Welcome to the Dave Benjamin (Benj) UA-cam channel! Home to a growing collection of video uploads. DBLM STEAM - filmed in Western Scotland, N.Wales, N.Yorkshire, locally and elsewhere in the UK. Preserved steam locomotives struggling up steep gradients, amidst quality scenery and sometimes at speed on the mainline. Nostalgic, atmospheric and worth viewing even if not a steam enthusiast. DBLM WILDLIFE - Otters, badgers, foxs, sunsets - Norfolk, Isle of Mull, Fenland and elsewhere. Genuine soundtracks, purity of the moment. And the DBLM COMPILATION, personal music playlist - an eclectic mix - with changes usually every day - including quality covers, live performances, treasured classics and raw acoustic versions - and featuring favourites Tom Misch, Sam Fender, Catfish+the Bottlemen, and The 1975, alongside less well-known artists such as the talented, evolving New Hope Club. D213 Andania - "The Christmas Cracker" (DBLM Steam)
#D213Andania #TheChristmasCracker #Class40
The Inter-City railtour from Wolverhampton to Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday 14th December 2024, filmed at Pont y Pant(1/47 gradient) and around Blaenau Ffestiniog station, together with a departure up the 1/43 climb towards the tunnel and a brief glimpse just before Betws y Coed. Hauled by preserved diesels class 40 (EE Type 4) D213 and class 45 (Peak class) 45118.
A very impressive operation, including a very smart turn-round at Blaenau and something of a miracle that the tour was able to complete the planned itinerary with the Conwy Valley only re-opening that very morning after the effects of the recent Storm Darragh.
Of all the diesels that were introduced in the late 50s and early 60s (some of the key replacements for steam that had dominated until the 60s) - then the English Electric and Sulzer Type 4s are some of the most special. The looks. The sound. The aura of just being in their presence! It was tempting to retain much of the discarded video of the engines just 'ticking over' - arguably a very rhythmical and comforting sound. Or maybe just nostalgia!
I hope you enjoy watching and listening.....and please forward the link to those you think would be interested. There is a link to the DBLM Steam Complete Playlist at the very end of the video - and also immediately below.

at least it polished the rails on the headshunt slightly
.......and maybe dreamt, for a few minutes, of heading to Trawsynydd!
It reminds me of a railtout I did up to there in 1984. 40047 plus a class 50, can't recall which one.
This day certainly had an 80s feel about it - the sound of the preserved class 40 and 45 - until you looked at the carriages. It will seem strange to say it - but there was a special 'warmth' to the atmosphere at Blaenau with the distinctive idling sound from each loco!
@davebenjamin5380 great video BTW, some really creative angles there.
@@garthcox4307 Many thanks. Pont y Pant was planned, Blaenau location with 10 seconds to spare, leaving Blaenau with half a minute and the last two locations were very much improvised. Climbing 50 feet up the old incline would have allowed me to capture the full sound of the 40 on the 1/43(instead of the carriage sound) - but impossible to achieve with such a tight turn round at Blaenau. Memorable day, indeed!
I was on the same tour A proper engine 40047 ex HM
@jonathanwood2465 I think it was called the Conwy crusader? Also had 40029 and d200 on other parts of the tour. And a trip on the Birkenhead docks railway, literally on a road side verge past people's houses. I bet that closed many years ago.
Brings back fond memories of travelling behind 40’s on the North Wales coast. Lovely video and great to hear that whistling sound.
Memories indeed, for me too! Wolverhampton High Level in 1966, a Fridays only relief to Newcastle on the ECML and one very special climb up to Talerddig possibly in the 1980s.
Good to see another of your videos. Good backgrounds, typical. Keep them coming in 2025
You might have missed a few recently....but apologies for the lack of wildlife videos, none since July - hopefully 'Four Seasons' will be made and uploaded before the year is out!
I need that mkcrophone u use, it sounds so gud even un wind, i need it
It's not just a great microphone ('Rode') - but an even better windshield - and the concept of the microphone being external with 2 metres of cable, hiding most of the mic in the camera bag to shield against any wind and yet still cover about 120 degrees. And a lot of experience to find the sheltered parts of a windy platform, avoiding the tamest blade of grass that could create extraneous noise - and, of course, a huge amount of luck!
6.00 minutes
Thanks for an excellent video, Sur Nigel and a Class 37 make a perfect combintion. I like next to the North Wales coast line on the Outskirts of Chester , but only get a short glimpse of any specials as they go over the bridge on River Lane, Saltney. You now have a new subscriber.
Heroic effort and a beautiful sight.
Has to be seen and heard 'live' to fully appreciate! One of the very best places in the UK to appreciate locomotives working hard and crews always on top of their job!
Great video. Last few minutes are spectacular
Encouraging to hear! I chose not to upload those scenes two weeks ago because the consensus view was they were sub-standard. It's a quiet type of locomotive (they are loved or disliked and a million miles from anything your father would have known in the east)
I will forever remember TAL-Y-LLYN as Skarloey
Benj, very interesting to watch, with the logistics involved on such a busy main line, all credit to Network Rail.
Interesting to observe it all at the time - and to treasure how lucky we are still to see such scenes!
I thoroughly enjoyed that David. Being local, it was fascinating to watch the logistics. Excellent sound as usual with your films.
Thank you Andy. Probably a one-off for me, capturing so much of the modern railway instead of pure steam - but it does show how lucky we are to still have steam active on the modern network.
Ello benj hru, thought id ask what camera do u use ? Cuz i think i recently bought the same one as you
Canon XA20, about 12 years old, now superseded by something similar. Expensive tripod, quality Rode mic and windshield.
@ oh no wayyy i just got the xa11 from 2018 super great camera
@@Welshtrainspotting2024 It will be a great camera!
Lovely. What a beautiful sight and sound.
Thank you. Greatly appreciated. A memorable autumnal day with great sights and sounds from the Castle!
Another great one David. Thanks for sharing. The sound really makes it.
Knowing where to capture the sound certainly helps, as did the lack of onlookers and the still autumnal air.
What a magnificent sight and sound
Indeed. There was a very special feel to the day. The still air allowed the sound to carry and the smoke lingered when the sound had faded. Leaves were falling, the autumn colours were radiant and we were heading for winter. What a great privilege to see and hear a Castle in mid November!
Majestic machines and breathtaking scenery: those long-range shots give a real sense of place, and you made best use of some near-perfect filming conditions. If I ever need to demonstrate how to put together a railway video I'll send them this: masterfully done - well done, Benj!
Treasured comments Robert, extra meaningful as I know your interests are wide and many and not restricted to the steam-enthusiast world. Experience and skill plays a part but luck with dry and calm weather, especially in the Highlands, is a major factor. Many videos feature the locomotive up close and personal - you'll observe my focus is often very different - I'm trying to capture steam in the landscape where before and after are as important as the main moment. Thank you!
Lots of excellent views. Wonderful . .
Thank you. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!
Great vid. Unique view of Tan-y-bwlch from 1:34 and then along to Creuau Bank. Looks a bit like the safety valve jammed open on K1 - wasn't really blowing off high pressure. Lots of valves to go wrong though . . .
Pleased you liked the video. Hadn't anticipated the siding being so full at TYB so scrambling a bit higher was last-minute improvisation! There was a memorable atmosphere at Rhyd Ddu as the K1's fire had to be dropped and doused down, and as a brief downpour sent onlookers to find cover - the combined crews worked together to get the train back on the move.
I dunno .... all those people on that gravity working, when three would've operated a 200 plus ton train back in the day, by running between their portion of the moving waggons. It's health and safety gone mad, I tell you!! Lovely clip. Fingers crossed "Welsh Pony" and "Taliesin" are back for next years' event ("Mountaineer" - either one - seems a tad overly optimistic!!)
I'm just treasuring the fact that the Ffestiniog's gravity trains are still allowed to run in our 'health and safety world' - in contrast to so many other areas of life where restrictions have greatly limited our freedom! But I'm pleased you liked the video....
They can take our Mk1’s, but they’ll never take our FREEDOM!
Good video Dave :)
Thank you Simon. Although not one of my best, made purely to mark Tornado's return....
Nice video Dave :)
Thank you Simon - a moment remembered for the smoke, sound and strong acceleration.
Brilliant shots, thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍👍
And Thank You for saying so - Thoughts and comments always greatly appreciated!
Lovely to hear some GWR barking on the Midland. Thanks for posting.
Yes - and you can't beat the bark of most things Great Western, Castle and King, Hall and Manor to name but a few. And yet I guess we are both LNER fans!
Most mainline tours that have diesel on back always have diesel help them out the station great film
Thank you. Hearing every bark of the departure from a mile and a half away was extra memorable! (That's the sound copied to the last 30 seconds of the video)
That departure will keep the fireman fit. :)
Duke and Mighty Mac haha.
Another great FR/WHR video, so much variety and great locations.
And also a really enjoyable pleasure to film such an event!

Epic !
Thank you! And a second video just uploaded from the FRs Bygone's event.
Amazing footage man, love the way u compose the shots
Many thanks. It's a very enjoyable experience filming on the FR and WHR - such variety in locomotives and scenery, gradients, great sounds and so much to capture!
Another excellent one. Thanks for posting.
Linda's whistle is so GWR!! Good job they had a fire lifting shovel.
It's hard to beat the sound of a GWR whistle - even though I'm an LNER fan and treasure the piercing shriek of a B1!
@@davebenjamin5380 I may be wrong here, but I think Prince's whistle could be off a "Streak". Fantastic filming by the way. Wonderful/creative views and sound effects.
@@cricciethcastle5077 Many thanks for the comments - greatly appreciated! I think I read that Driver Bill Hoole, of East Coast Pacific fame, was a Ffestiniog driver in the early days and that would explain the A4 whistle connection - maybe someone will know exactly which locomotive the whistle came from?
Lovely film, really like the shot of K1 and JS leaving Rhyd Ddu. I was a passenger on this years Snowdonian 2 so it’s really nice to see what was going on outside.
I'm pleased you found the video. When filming one of the Snowdonian specials it's always in my mind that passengers will come across the film and see it as a record of their journey! Rhyd Ddu was extra atmospheric with the heavy shower, all the smoke and steam around the two locos - and the industrious and very organised efforts of the crews to get the train on the move again.
Another fantastic FR video, great locations and sound, the railway that keeps on giving 😊
Thank you Lewis. There will be another FWHR video by next Tuesday - hopefully - featuring the Bygones weekend.
Fantastic video, I did wonder what had happened to the K1 as I was waiting for the train to pass the Fforest between Rhyd Ddu & Beddgelert and I took an age to appear! Your video explains the delay!
Pure speculation on my part but it looked to be a possible injectors issue - I later heard it may have been a valve that wasn't functioning. The scene at Rhyd Ddu was definitively atmospheric - a very heavy shower and both crews working extremely hard to deal with the situation - not sure how much the passengers were aware, apart from the lengthy delay.
Nice filming, and great to see such a variety of engines.
And thank you for allowing me to add your iphone footage of 29 and 2392 from Moorgates!
My mate was driving 34028!
You might just recognise someone at 6.05 into the video!
Beautiful steamvideo 👍🏻
Great trains in a beautiful landscape 👍🏻
Indeed. Always an impressive impact of steam in this part of Wales.
The amount of unburned slack being blasted up the chimney shows the poor quality of the coal compared with the Welsh black stuff in earlier times. I remember when everything was steam hauled. Watching a Manor attacking Talerddig on the eastbound CCE was always a thrill. In the late '50s/early '60s two thirds of the entire class were to be found in Wales.
I'm very envious of your Cambrian memories! I recall the last year of the Manors and journeys over Talerddig behind Standard Class 4's in 1966. Robinson D11s at Cleethorpes in the late 50s are ingrained on my memory but Talerddig and the Cambrian would have been extremely special.
The same "Benj" that used to volunteer on the TR in the 1970's???
And the same equally legendary Mr Davies? - originally from Watford or Kings Langley? Stories to share - Let me know and I'll give you a call.....
The first NNR gala I have missed in years due to me chasing steamers on another continent. Betton Grange looked superb. Thx.
Thats a name from the past on the talyllyn railway, i do remember john & janet cox(flower) and lot of the older volunteers.you may remember my uncle don Southgate. I try to visit tywyn once a year but glad to the t.r.is still as friendly as ever.also the younger volunteers are continually to carry the mantel for the future.i think there are many heritage railway who will struggle without proper training and not getting younger to become members and working volunteers.
I certainly do remember Don Southgate! One of a legendary group of volunteers/staff who helped the railway flourish back in the 70s and 80s! The Talyllyn retains much of its special charm as a unique narrow-gauge line.
Very nice. The Grange is a seriously good-looking beast.
And with equally impressive sound!
Very beautiful steamvideo 👍🏻
Thank you.
Nicely filmed mate! Love the class 37 feature
Many thanks. There was a good atmosphere. Good sounds, good variety, generally very good timekeeping, apart from a short break when a lineside fire had to be dealt with.
@@davebenjamin5380 6880 is superb! Saw her at the GWSR
Well done for capturing a typically excellent NNR show so nicely. Even D6732 and short freight looked good in its correct green.
And Thank You for making a comment - especially such a good one! I like to capture the best sounds, and the gradients on Weybourne and Kelling Banks are ideal for that. There is a unique characteristic about the Keighley and North Norfolk Gala events - both very different of course. And North Norfolk is extra special with its extensive panoramas between the sea and the heathland. I'm tempted to return before the Grange moves on....
@@davebenjamin5380 My pleasure. I missed the gala but enjoyed D5631 on Tuesday, and appreciated the 00 gauge layout at Holt between trips there and back. Cheers.
