 18v makita tool it will work with a 14v makita battery just not for long the tool reads the voltage that’s how they cut off before the battery fully depletes
I'm using the 2508 with the M12 UDEL-0B dust extractor and both work great.
Hello! Whats the fastest compact cordless rotaty hammer drill 2024? :)
Don’t suppose you know when the gen 2 m18 will be released do you?
Is it just me or do the batteries look like there not meant for that tool
CAN GET HERE NOW HOME DEPOT USA JUST NOT PAYING MSRP WILL GET WHEN ON A DEAL WHEN BUY ONE GET FREE Battery
Great info!
Too bad, they basically took a nearly full size drop motor design and slapped a M12 battery on it. I was hoping they would find a way to make one much smaller and lighter for working overhead making small anchor holes which is basically the ideal situation I'd want if I had an M12 SDS.
LETS GO!
I just recently picked up that small hammer drill to your left how long is the depth bar I'm in the process of making my own
Good job mate, love the review.
Appreciate it mate! Glad it turned out informative and not just dog shit. I got super lucky being able to buy this hammer so soon, so I wanted something out asap. Opened the box at 7, published the video at 11, gotta be a new recorded for me
Milwaukee also releases a similar 18v model dont about the weight it should be slightly stronger
Not great vs a small 18V. DHR183 is 1.8kg and does 12.28s @ 12mm. New M12 is 1.7kg and does 16.68s @ 12mm. I guess the Makita had a bigger battery for its test. Can you do a M12 2508 vs DHR183 with a slim pack? The M12 will have a decent battery advantage (6x Samsumg 25S vs 5x Samsung 15M), so it'll be telling if loses.
Yeah I'll shoot some shorts over the next week or so, will add it to the list. But I don't have a slim pack battery for Makita 18v, just the regular 4,5 or 6's
@@BoltahDownunder we can only get 1.5Ah in AU, which sucks. I got mine from cashies for $20
Hand digging a tunnel through a lava flow using these..

A thousand years into the future archeologists will be really puzzled as to the purpose of this stone artifact of early AI era
Hopefully you ll do a more in depth review along with some numvers compared to the other drills
Yeah I've got some plans but I need to see if I have any of that same concrete left! The big test runs all got done in the same batch of concrete, which had pretty much run out but there might be enough left to try one more drill
@@BoltahDownunder alright then, thank you very much
Lets goooo, you are the maaan!
These old brushed cordless tools have so charm but I would probably never use them today :)
Would the DCH263 be able to efficiently drill 19 mm holes? I'm looking to put 16 mm rebar (x30) in bedrock (granite).
Yep the 263 would be ok for that, if a little slow. A 19mm hole is 2.5x more area then the 12mm I was drilling, so it'd take about 2.5x longer. A good quality drill bit would help too.
@@BoltahDownunder : Thanks a lot!
If you need to drill 10mm then just pilot it at 5mm and then select the lower speed setting on the box for the 10mm. It wont break.
Just got one from Hownot2 my main complaint is it has no attachment point for carrying it on a harness at height. I JB Welded a rope bracket from Home Depot on it to be able to clip it on my harness hopefully that holds up over time. Mainly wanted to replace using a blow tube while drilling so I can keep a mask on and not get dust all in my face every time I use the blow tube.
Nice. Did you see my carrying solution? Can't remember how much I showed it in this video but for small things like this a use 2 zip ties: one around the tool and another through the first in a loop
Thanks, a great video comparsion!
Flex is $129 usd on Amazon tool only.
I have the makita dhr183z. On their website its featured under products with aft. But in the manual i cant find anything about it. Theres no info whatsoever on aft. Do you know if it has it?
Great review. Makes me realise now that I'm glad I purchased the DCH 133, and at some difference in price too. Happy days !!! 👌
Can you turn off the hammer function on this
hello what is your opinion about makita dhr183 vs dewalt dch172 ?
Yes, it suck dust and small gravel.
When in doubt, always choose horizontal motor (L shaped) rotary hammer.
263 is a bit slower. But it is cheaper than 293 I chose 263 and found that it has more vibration than 293 If used for a long time, it will hurt my hand But the speed of the two, there is almost no difference I think skipping to 417 will see more differences. And I think I'll buy 417 soon.
Hm.. so compared with a similar tool from another respected brand that does NOT make this noise, does it suggest the motor or control module is inferior?
Bloody legend! I couldn't figure out which one to choose, the Makita rep offerend me to try some different ones for a week instead of explaining what I was looking at. Your video's have been an absolute beaut. DHR182 it is! Perfect price/power ratio; way out performs the rest.
I’m a sparky and use the 12v. Its more than enough
Great video! Sold on the longboi.
What do you think is the best sds rotary out atm for chiseling rock and concrete sub 400 new or second hand? TIA
fantastic review, i don't understand why it has few views. Thank you
I bought a mini chain saw a few weeks ago. Great for small jobs around the yard. My philosophy; look after it and it will look after you. BTW Always remove battery when placing fingers near chain for cleaning etc.
Thank you for your good-as-usual video. For what about Einhell/Parkside I have (had) a couple of their instruments. First, a 12 V cordless screwdriver (do not know if you name it this way down there) which does its job honestly and seems lasting. Second, a 12 V hammer who *did* its job honestly for some four or five years, then died in a second this summer. Now, Parkside started producing 12 V brushless tools. I recently bought a drill, an alternative saw and an angle grinder (76 mm disk). Still rather cheap, haven't tried them extensively yet. Notice that Parkside "produces" also a 20 V line of tools. Hope this helps.
If Utsav a 3/16 bit you don't need a rotary hammer drill. They're more for big task. When it comes to a 3/16 bit yhe faster it moves the better it performs
333 is bullshit because of the e clutch and anti rotation do not buy, lightest pile of sh** ever you’re welcome
So answering the quick chuck question as i one the fhx myself, i think is all about adaptability. I usually use the drill for some soft metal and being able to use standar metal bits is a plus. And i dont have to carry one more tool.
thank you for the review. Einhell was big piece of crap a few years ago and also it was (maybe still is) manufacturer for Lidl (Parkside) back then. I had a few tools and it was very unreliable. This new line looks usable. Do you have any experience with 18GA brad nailer from Einhell/Ozito (EU name FIXETTO 18/50 N)?
I think nowadays grizzly tools is the manufacturer for parkside tools, at least that is true for the performance line (the "pro" line)
I bought this for the attachments, genuine Makita accessories cost more than this whole unit
Genius! Do they fit ok?
@ Sure did, I wanted the suction holes to fit the back, worked fine.
Einhell is used by the Mercedes F1 team, though as a sponsor. So the quality should not be too bad I guess
Other than leaf blowers, how many electric tools do they actually use in F1?
Yeah I've seen that. Very interesting as they market themselves as DIY grade, unless there's also a pro-grade line?
@@BoltahDownunderNope,they also have professional tools now.
Einhell Herocco is a good tool, tho the battery rattles more than ideal.
Yeah I thought so. The big one already has a very sticky battery port after only using it a few times. Like it took a good 30 seconds of struggling to get the bakery out. But then that big battery will be rattling around more than smaller ones
The goat is back!!!
All hail SDS Jesus
@toolscientist haha exactly mate
Jeez I do one vid about a tiny supermarket chainsaw and Youse all think I died or something
Nice, would you also test its bigger brother with 2 batteries?
Yeah sure if there's enough interest! They don't do that one in Ozito so I'd have to find an Einhell dealer that ships here
@@BoltahDownunder ok interesting, I thought their lines were 1:1, it will probably come in ozito variant later
It's a bit strange here because they only deal through one store, Bunnings, so I guess that store doesn't feel like stocking it all? They have 2 smaller cordless SDS and a few big corded ones but not the 2 battery hammer
HR001 when working and pressing the hammer drill, increased speed is activated. That is, the hammer drill has an increase in speed under load and if there is no load, the speed is less than stated.
Wow really? Amazing. I must try it
@@BoltahDownunderIf you insert a smooth chisel into a hammer drill, turn it on at speed 4 and then take the chisel with a gloved hand, the speed will increase. Or if you turn on the hammer drill and then clamp the upper damper of the shock absorber, the speed will also increase.
Good lord that Milwaukee vac is not long for this earf... according to tool g0d Dean don't even bother bringing it to a service center when it shits the bed
Nah, 7 years old and still going strong, aside from the trigger which is wearing out. She handles the dust fine, just gotta get a new filter every year or 2
