Primarily these videos were made using a handheld camera shooting in video mode. What I need to be shooting isn't typically where I'm looking. The most interesting action in a sailboat race is at the start, so these attempt to start just before the 5 min warning signal, and end after a winner of the start has been determined and the fleet is picking sides for the upwind leg. I find these incredibly educational. By recalling starts of some races, I'm able to remember many other distinct events in those races. The educational benefit of these videos far outweighs the entertainment value, in my opinion.
SBYC Fall r6 ALUETTE crushes start
ALUETTE demonstrates getting up to optimal point and speed before the gun, and timing a boat end start nearly perfectly. Note how they did a modified Vanderbilt, starting above the line (as we verbally note their 'poor' position), then sailing super deep into the 4th row, and beginning their run to the line early. Bravo! They yielded part of their gains with that early tack to cover NATURAL, but crushed the fleet on that start!
One can tell we didn't have the time to get back up to speed and point- too much maneuvering too near the gun. I was planning for 45 seconds to get up to speed after our last tack- didn't do well on that. In fact, we can be very critical of my direction in dialing up at the gun- ever more critical in the obvious light air accelerating heavy boats situation.
Notice that the J33 'GATORAID' seemed to really outpoint us as they rounded the Race Committee boat. They've been doing that. That boat was repaired, rebuilt, and stiffened by the owner and some of that crew- I think even the 'young guy' on that crew has a world title in Sonars or something tough.
We sailed well and finished only behind ALUETTE- which is a feather in the cap of our Skipper to beat two 8's to a finish line. Talk about a beautiful fall day to finish the season!
Covid broke our trends of social interaction- crewing and racing sailboats is competitive companionship with smart active people working towards the common goal. - you've got to be out there with us to be part of these Great Times!

Lots to see! 1. Beautiful close up footage of NATURAL, an 8mR planked in black walnut that we were sure we'd forced into an OCS On Course Start- which by some miracle we came down enough to let them back in! Grrrr!! You can hear I believed Aluette might have been over as well. Shows what I know. 2. GATORAID runs a slick Port-At-The-Pin start and crosses everyone except ALUETTE- well done by a s...
SBYC 2024 Fall 4 start RAVAGE Rolling an 8mR

The only thing to not pick apart is Bill's camera work- super job, Rook. Light air is tough, and I really don't establish our own position with proactive timing, taking what the fleet gives us. We conserve speed with our gybe onto stbd, but should've done it sooner. Speaking of sooner, 8mR NATURAL with huge stones went for a port at the pin start but only failed by being late. Beautiful footage...
RYC Last Wed Race start

TJ takes the camera from ForedeckYoda so we can focus on getting our last start timed correctly. Funny, how many of our races have been us trailing everyone on port with 40 sec, and leading everyone back to a pin end start. We saw more texture out in front of us, and the left paid off when we worked out to be the left-most boat and the wind shifted a few degrees the way we bet on. It was tight ...
RYC Last Wed Race 1st mark

Beautiful clear conditions, and despite a tight race to the upwind mark, we grab a huge lead in the last third of the leg by being the boat furthest left when the wind goes a few degrees in our favor. The cushion permits a little video. UNFINISHED BUSINESS is second, but why they don't get a clean pulling spinnaker is speculation. Crossing in the foreground is EPIC CIRCUS, which was the boat in...
RYC Fall R4 start GAUCHO vs EPIC CIRCUS
Переглядів 2052 місяці тому
Finally, nice clear skies yields pretty video, featuring a battle between EPIC CIRCUS and GAUCHO. GAUCHO gets rolled and spit out to the other side, but they're so good they won this race over us by ONE SECOND. Two weeks in a row- ONE second. What are the chances? -that's scoring error and anticipation. Grrrrr. Last week we overstood two marks, but this week we sailed about as cleanly as can be...
SBYC Labor Day Series R3 start from ACADIA

Nice video of different handicap yacht racers coming off a start line on opposing tacks. MOONGATOR wins the start, alone on the line, visibly coming up to hard on the weather. The small boat crosses the larger red hull - well done! Actually look closely and you'll see that little boat start on port at the pin in a huge cohones move...and although he must duck MOONGATOR, he does cross TACK SEASO...

Beautiful opening of C&C29 TACK SEASON powered up, later featuring bows of boats drag racing after a start. rr We got an early clear path on stbd to the start line so with the freedom to have skipper stay low (because we want room to be pointing high later at the gun), we were in good shape early. The little boat flopping on our bow needed to jam us up in a 'competitive Regatta' way to possibly...
SBYC Labor Day Series R1 start from ACADIA

Multiple weather systems at Beautiful Sodus Bay on the last day in August just before the colors turn. Battlin' Bob on photogenic TACK SEASON gets nice video as a reward for a solid boat end start albeit late- but ahead of us anyway. We come in with more waterline speed and take the hit of punching through to clean air underneath. It doesn't take much wind to make ACADIA a lot of fun to race! A...

The countdown sequence to start a race can be abandoned for any one of many reasons. People are creatures of habit, and tend to execute familiar patterns.
Given most of a long line RYC Fall R3
Переглядів 2362 місяці тому
Nice video of us flopping onto stbd late and leading the fleet towards the pin end of the line. Most of the fleet set up for long starboard runs to the line, and it helped us out. We lost this race by ONE second. I guess we really did not win this start, as the winning boat is hanging on our hip at the end of the video.
Over Early Bummer Yacht Racing RYC Fall R2

We lost winning this race by 1 second...so we really did not win this start despite the way the race seemed to go. Overcast skies bring air, and then waves. The upwind was an effort driving, but the downwind was fast and fun...except for the crazies that signed up to gybe the pole in heavy air. I was also wrong about the class in front of us- the little J24 destroyed their competitors and won t...
DAZZLE backlit RYC Fall 1 finish
Переглядів 892 місяці тому
Normal people simply don't get how 'mental-health enjoyable' it is having a competitive opportunity with friends out on the water- with THIS kinda sunset, all the time, ho hum, we're used to it. DAZZLE lives up to her name after being behind, taking the biggest flyer out into the Lake, and coming back with mo' just behind us- looking sharp with the sun behind her. You'll notice a smaller red sp...
RYC Fall R1 Great Start under clear sky UNFINISHED BUSINESS wins
Переглядів 2162 місяці тому
Nice feel for the sunny yet brisk conditions on a warm summer evening. We time our 'prowl' well, get into the last pin-end spot by jamming up GAUCHO, and come out of it okay, with pretty optimal speed and point achieved right at the gun. Watch UNFINISHED BUSINESS, a larger J109, gobble up GAUCHO, a performance J88, overrunning them at the start line, and using the hook to take them up and spit ...
RC mistake extra horn blows to AP
Переглядів 882 місяці тому
I think they had a new helper on the Race Committee boat that accidentally blew the horn that second time, actually just after we pass them and I pan forward. I looked back in confusion- and the PRO (Principal Race Officer) made the call to immediately start over to eliminate any confusion.

I know these boats beat all them this year eyc. on promises promises
At least you started in clean air
The quality of that video is a disaster.
I'll accept suggestions for a suitable camera. I use a Sony XP because of the lens, if you have a 4K suggestion, I'm listening.
fOR SOMEONE BROWSING IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU COULD IDENTIFY WHERE IN THE WORLD YOU ARE? oops sorry about capitals
I was holding my breath when Gaucho tacked in front if Poledancer. So close!!
What a deceitfull title!!
We started DFL and that's disaster. I'll accept suggestions for changes to the title.
Is that “Natural” USA 36??
Yes. John Fowler passed a few years ago, and a syndicate has done great work on her.
excellent keep the videos coming dude!
Nice start
Looks like that start was about as caotic onboard as it looked from the PHRF fleet starting behind. I was wondering what the heck was going on with that. Good race. LOVED seeing the meteors.
Nice start!
2024 9:36 OF NOTHING 2 C
Nice narration, looked like a fun start despite only have two other competitors.
That was a bad spot for the barging J/99, I thought they did a good job once you closed the door.
Looks like Sodus Bay.
Roger that, Ghostrider.
recall the 8 meter yachts from the 1986 LYRA which was the only one held on Lake Erie , put on by the Buffalo Canoe Club there were 3 one natural wood another navy blue can't remember the third one. Beautiful boats.
P r o m o S M
What kind of boats are those? I mean what kind of sailing design? The one with the brown hull doesn't seem to have any cutting edge. Is the hull's cross-section circular all the way to the bow?
8mr class, look it up on Google
Love the Green ! But what happened to the Carbon Spin Pole ?
Nice shot of the rainbow !
Looks like RYC Wednesday evenings. What was the date ??
Nice to see Natural doing well !
Too bad the header never came! What boat is this on?
In fact, this very R boat, Shadow, sank once in a midweek race at NYC in Toronto. Big blow, combing goes under, gone! They were able to raise her not long after. And they used to race these boats in overnight races on Lake Ontario. Iron men.
Ooof. No thanks. Quiet boats are fast boats.
The board is called cockpit combing and on these boat they would sink without them as the boats are very wet with a lot of water coming on deck and the rail is buried and water is running along the combing. I helmed and raced an R Boat in a fleet of six on Lake Erie. They go upwind like an arrow, although she was narrow, she had full keel with deep draft, heavy 16,000 lbs. and was easy to handle down wind and they don't have motors. Build with the class rule as the J boats. Ours had 17 inches freeboard, once got caught in a squall line that developed into a gale and, had to beat up to the river entry. One gallon a stroke pump, and eclectic bilge pump and two buckets keep us afloat. We came in river with with water almost to our knees, and with all the sails down an the boat was doing 5 1/2 knots under bare poles. You should ask for a ride, it's unique, and if it's blowing, you never be scared of any park ride again after you dock.
That was disrespectful on so many levels. Bet you have a hard time finding someone to sail with.
What you must understand is that the skipper is a renowned screamer- especially at his petite wife aboard. I made the specific effort to communicate with him in ways most familiar and recognizable (yelling), AND briefed him extensively on the maneuvers expected (that he blew). I am blessed to sail with exceptional crews, NOT ONE of which has ever heard such communication from me. J24 NA's was coming up, and I truly wanted to help a local guy improve and duke it out with the big boys (and MINX).
Nice job keeping the cam steady tho. 👌
You have gotta get something to block out that wind! Rewatch this video. I can't hear you talk nearly half the time!
That is a $h!t show. I can see your frustration, but.... there are better ways of talking to the driver. And instead of "pop up" say kill time and stuff it up. or something to get the point across. So many things are just, all levels of wrong on this video. Its hard to put it all to word.
Cool channel!
There probably aren't more than 20 crewmembers by the name of Christiansen.
What camera did you capture this footage on?
+Antonio Franco A fujifilm XP that I hold in my hand. It has twice the resolution of the camera I began using 5 years ago. I really like it- it has some great features.
Thanks for Sharing Yoda. Nice video.
You were leeward boat, should have luffed him up behind committee boat
sailorlewi if you do that you win the battle and lose the war :-)
