How to Debug a CoAP Network Error in Zephyr Using GDB
Переглядів 61Місяць тому
Recently I encountered an error related to CoAP in a Zephyr RTOS project. I hadn't seen this error before, but was able to quickly track it down using the debugging tools built into Zephyr. This video walks through the process of using GDB to set a breakpoint where the error message is printed, inspect the CoAP packet in memory, and turn that packet into a human readable format to establish why...

My dudes - call it "Buzz". It's what the IoT alert does to tell you that the machine it's monitoring has started doing. Psyched to follow this through to completion!
Neat !
thanks for this !, question .. Can we permanently have the plug in enabled instead of having to manually enter the Project.SetOSPlugin("ZephyrPlugin") every time ? Also, I can see my serial output on a com port, but it doesn't come through in the terminal window (when disconnected com). I'm using the STM32F4 instead of your board but is it due to SWO or something perhaps ?
🇩🇿👍👍👍👍👍

is that our king from gtte?
Does the golioth firmware you are uploadinf to esp32 is a zephyr os?
Useful and consice. I have been using uVision and Eclipse for so long now I was fearing some major headaches with the move to Zephyr, but I feel much more confident after watching your explanation of those twoo tools. Thanks. I will have to check your Blog too.
The tests for spi, dt_spec, has LOG_DBG. How to modify files to get that output printed to the UART?
This seems very cool. Thank you for this. Are there any prerequisites for this training besides buying the nRF7002-DK board?
ohhhhhh snap. How am I just learning about this?!
Great to see you following your north Dan. Inspiring.
Not working : west espressif install usage: west espressif [-h] [-b BAUD] [-p PORT] [-e ELF] [-n EOL] {monitor} west espressif: error: argument command: invalid choice: 'install' (choose from 'monitor') Can you provide the latest steps
Espressif changed the way you install their packages. `west blobs fetch hal_espressif` should work. See docs.zephyrproject.org/latest/boards/xtensa/esp32_devkitc_wroom/doc/index.html#prerequisites
Would it be possible to create a video of the opposite of this, the encoding part?
Very nice project and video, THX.
Thanks Chris for asking questions and clarifying some of the confusing terminology. It is very helpful for viewers for the presenter to not assume that the basics are familiar to the viewers.
Hi, I am trying to understand overlay in zephyr (completely different from Linux). If zephyr compiles the dts file to static header that drivers can use; then I can safely assume that overlay files are compiled (with main device tree source file) to static header file with updated values? There is nothing dynamically update going on (it shouldn't be possible since values were statically induced in drivers), right?
Great video. Can we use J-Link plus with Ozone for debugging RTOS based projects?
Do you mean the J-Link Plus device? That should be possible! Chris (who made this video) was using the Plus Compact.
@@GoliothOfficial Thank you
In the description the link to the "real piece of hardware" is broken [an extra ")" at the end of the link ]
Very nice project, THX to Rodrigo.
Nice intro to ZBus!
You're using Linux Mint. Kudos! You can use Segger J-Link Edu and Ozone for free in non commercial applications.
You can’t use the J-link EDU with Systemview, it doesn’t have a valid license.
How have I not stumbled across this before! Great content, thank you. Also, could you write down the full URL of the blog post in the description?
Ah ha! Just had the stub of the article title in there, it's now fixed. Thanks for the heads up!

IoT trash can? As a cyber security student currently enrolled in a white hat program at UB, the IoT is a massive security concern because there's so little in the way of security on it. What does this thing do?
More info about it here! blog.golioth.io/iot-trashcan-monitor-a-golioth-reference-design/ Agree that IoT security is always a big concern! All Golioth devices are "secure by default". If you're ever interested in chatting about it, please start a discussion point on our forum! (forum.golioth.io)
Really cool! Thanks for the tips! Any thoughts on SEGGER Monitor Mode Debugging for “non-invasive” debugging? Have you guys covered that in a blog post or video?
Don't think we've covered that before, would love to know more!
If i need to use this dongle just as a transceiver for my Raspberry Pi, do i need to just plug in to the USB port ?
It needs to have the specific Open Thread firmware (described in our guide) on it but then it's just plugged into the RPi.
@@GoliothOfficial thank you
what about log_panic and going in to fault we are not able to track why log panic is happening
Very nice feature, TNX Golioth .
Nice video, TNX.

Nice video and project, TNX.
Awesome video guys! Now I want to learn more and try this for my next IOT solutions! All the best from Argentina!

good video. I would recommend when sharing the screen zoom into the screenshare/code editor things isn't really clearly communicated if the audio and code isn't is sync with the video.
Thanks for posting. I'm doing a beginner IOT project and want to eventually setup OTA updates.
Awesome, welcome to the wonderful world of connected hardware :) Are you using Golioth or planning on in the future?
I wish I watched this video 3 months ago. Good way to consolidate my own learnings. Great video, thanks Chris, dziekuje Marcin
Glad it was helpful! Are there other Zephyr topics you'd like to see covered?
@@GoliothOfficial if you could do something on AT modems and MQTT subsciribe, but using the ZEPHYR stack rather then the one built into the modem firmware.
hey man,thanks a lot !
You're welcome! Are there other Zephyr topics you'd like to see us cover?
@@GoliothOfficial of couse
@@ocyberestagiario We got you covered, stay tuned!
I'm sorry did I just attend a rave?
We're just so excited about RISC-V! 🥳
Ha,feedback before was that it was too "boring" without music, so we livened it up. I just swapped it for more something a bit more chill. 🎶
Ok. intersting. If I understood correctly, Golioth is in the same space as AWS IoT hub and Azure IoT. It provides an embedded C SDK that will enable you to communicate to an endpoint in cloud. Also, their cloud enables you to read logs and do maintenance, like OTA update. Not sure where de data is stored (database), but it looks like you can decide your cloud provider. I'd would be interested to watch a video where you setup a quick data pipeline with an ESP32 with the Golith SDK + a MQTT broker on a Linode server.
That's right! Golioth would be the cloud you'd reach for to manage devices instead of other solutions (though we work well with others through our RESTful APIs.) Today, we provide fully managed databases we call LightDB & LightDB Stream (more videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLXGira7Qd83BitZ_AiBThQoC4QunVqOVI.html.) You can access your data via our RESTful APIs (docs.golioth.io/docs/reference/api-docs.) In the future we'll also be introducing options to use other databases so you can be in complete control of your data. During Beta some of the features we discussed our not currently available. The ability to deploy to different clouds is on the roadmap. Also, we don't support MQTT as a protocol (we've launched CoAP) but plan to add MQTT in the future. We love feedback! Feel free to share more questions here or drop us a note via devrel@golioth.io.
I went to your website, and I still can't tell what you're doing with Golioth. > "A platform designed to fit your hardware, not the other way around. With Golioth, experience quick, easy, secure cloud integration at compile time." What does that even mean?
We were inspired by your question and made this video. Please let us know if you find this useful! ua-cam.com/video/AkEKJ873tsk/v-deo.html
@@chrisgammell3502 Thanks Chris. I will take a look at it. Keep up the good work and I wish you the best with this project and contextual electronics.
It should be clarified that it is the Rust compiler that does the type-checking that prevents incorrect asignement of pins. The types are simply defined in the HAL , and the verification happens at compile time.
