Thanks for the video! I have also found these quite difficult to single pin pick due to the odd feedback.
I just got a lock pick set for Christmas and just happen to own this lock. I haven’t been able to do it with a pick yet, but it usually takes about 10 seconds with a rake.
What do you do when you feel counter rotation on a pin? Loosen the tension and try again on the pin?
Yep...😬
I have great problems opening this style master lock. 😢can’t seem to get anywhere with it
Great pick 👍
What are the numbers on the key? I just lost my key to my R80 storage lock. Thanks.
@@garyhall6294 hi thanks for your patience. I just checked a couple of my Brinks keys and the numbers seem to correspond to the bitting, for example the one for this lock was “2312” and seemed to match. so they won’t help you with your lock unfortunately. Good luck!
What number is on the r80? I just lost my storage key. Thanks.
Good pick 👍that lock is a super fun pick, and it functions so smoothly. It's my favorite 😊
@@AmericanPicker83 yeah it’s got a very satisfying pop and slide when it opens 10/10
"something not much" describes perfectly what you feel from this lock in terms of counter-rotation.
Great now I need a cute little 72/30 to go with all my 72/40's 😂
mmm, great choice of locks! The 72/30 and even the 72/40 can come with the ABUS keyway or that standard Y1. The 30mm variant has a dead core, but it is still very fun to pick because of the spools inside.
this takes less than 1 second to rake
Congratulations. They're really difficult to pick.
The classic American 1100. Great job picking it. 🍻
Great 👍 Perfect picking And I'm also not love to gut locks 😕. Never 😊 But sometimes i not have choices too 😕 🤷 Good luck 👍
@@Tipa-fw2rz i might have to gut my Lockwood so that I can progressive pin it. Not looking forward to it.
Perfect demonstration of "abusitis" Pin one is a guard pin and is standard. The rest are spools. The typical binding order for these is 1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 1-->open You get a false set each time you set 1, lose it each time you set the next spool and drop one each time you set a spool. That's the way these open unless you start dropping spools too then you have to start doing different binding orders but you'll almost always drop one every time you set another spool
@@shadroid yeah abusitis. Classic case. 👍
I'm just starting out & finally got my 60/40 open yesterday, what a frustrating lock. I'll try bok as you suggest to see if it picks different next time around. Nicely done
I think people should start picking these right after the masterlock 3 or 140. They're way easier than their belt ranking because despite the security pins they give great feedback, the pins usually get really hard to lift if you're oversetting and you can feel it when they do. They're great practice locks not because they're difficult but because the security pins are easy to read.
@@shadroid true the feedback is great. I’ve really enjoyed my picking lots of different low level locks so I’m a bit odd in that respect. But yes for most people jumping up to these is good.
That lock almost broke me. Nice pick!
@@SeeStuDo cheers. A good milestone one!
The 4140 is where I have started picking.. lol I found that with a quad rake it opens within 5 seconds... has taken a bit to learn single pin but now have that down to about 15 seconds... on to the next lock!
@@DaleSander68 Nice. 👍
1:41 I tried picking this lock for the first time and had been having some trouble with it. I gave it a lil jiggle right when you said and it popped open immediately! Thanks!
Nice! Great stuff!
Awesome!!! Haven't tried Abus yet, but can't wait!! Keep on pickin buddy!!!🔒🔐🔒
Cheers!
The M1 was the first love lock I picked "in the wild". Masterlock though it be, I was happy I pulled it off. A dirty aged weathered lock has its own pick resistance and feels like both everything and yet nothing is binding at the same time. Nice crisp clicks aren't guaranteed. All pins might start out feeling overset and you just push till there's a change in the crunchy or gummy feel and maybe its set maybe its not. The difference between picking outdoor locks and sitting at a desk picking a new one out of the package is about like playing golf vs hitting balls at the driving range, or baseball vs t-ball for the American audience. There's overlap but it isn't really the same thing and both are fun.
That does sound extra difficult. I sometimes forget about these locks being actually used for... you know... locking things up. :)
innnnn any case. haha. Brought this lock on day 1, raked it easy so moved on. A year later and a year more experienced, I can't for the life of me SPP or rake it open! I've been at it for over an hour now which is what landed me here on this video. This should humble me but its only made me furious.
Has yours got tough bitting? I haven't touched mine in a while, but after I made this video I got much better at feeling its angle inside and that made it much easier. I think it might be a matter of feel... I've never picked up a rake in my life so I always find it fascinating those locks that are clearly super easy to rake, and the SPP can be very frustrating.
@@every-lock-is-unique2117 Never? Not even once? Like EVER!?
@@every-lock-is-unique2117 Oh man I finally got it. Was being way too heavy handed. I didn't even see you asking about the bitting. Bitting wasnt anything drastic, was purely a skill issue.

I find the Abus 64 and the 64ti the hardest to pick out of these 40mm Abus padlocks
@@wolfganggrojcig2528 do you mean the 65? Yes the keyway makes it tougher than the 55. I’ve got some videos of the 65’s coming.
Always fun. Take care.

Nicely picked and explained! Love a good Abus lock!
Thanks very much!
Very nicely picked. The Abus is such a fun lock to pick. Thanks for this demonstration, cheers
Thank you! Abus are quality. I feel slightly bad having so many of them on the channel, but that's just because they're awesome.
Hey so I'm currently working on the same lock, can you please tell me the best pick/tension tools to use thanks, also do you have to start from the deepest pin and work your way upto the lock base? Thank u
Hi, You should be looking to use a .040 thickness top of keyway prybar on this, with a deep hook in whatever thickness you have. I can't remember the binding order on mine, but you should be ok starting from front or back. You'll find one standard pin in there, so you'll need to pick that one first in order to get your false set and start working on the spools. Enjoy!
Really good review of tensioning and tensioning tools. And like you, I've discovered after too much effort, I gravitate to just a couple hooks too.
Yeah that's the way. I'd like to try a couple of new profiles to see how they go, but it's true it can mostly be done with a couple of favourites.
Nicely done! These are interesting locks indeed! They have a closed shackle varient that has to be picked both clockwise to unlock one side then counterclockwise to take the shackle guard off so you could get the chain it's connected to off. They've been on my radar for the future...
Oh that sounds like a weird mechanism for sure. That would be a interesting one. I think I've only had to pick one lock counter-clockwise before. It's definintely a different feel!
Well done. Interesting lock indeed. 😃👍🐾🐈⬛👏
Thanks. I know it's "10 security pins" but I didn't really notice the serrations on the keypins at all. I only remembered afterwards.
Very nice picking. Cool done ✔️ I have two p.locks of this brand just with another keyway . I think this lock is good 👍 👍👍🔓👏💯☮️🌎
Thanks, Yeah I'm a fan of BW and Abus both.
Thank you, this helped a lot!
Awesome thanks! :)
Great picking and explanation of what's going on with those pins!! One of these locks are on my future list. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks. I'm a bit of a BW fan even though I've picked through most of their catalogue at this point. I hope to pick all the way up to an Alpha if I can get one without bankrupting myself...
@every-lock-is-unique2117 I haven't picked one yet myself, but have liked what I've seen of others picking them! Yeah, it gets pretty expensive real quick lol! I have quite a few locks but no complete series of them! I really like how you've done that in your videos!
What a great talkative lock. Week picked and described!
Can you answer a question for me please. How can you tell when you overset the pin, and whats the best technique to use you pick to lift the pins bro
Firstly, I overset pins all the time, especially when I'm feeling out a new lock I've never picked before... I want to feel what the key pins feel like when they're up past the shearline. If you make it part of your routine you'll start to feel how different they are. You'll also not be able to get back any false set, and all your other pin stacks will go spongey. So there's a few indicators. Try putting more tension. Don't listen to the "least tension possible" advice I've seen around. Give a lock the most tension it can handle... which will be different depending on the lock, the security pins, etc... Then you'll get those real nice clicks and it'll all be more clear.
Perfect intro to TOK, methods and strategies
Thanks very much! :)
Noob here. Am handicapped and can't use my right hand other than one finger on the tok tensioner, which usually slips out at the wrong time. I'm looking for one that has teeth on the side, so it digs in. Any ideas. am trying to pick a 570 and it's driving me nuts. TIA
Hi there. I was thinking about your question for a while. Do you pick with the lock held in a tabletop vice? So you manoeuver the pick with your left hand right? I don't know of any TOK prybars with teeth on the side, but you would likely benefit from having a larger than average collection of prybars so that you can select the perfect thickness for each lock you try. In my experience, the more snugly the prybar fits in the top of the keyway, the less likely it is to come loose at the worst moment. Good luck!
I use a vice I clamp on a table and is maneuverable. I pick with my left hand and hold the tok with my right index finger. So far, the lock that the tension bar slips out of is the master 570. Am determined though.
Great picking on that, all standards or not! Sounds like an upgrade is in store! It is a beautiful-bodied lock indeed, deserving of some better pins! Thanks for sharing that! Can't wait to see your upcoming LOTO's!
Thanks very much. Looking for a 71/40 now. :)
@@every-lock-is-unique2117 Very nice! Can't wait to see it when you do! I love your videos!
That lock put up some fight! I have a red ABUS 72/40 that also doesn't pick the "normal" way. Going straight #1 doesn't and only leads to oversets. After picking some spools in the back #1 will start to bind properly
That sounds similar, or at least that you had some deeper set spools that need a nudge before starting. i've got a 72/40 I like very much, it's a serious pick too though, like yours.
Also, what is the thickness on the white pick .15 .18 .25?
Hullo, That's .015. I got it from an Aussie pickmaker. Shout out to Bare Bones: bareboneslockpicking.com/product-category/0-15-thickness/
I have the same 1, and I can't do shit with it. That said, my raking and rocking skills are killa. My SSP game is shit. It's hard to teach yourself watching people online. Not you, but say lockpicklawyer 4 example.
I wish LPL still did some good content like in the early days... My production quality is poor, but I at least try to mention any aspect I find that might help pickers succeed. Good luck with yours!
@@every-lock-is-unique2117 Thanks bro, I appreciate it.
I have this lock as well and like you mentioned, very different feel to the dead core and shackle. Mine picked very easily as well, but it is a really beautifully machined lock.
I agree it's quite nice how they've machined it. I sometimes wonder if I've shaken a screw loose in my head - finding a padlock aesthetically pleasing.
Very nice! I have a couple like this, just not the brass ones... they can be interesting..
I know some people have more fun with these, I think I got an easy one so that's a bit unfortunate.
i was able to open the abus 55/40 easily with a jiggler key from the covert companion on covert instruments
enjoy.
Very well done! Great explanation of what's inside it due to the first feel! Nice picking! Thanks for sharing that! Is nice to see a lock of that size full of spools!
Yeah I love how I got a surprise even from this little lock. Awesome fun.
I'm envious, how quickly you picked this lock good game
Thankyou! Getting my practice in. 😀
I have a couple of questions please one can you wave rake it also how can you tell if the pin is set or when it's binding please explain thank you
Hi. This lock probably is rakeable but I don’t know anything about raking so I can’t really say. Binding is a bit harder on these types of locks in my experience. It must be something about the core binding up a bit. Try using your key to “wiggle” the core counter clockwise a bit, and then start your picking again… or use your tensioner to do it if you don’t have a key. Other than that, you should feel binding normally and you’ll get ok sliding from the standard pins.
@@every-lock-is-unique2117 ok bud, thanks alot. I will give it a try
Very nice work and explanation on that! These locks are beautiful! There definitely on my future fun list!!
Cheers! Yeah everyone should have an Abus 55 in their collection.
