Down-Home Backyard Gardening
United States
Приєднався 14 кві 2021
Hello everyone, I'm Chad, this is my fourth full season of gardening, and third while being on UA-cam. I live in Spring, TX, Zone 9A, just north of Houston.
When I think of anything “Down-Home” I can’t help but get a smile across my face, feel a sense of a laid-back attitude and think of the time I spent in the garden with my grandmother growing up, which is why I wanted that as the beginning of the name for my channel. I want to produce videos that bring an air of calm to gardening & backyard living videos.
I am a novice gardener at this point, but I have a passion for growing, experimenting and being in my backyard with my plants and dog, Jojo. I hope you will find this channel worth your time and join me on this adventure I have found myself drawn to and constantly thinking about. I fully expect to fail at somethings and to succeed at others, and with your help and advice as viewers, we can all learn together. So, let the journey begin.

You Should Absolutely Grow This Bean || DHBG
To say that I was shocked by how this bean tastes would be an understatement, both raw and cooked. If you've never grown this bean, as I hadn't, I highly recommend you grow it, at least once. You will need a trellis as it vines a lot, but it's well worth it. Hope you enjoy this video, and I hope you give this bean a shot.
Happy gardening, everyone.

This video takes a turn at a point when i realize something in this garden shouldn't be there... and I keep the reaction real, showing everything. Cross pollination is what this video was going to be solely about, then I am stopped by seeing what I find and not understanding how in the world it's growing. As I'm typing this, I'm still very confused and will be doing much more research into this...

I've been wanting to seriously try this squash seed experiment, which you can do with other large seeds. I will show everyone the progression of this experiment as things happen. It's Finally Time, Japanese 2' Carrot & Sweet Potato Harvest || DHBG
It was 38° here this morning 😢 I thought I had a few more days to harvest and over winter my peppers. The cold makes my CRPS worse so I dread this time of year every year
It's actually a gourd. They just call it a bean.
Great show, Chad. I am a real scaredy cat myself, so I will not try to grow those indian snake beans. They look like snakes for sure. Thanks for sharing this information with me. Sincerely, Wanda
WOW, though I don’t like zucchini I will order a packet of seeds and give them a try this upcoming spring
I like it cooked
It’s good brother. I plant it every year ❤
That is one crazy bean! I’ve got to try them! Thanks for a great video!
It's going to be warmer today around 60, so going out to finish the clean up in the garden. So much to do!❤🙏🇨🇦😊
Cool Beans, as the saying goes. 😂
😱 it looks like a snake! I would be freaking out!
@GreenThumbGardener65 it truly does... the description on this Bean even mentions how it looks like an actual snake. 💯
Great description! Makes me want to try it next year.
🤦♀️🤦♀️ now I gotta grow some Indian Snake Beans, Lol. Great video & thanks for such great info!!
Gotta love the fall weather! I love the cooler temps!!!!
Oh and where did you buy the seed? TIA.
@@debraguerrero9950 Baker Creek, rareseeds.com
I love the Harvest to taste. This answers so many questions that I will grow it next season. Thank you.
Woo hoo, I’m first! I would have to try that it looks like the way I fry up my okra in the pan with a little bit of butter
Thankyou
This is awesome. I want to grow some beans, too. Not successful yet.
Well we are done here in SE Minnesota. It got down to 29 last night (Oct 15). Most everything is done. We actually got two extra weeks. Our normal first frost is Oct 1st. I really dislike winter so this is a sad time for me.
@LytonaKirtz Wow, im sorry. I will say that I love your state during the summer. Been up there a few times, and loved it. 💯
Thankyou
Those okra flowers are so beautiful.
It would have been helpful to go through the entire process in one video, so people can decide if they want to plant as well....instead of, I've never done this before, but I'm going to make a video, through out some seeds, and hope this helps 😒
@Ginger_McElfresh_Art sorry, I was still new to YT.
I wish I would of saw this video a month ago I threw out a lot of hard okra and I would of so put the seeds in soups, great idea
Guilty and thumb through several during winter, while planning my spring and summer garden
Great advice as always! I’m getting my worm castings, sifted compost, containers, and fertilizers ready for my plantings a bit later this month. I’m only doing hardneck this year and will insulate the sides of my containers with a thick layer of leaves as well as straw on the surface. Maybe you and I can do a “Biggest Garlic Bulb Comp” next summer? Could be a friendly Marine vs. Airman contest. Either way, good luck on your grow brother!
@@BigWillDogg82 I'm down for that💯🤘
@@DownHomeBackyardGardening alright then! You’ll have a slight leg up being in ground, but I’m gonna give it a go. Best of luck!
@@BigWillDogg82 🤘🤘 What kind of garlic are you growing?
@@DownHomeBackyardGardening I have German White, Ukrainian Red, and Purple Glazer plus a fellow Indiana gardener is sending me a bulb of another he grows yearly and can let you know the type once it lands here. If you aren’t growing any of the same garlic I can always pick up some of what you have planted.
@BigWillDogg82 I have Chet's Itailian, and a Vietnamese garlic, plus Elephant Garlic... the first two were from Bake Creek. Let's just make it easy, your biggest bulb and mine when we harvest. I'll show everything I'm doing, and then during the harvest, I'll record everything.
Super Cool, so fun to havest.
My garlic is going in the ground tomorrow. 😎
Is it ok if the stems die back I think it’s making new ones tho
Thankyou!😊
Ooops! I took the skins off and put them into the small container of water to root first. I am still learning. Thank you for your tips in your video.
Hi. I'm outside of Phoenix. I get beautiful greens but the bulbs don't get very big. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
@@donnaburchett9328 Are they in full sun? If so, maybe partial sun would make a difference. 🤔 And plenty of water to where the ground doesn't fully dry out.
Thankyou
Great tips! Thanks!
Oh boy. 3-4"? In the North! In not sure I went that deep this time. Although they are planted facing south near the house. Had to put a pile of meeting over them to stop the squirrels. They still tried!😮 I do have straw though. Maybe I'll just pile that on cause I'm sure not undoing all that! It's freezing out there! Thanks for the tips.
Do you have any potted plants? I couldn't figure out why my Roma tomato and poblano were suffering. They had grubs! Way deep in pot when I dug up plant. Suggestions to prevent? I'm so frustrated!
Do you mean slugs?
@jenmv3483 Grubs are a pain... in winter, I dig up most beds looking for them. I dont have many, so i don't worry about them very much. For the pots, I would change out all the soil, and move the pots to a different area if you can.
A few years ago I planted a green zucchini and a yellow zucchini and harvested green and yellow striped zucchini.
@@InTheGarden2070 That's awesome🤗🤗
I tried these this year, love them! Mine grew on the ground and they grew in fun shapes. I read that they can also be used as a winter squash, have you tried that?
Do you just put the bulbs in the fridge for a set period of time?
Yes. We're in Virginia so our fall planting season is brassicas, carrots etc.. Our spring season is so wildly unpredictable, we can't trust it. It could be cool and chilly or it could be 80+ . Even before pests, the temperature flux is a pain in the neck. We decided last year in spring we are scaling back to potatoes and sugar snap peas because everything else what doesn't get ate up , bolts. Our big planting season is summer and fall. Fall is amazing
I wish I could, but my yard gets a lot of shade in the fall and the squirrels and Cardinals are cashing seeds all over the yard. They dig up my bulbs, garlic, and seed I scattered for winter sowing. Such a bummer. I technically have 5 weeks until my 1st frost, but have to wrap it up by mid September to early October.
Does it taste just like regular eggplants? What's the difference apart from color and size? I just grew some for the first time this year and they're ready for harvesting now.
@viewfromthemoon To me, the white eggplantd are mild and don't need to be salted to get that unpleasant flavor out of it.
@@DownHomeBackyardGardening Awesome, can't wait to roast them in the oven! Thank you, from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Pickle worms on my fall cucumbers 😑
I have the long tailed skipper caterpillars on my pole beans
I’m only seeing worms on my tomatoes. Can’t find them but I’ve concluded they’re the same worm that gets on my basil. Very green not too big. But eating little holes in lots of my sweetie tomatoes! 🤦🏼♀️ Fortunately I have a ton of sweetie tomatoes growing on the bush 😁
Thankyou
If you like the okra, you should save the seed from that one and grow it again next year eventually you’ll make a new heirloom if you keep picking the same one cross pollination beans you will get two different plants out of all those seeds one from each parent
I ended up with 3 grazon contaminated beds and it was at least 3 years before I could grow anything successfully in them again. More like 5 years. I had no idea what the problem was but the leaves of my tomatoes, cucumbers and sunflowers looked just like the photos shown here.
@VeronicaMist I'm so sorry... that right there is why I won't use manure. Even with this test, the risk doesn't outweighs the reward to me.
So cool how do the new ones taste
@@AvonCTStyle I haven't tried them as I'm drying them out to save seeds... but if more small one grow, I'll try them.
Can you please show what the meat looks like? I do not like cantaloupe and watermelon at all but I love a honeydew.
@kpoppingranny5427 here the link to the Harvest and Taste video I did on this melon. 🤗 ua-cam.com/video/nswdh1Vh3Fc/v-deo.html
