Thank you, Simon, this was really enjoyable to watch.
Thanks for watching!
Sorry , but all of this pictures I shoot with my Fujifilm x100s, or Sony rx100iv in lovely sunny day, even on my Google pixel 6 pro . Nothing special. May be the ibis is ok ... or?
Of course all those cameras are all good options. However the Ricoh is worth checking out for its larger sensor so tends to handle noise better and has better dynamic range. It also starts up super fast for quick out of the pocket shots, I can get a shot off quite a lot quicker than my phone so great for spontaneity. I can also shoot handheld until like 1/4th of a second due to the ibis. Your phone will do a bunch of HDR and noise reduction processing automatically to overcome some of its shortfuls. Personally I'd rather have control over that myself! It's all personal preference so there isn't really a right or wrong. The best camera you have is the one you have with you!
Im heading over there from the UK in June. I will have a 3 year old with me though so will have to see what i can get away with in terms trying to photograph everywhere haha
This is amazing
Thanks for the unbiased video 👍, nice comparison .
great video..im curious of your camera settings. ty
Depends on the photo!
Nice video Simon ! Question for you, I’ll be going to Japan in April and after seeing your video I’m seriously questioning what lenses to bring due to the crazy crowds. Does a 70-200 will be helpful or not? I own a 14 1.8, 20-70 f4, 24 1.4, 50 1.2. Planning to get or rent a 70-200 and maybe a 35 1.4. Hopefully you can help me out. I obviously not gonna bring all of them just a few. What did you bring ? Keep up the good work your videos are awesome!
With me I had a 16 - 34 F4, 24mm F1.4, 50mm 1.8 and 70-200. I used all of them at some point. If I had a 24-70 I probably wouldn't have needed anything else apart from that and maybe the 70 - 200 but it entirely depends what you plan to shoot.
I shot all of the first images in Kyoto of the Pagoda and first temple at 200mm if that helps!
awesome stuff mate
Love this video!
Thank you!
I was in Japan last month, every famous spot was full of (mostly)Chinese tourists dressed in Kimonos doing full on photoshoots. At first I tried to give them space but after a while I lose patience and just stand in their shot to get mine :S I don't feel great about it but they don't seem to care about taking up that much space either.
Yeah it's a tough one! Hard to get a shot in some times if you aren't a little pushy almost!
Great video! I live relatively close by Kyoto and since the crowds are back I tend to avoid the busy areas... but most of the times, just taking one street down the road from the busy parts is enough to be almost all alone again, it's so bizzar how everyone seems to be flocking to the same photo spots and then just... leaves, I guess? But super interesting to hear your experience!
Would be amazing to spend some time there and properly explore. I live in the Canadian Rockies and there was a stat along the lines of '95% of tourists don't stray further than 1km from their car'. So you don't have to go far to avoid the crowds!
SO many tourists in Kyoto right now. If anyone plans to go, listen when people say avoid the weekends... Luckily when I went, Kinkaku-ji was actually relatively empty and I was free to get almost any spot along the railing I wanted. Although I could see it start to fill up by the time I was leaving.
Great advice, we didn't even pay much attention to the days of the week was just when we ended up getting there! Definitely got quiter outside of the weekend.
Thanks for sharing the insight in composition. Brings back memories of visiting Japan
Appreciate you watching!
Awesome vid Simon! man those crowds are giving me anxiety! I'll be going to Japan in April, what lenses do you recommend? I didnt think bringing a telephoto lens would be useful but with those crowds i think i might have to.
Hey dude, I actually shot a lot with a 50mm lens. A lot more than I thought I would. But the amount of times I said 'I wish I had a 24 - 70' was a lot! If you have that range you'd be good for 90% I'd say. But something around 50-100 was super useful.
Hey Simon, great video. My thoughts in-regards to etiquette is that when you are in particular parts of the world that are over populated or saturated with tourism, all rules and etiquette that often requires collaboration go out the window. The price they pay is the sneer, jeer and side-eye from other onlookers if they have any self-awareness. In all honesty, as a photographer none of these sites particularly interest me because I have seen them a million times before. I have been to Kyoto twice before, and will go again in February, but have never been to these sites purely because I have seen it so many times and have seen how unpleasant Kyoto is with the crowds. For me, I will book unique accomodation somewhere, and make that space my scene for photos. Enjoyed the video, thanks!
This was my first trip to Kyoto so we did end up going to more common spots. Next time I'll try and search out the more unusual places! Thanks for your comment!
@ hope my comment was not inferred as an insult to your decision making or anything haha. Totally get it! Have to do it! I wonder if you made the trip to Nara at all to see the deer? Kyoto is always a bit busy for me but do enjoy going to see the deer nearby!
Didn't take it that way at all. The more time you spend anywhere the more you find. We briefly went to Nara and also lots of other places in Japan! Was a great trip.
@ glad you had a good time!
Thank you for these informations.
Overtourism. It's unpleasant
Can be hard to avoid!
What a great trip! I'm sure you came away with great shots.
I think I did, some of them were a lot more stressful to get than I first imagined! The behind the scenes videos capture the experience a bit better but the final images hide the madness! More to come in the next video!
As someone who has performed this procedure several times, you will get a better result using "median" instead of "mean" when you go to stack the photos. At least I do anyway.
For May 10th I intentionally headed off to the Yorkshire Dales to get as much 'Dark Sky' as possible and it didn't disappoint, roll on exactly 5 months later on October 10th and it was close to being a repeat performance. I've seen the Aurora before in Iceland but nothing compares to seeing it from just a few minutes away out the front door.
Incredible. I've seen it in Banff a few times but never quite like that. So fun hearing about everyone around the world who got to witness it!
Best review. Thanks
do u need a 4x4 to get here?
Not for here, it isn't an F road. However you'll need to be comfortable with gravel roads. We went with a small 2WD

The shoulder season is a great time to get out! Thanks for watching!
Ahh you've discovered an Icon. The stories that that wall has of climbers scaling it. Great video.
Thank you, appreciate you watching!
This was a really informative video. Thank you. I'll check out the filter set for sure. Random question - what are the gloves you are wearing? I find gloves to be one of my most troublesome accessories for photography. I have a drawerful of them that don't work. Maybe a link? That's great. Just found your channel. New subscriber now! Cheers.
Those gloves are the Smartwool active fleece glove. Merino on the inside and polyester on the outside. However is definitely wear a mit over the top when it gets really cold! They have e-tips so you can use touch screens.
@@simoncennals Cheers!
Haven't got magnetic filters yet but after watching this video......mmm
I use 82mm set on my sony/fuji camera stacking and no vignetting.
Very rare to get absolutely no vignetting at 14-16mm whilst stacked. What brand of filters do you use?
@@simoncennals So I can't answer the question about what brand he's using, but what he's saying is that he bought filters that are much larger than his lens and uses step-up rings to mount it to his lens. This effectively eliminates vignetting, even with multiple filters. It also allows you to only buy 1 filter and you can switch from lens to lens using the step-up rings, so you don't have to buy a specific size filter for each and every lens in your bag
@@yubnubyubnubyubnub I thought maybe that might be the case although 82mm is a pretty standard filer size for F2.8 lenses.
Great video and amazing pics! Thanks for the tips. I have to admit, my Lee slide-in filters never see any action because it’s a hassle! I need to pick up a kit like this.
The magnetic systems really are super easy to use. Lots of them out there nowadays too!
@ Can you still use the factory original lens hood when using these filter? I know I can’t with the Lee 100mm setup, but wasn’t sure if any of the magnetic kits allow it. Thanks!
@@seasterl can use lens hoods as normal.
Absolutely! Magnetic is the way to go. I get anxiety just thinking about the threaded ones. I would always drop them, just a mess. The magnetic ones are such a breeze to operate.
Ha ha, yeah I never used my screw ons!
Lake M looks far more impressive in your video - l last visited in 2018 and found myself spoilt in Banff. I need to return obviously.
I used to use Singh-Ray filters, which I liked, and I still have a few graduated ND filters. But, when I bought into the Sony system, I started replacing the Singh-Ray filters with Zeiss T* filters. So now I have Zeiss T* CPL filters in all of the common sizes. And I like them because they don't degrade the image and are color neutral. They also don't interfere with the lens hoods. My ND filters are 82mm by either Breakthrough or Polarpro. I've thought about trying Kase filters and wondered how they compared to Freewell.
I have a Polar Pro variable ND that doesn't really get any use as it's just easier to use the magnetic filters. I may actually sell it. I've seen a lot of people use Kase. These freewell ones colour cast a bit but not terribly.
The 6d has always been under rated.
Awesome image and technique, thank you for sharing. A couple of questions; Do you have to auto align all layers? When shooting with your mirrorless camera do you recommend shutting IBIS off?
I think I did auto align layers, just depends how much you trust your tripod and yourself! Never really hurts to do though. I believe if you turn your IS off on your lens it deactivates your IBIS. However on modern cameras I don't think it matters that much.
I was thinking of Driving through Banff this winter, if it is that cold, when you go for a hike do you leave you car idling?
Don't often go hiking if it's super cold! But no I've been out ski touring in -25°C and never thought to keep the car idling. In fact it's discouraged in general in the park I believe.
@simoncennals I dm you on insta to get the ice cave location, I want to check it out for both photography and Ice climbing! Really enjoying your content
Nice video! I am planning to go iceland in 2025. What date did you visit?
June 1st I think it was. We had all sorts of weather though, snow storms, lots of wind, a little sun.
I like this video. Canmore a find
Simon: I' m a retired surgeon. I just turned from 85 to 86!!! I was extremely depressed on my trip to Glacier where I celebrated 80 years old ( born 1938). But you know what? You are so fortunate in having so many years in front of you! I keep up my traveling with my wife and doing photo workshops, and have toured over 110 countries. Just returned from 3 weeks of camping and yurts in Kyrgyzstan! It was really rough. But somehow, I continue to find the energy to work through sore knees and multiple knee surgeries,, chronic cough from bronchitis, etc. Jut work through the little bumps along the way and you will eventually get to my age. If you don't develop any life threatening illnesses (heart, lung, CA, etc.) and continue to keep as active as your body will allow, that is the secret to longevity. Dale Miami
Incredibly inspiring words Dale! Amazing to see you're still getting after it, I hope to be at least half that adventurous in my later years! Photography is a great motivator to get out and about and to travel to new destinations. Appreciate you watching!
Thanks for a great video Simon, helps a lot!
Appreciate you watching!
I'm a hobbyist using budget equipment but I have a similar experience. My Canon DSLR always gave me dependable shots, and I bought a mirrorless and goodness sakes I realized that batteries are temporary in this world. And I've loved the shots that I get with my mirrorless, once I remember to bring batteries, and if this mirrorless camera was the first camera I ever got, I would not see any problems with it. But I go back to my DSLR pretty regularly and keep both of them with me. I like the optical viewfinder. I really really like it. I like not worrying about batteries. I also love the fact that EF Glass is so plentiful and so cheap. I don't think I would ever shoot just on the DSLR, whereas I have gone on trips with just my mirrorless. The mirrorless is really great and I don't think there are any deal breaking flaws in it. I just think that both are good to have.
I've kept both of mine and I just use EF glass for the same reasons as you mentioned. Just with an adapter on my newer camera! Hopefully we'll get some cheaper 3rd party RF lenses in the future.
Simon, wow great shots. Many years ago I was one of the workers who cut down all the trees over what is now Quarry Lake in order to facilitate the coal strip mine that later created the lake. We also cleared the area just west of there where the Nordic Ski area is now. At the time there was a great protest from the environmentalists whining about how we were denuding and destroying the valley of its natural beauty. Personally, I think it’s all much better now than it was in the early 1970’s - from your photos it seems that you might agree. Great work, Cheers Jeff Straw
It's a beautiful spot and definitely very much loved by locals in the summer. I couldn't comment on what it used to look like though! Appreciate you watching.
What an inspirational human you are Simon! Just keep running ☺️
Nice Video And WoW Shots …Adam Gibbs and Gavin aka Fototripper Were there a few years back and took some Awesome Shots …
Well I turned 40 this year, so imagine how old I feel when I realize someone I look up to as a photographer and a trail runner is 4 years younger than me! 😅 But for what it’s worth, I ran the 5 km in the Jasper Half Marathon in April, and the 10 km in the Canmore Half this September - my first two timed races since I was a kid. Managed the top quarter of my age group in both. And a good portion of the reason I started running was because you kept posting videos of trail runs that made me think “you know, maybe…” 🏃There’s no doubt getting older changes things, but it’s also an opportunity to redefine yourself. And I’d suggest that as you explore your identity heading towards 40, you take good account not just of what you’re pushing your own body to do, but what you’re inspiring others to do. However, there is zero chance I’m going to try to run 60+ km in one day 😂
That's great work! Amazing to hear you may have been a little inspired by my videos too! Good work on the races. I need to enter some more in the future I think!
Great scenery! Have you count the number of 'I' and 'Me' in this video? Our egos lead to dead ends where loneliness and cynicism awaits. If life is just about the 'me', 'my' life, and 'my' choice, quickly one realizes the 'ME' cannot fit 'me'. A fulfilled life is not about ME. Good luck from a fellow Calgarian!
I haven't, but probably natural considering I'm the only one in the film! I suppose one take away is to do the things that make you happy no matter how silly and pointless they may seem. And to spend time with friends, family and loved ones.
Being twice your age, I'm not sure that I should be passing advice along to anyone, but here goes. Do what you love, as much as you can, as long as you can. Life is finite. So make the most of it. As I approach my expiration date, I try to find things that I can still do. I still love to travel. I still love photography. And I still love meeting new people. But, that's me. Find the things that you love. And do them.
Here, here! That's what I was trying to convey in that video. Have to do what you love as much as you can!
@@simoncennalsWhat he said, I’m nearly 60 at still getting out and about still trying to UA-cam and my hips and knees hurt getting out of bed😂😂. Yeah getting old sucks , just keep going, you have an excellent channel. Thanks.
