    I dont look it but my dad is from Utqiagvik. My aaka was around 80% inupiaq. I grew up in the south and tho my dad showed me a good bit about our culture i still know hardly nothing about it i want to know more about our history our folklore our language our traditions.. just i feel like theres apart of me missing that i want to know about. This helped find more of that. There isnt a whole lot about us on youtube. We arent really representing ourselves on here. Understandable since AK is a vast untamed wilderness whete there are more important things to take care of but it would be nice to see more of us here):

    In western culture, theres things like, thimbs up/down, sticking out your tounge, and winking. What do you have to communicate these, if you do?

    These are so delicious. A coworker of mine made these (when I lived in Bethel) and I wanted to learn how to make them myself.

    I'm Inupiaq but grew up in the American Midwest and I didn't realize how much of this body language I picked up from my mom until I was older. I was constantly getting called out by teachers in school asking if I understood something--the only thing I didn't understand was why they thought I was confused! Turns out I was raising my eyebrows when I thought something made sense, and they thought it meant the opposite. Awkward!

    You have a very pleasant speaking voice. I also like the great way you broke down the steps of cooking the jam while providing a clear video of you making the jam so there can't be any confusion on what to do. I also really liked your detailed description of how the Berry tastes and it's links to Alaskan Natives. I hope your channel finds more success! 😁

    I’m inupiaq struggling to learn inupiaq language. I don’t live in Alaska, that’s why it’s a struggle lol. But I am doing Rosetta Stone until the university of Alaska gets back with me. A book I found is “once upon an Eskimo time” by Edna wilder. It is amazing!

    That was really interesting! I kinda wish the people I interact with most had that idea about personal space; I don't like people in my space. I also don't like making eye contact except with my family and closest friends, and I always just thought I was awkward! It's really fascinating to me how much body language and etiquette can vary between cultures.

    I grew up thinking I was from Yup’ik, found out today that I’m iñupiaq. Thank you for this video, a lot of the mannerisms like “yes” & “no” ive done without realizing it was part of my culture. This video has helped me reconnect.

    These videos are really interesting, I hope you make more. I grew up on/just outside of a rez down in the lower 48 & am considering moving to Alaska. I want to have some understanding of at least a few of the different tribes up there before I do make the move partly because it just seems like good manners, but also partly because watching well meaning white folk make fools of themselves regarding the tribe I grew up with makes me cringe & I don't want to be that guy.

    I am enjoying your videos and have been researching Inupiat legends/myths, language, culture, etc. Is there a tribal office that you know of which offers Inupiat educational services? I’d love to chat and connect with my ancestors’ roots.

    Many of the gestures are done other places as well. Though everybody tends to put their own flair on things. Many people here in southern Canada will be very uncomfortable if you look them in the eye for too long as well. It can be seen as a dominance and submissive situation at times. It is late for me currently I should be heading to bed lol but I plan on watching your other videos as well. Good luck with the channel.

    The malay culture from where i'm from have non verbal cues like this too, the 'kanuk' is called 'jeling' in our language, a big no-no especially towards elders. Nice vid btw

    Thank you for making this! I'm a young Native Alaskan, most likely Inupiaq, and it's really amazing to finally learn things like body language after being disconnected from my culture for so long. I'm also really happy that eye contact isn't an expected behavior because I was never very good at it. So thank you again for making this!

    As an autistic person I have always had trouble with a lot of the standard body language expected in the society I grew up in. It has been interesting to find out how many cultures, for example, have social "rules" about eye contact that are actually more compatible with my natural behavior (eye contact feels uncomfortable to me and I often will not make it unless I am feeling aggressive, it can be very disquieting for me to force myself to do it in any other situation). I think I actually make the same "no" face sometimes too. The mean one I think is common, especially among girls (flashbacks to middle school for me too LOL) - I definitely remember seeing that one done a lot. I am not so good at the gestures considered "normal" in my area but I do find it interesting how many seem to be semi-universal among those of us with autism - the hand flapping being the most well known. I have sort of different forms of it for excitement vs nervousness though I have no idea how to explain the difference. But we do seem to recognize it in each other.

    • @myarcticlife2981
      @myarcticlife2981 3 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment! I also find it super interesting to realize that a lot of what is 'normal' is actually just cultural.

    I'm originally from the (American, duh) South, and we're the same about keeping physical distance. OTOH, we'll stare holes through each other, lol. :) More personally, I do very similar things for "yes" and "no." I have no idea where I picked it up, but I enjoyed discovering the similarities!
