dang it, I've missed it again!
No worries! If you have any questions you wanted to ask, ask now :)
Thanks so much love this comparison
You are so welcome!
Did you notice the missing pixels in the sky? 😂
This made me laugh :)
Thanks Alex for this video. Insightful as usual Samir
My pleasure!
This is a lovely explanation. I will use this when people ask about my job 😊
Glad you enjoyed it :) Apparently, it’s not common knowledge.
Congratulations on the great work. I have a debt using vmware (bare metal) with windows server Standard. I need to license the virtual cores (vcores) or physical (host)?
Please elaborate on the detailed configuration. Also what licenses do you have?

Great Channel.......many things i had no idea. MS licensing is covulated
Thank you! It's overwhelming even for experts.
You do not need CALS for EAS that comes with software assurance
Where did you get that from?
@SAMexpertTV from our microsoft accounts manager and CSAM. We use Windows Data Center in our environment. I will ask them again and share the details
@jkaduda the only official rule book is Product Terms. Your account manager cannot change the rules. EAS is subscription Enterprise Agreement. It changes nothing. Your Windows Server CALs probably come bundled inside other licenses like CAL suites or M365 subscriptions. But they are still CALs. The only exceptions are Azure, SPLA, and “license included” CSP Hosting services.
@jkaduda and BTW the knowledge of Microsoft licensing inside Microsoft is a joke.
@@SAMexpertTV They talk about it here, i will approach the products team
They likely got a good discount when they migrated everything. They can't and should not expect discounts every time they renew. The ask for more discounts while taking into account existing spend is not realistic. Would they offer discounts based off existing spend to their customers at every renewal? I highly doubt it. Talk to AWS or any other cloud provider similar to Azure. You will get the same deal. So at the end of the day the enterprise you are talking about is asking for more than needs to be given based off the market standard.
Thanks for your opinion. All views are valued!
Yo ho ho, it's a pirates life for me
Drink up me ‘earties, yo ho!
Thank you for such great and knowledgeable videos
We're really glad we can help!
Hi Alex How to buy a perpetual license (paid over a fixed term and perpetual license ownership) as opposed to the licensing model where you pay an annual cost indefinitely? This was an amazing video. I’ve watched it twice but unable to find answer to my question.
I assume you are talking about SQL Server licences. Perpetual licenses are available through CSP: www.microsoft.com/licensing/terms/productoffering/SQLServer/MCA However, please watch this training once again and see if you may need a subscription license instead. Because perpetual SQL Server 2022 licenses lack VM mobility, SQL Failover, and even virtualisation rights. If you are in Europe and you want to run SQL 2019 or earlier, virtualisation rights can be obtained by buying a second-hand license. Also, perpetual licences require one upfront payment, there is no "over a fixed term" payment option.
AI?
LOL
can you explain more bit confusing😅
Click related video. It leads to a full training
3:12 most possible reason would be to catch as many (potential) customers as possible, and especially get those who still run on perpetual licensed products like Office. Lowering the entry obstacles gives more people ability to try the new hot sh*t :)
I’m just not sure about the value of it for an Exchange-only subscriber. How do you use it?
Awesome video, Let’s say I have 5 esxi hosts and 250 servers (VMs) how should I go about licensing those VMs. Windows server 2022 standard.
There are at least 2 basic scenarios: Windows Server Datacenter without (or with) SA, and Windows Server Standard 2022 with SA. But that’s just the start.
With this density of VMs you will probably pay less in the first scenario but it depends on the number of cores in the hosts. You need a calculator.
@@SAMexpertTV so you think one datacenter 16 core would suffice?
@@javalex561 have you watched the video? You need to license all cores in the cluster.
Hello, Do have a way to check if E5 Security and/or Compliance functionnalities are used ?
I don’t believe there’s a single tool that can do it. It’s not impossible but Microsoft doesn’t make it easy.
i was late but now im looking the video. thanks the video guys!
Our pleasure!
Thanks Alex for these videos, such eye openers. I wanted your advise on WS2022 licensing. I'm planning on building a new VMware cluster with 4 hosts, each has 2 CPUs with 16 cores each. There would probably be 60 VMs running in this cluster. What's the best way to license these VMs with Windows Server 2022 Standard? If I understood this, I can do 8 x Windows Server 2022 DataCenter 16-Core (through CSP) to cover all cores and use the license key to activate all WS2022 Std VMs! or would it be cheaper to buy WS2022 Std for each VM? and how many to cover all 60 VMs? mind you, I would be using 2 vCPUs for each VM, some would have 1 vCPU and others would have 4 vCPUs. much appreciated!
Per VM, you would need subscription licenses. 480 single Standard licenses. You need to do a calculation yourself:)
Thank you for the great video! Very clearly with examples. You are a passionate speaker sir, and therefore I had to stop and pause a few times and rewatch some of the videos LOL. Nevertheless, love the videos.
You're very welcome! :)
Could you please share a link from MS Website or document which confirms that System Center can be licensed on VM Level.
It’s in the Microsoft Product Terms.
Thank you, i just sat with my licensing partner and even they where confused as to what the heck to do with our sql servers docker containers. This clarified things.
It changed since this video. Not that it has become easier though. Check out SQL licensing training.
Microsoft has never sent to you (Service Provider) the copy of the verified LM form :D.
It was one of the [advertised] versions of the process but you're not the only one who confirmed that Microsoft had never sent providers verified forms.
Question a device CAL is asign to a specific device and only that device? or it means that I can only form 1 device at a time, I mean I´m now on PC1 but tomorrow I´m on PC2 do I need a Device call for PC1 and another for PC2?
If you use two PCs and you are the only user, I would go with a User CAL. But if you are already stuck with Device CALs then you need two, one per device.
Don't use Microsoft SQL because of this reason It is proprietary and closed-source It is paid Just use MySQL or PostgreSQL
Sun? In the UK? Bro outed himself....
LOL, you got me! :)
Yes. Yes he is
:)
From a Windows admin since 1993: No wonder companies / people, at least in the country where I live, are leaving the Microsoft model. Licenses are so complicated it takes the fun and eagerness out of trying to get it right. And I mean that sincere. Tech admins as well as legal department do not want things overly complicated or they start looking at alternatives, even though they might be more expensive = paying to get it more simple in life.
And that's right. I agree with you, it has become too convoluted.

Great session!! I think you are able to move/upgrade to a different or higher M365 plan and still keep Teams. It’s in the Partner FAQ. Will double check and post the link. Also, possible use cases for Copilot for M365 for Frontline workers could be in Teams (details on missed meetings with action items) and Outlook (mail summarization, prioritization , ability to follow a meeting if you can’t make it- because you are typically not at desk). Cheers!
Thanks. Now I want to find the faq. It’d be interesting to see if it only applies to upgrades. :)
Great use cases, thank you.
😂😂 truee
If in one cluster we have 23 Vm, where 20 vm is using standard os and 3 Vm using datacenter os. It is still required to license entire infra with datacenter or we can do use both Std. and Dc based licensing sepately in a cluster
Since version 2022, it’s no more a simple question. There a per vm option now.
hey Sam, I am the sole user of my Windows server 2022 with an admin accout. I have no client or nobody who share my server. Do i still need a CAL? Thank you
Not sure who’s Sam. But yes, you need CALs because you use it for work.
Hello, I have purchased 48 Dell servers, each with 2 sockets and 28 cores per socket. They were supplied with OEM Windows Server 2022 Datacenter licenses per server, covering all cores. I am utilizing VMware vSphere for virtualization. How can I license all of my Windows Server 2022 virtual machines? I have been using the OEM keys to license each virtual server, but I have run out of activations and can no longer activate additional servers.
Hi. I would ask Dell. They must support OEM licenses.
If hyper-threading is enabled in the virtual machine, then do I need to consider logical cores for the windows server license calculations?
Yes. Because each virtual thread will be then supported by one physical thread. And that’s what they want you to pay for. But why would you want hyper threading inside a VM? It makes no sense.
@@SAMexpertTV Oh, that's interesting. Can they insist on it because none of their documentation mentioned needing to license the virtual threads? At least the ones that I looked at keep mentioning virtual cores unlike SQL Server where they made a mention of threads. Unless I missed one major documentation that clearly called it out?
Check where they talk about virtual cores supported by more than one hardware thread. It’s enough.
@@SAMexpertTV Gah, you're right. How could I have missed that! Thanks.
Great, you made it easy!
Glad it helps!
Thank you for the very informative video, Alexander. What about the Product Terms applicable to the downgraded version? For example, if SQL Server 2022 is downgraded to SQL Server 2019, is it governed by the rules for version 2022? Is that correct?
Correct. Terms are the terms of the license, not the running version.
