Jen Kelly, Professional Poker Player and Winner of 3 Bikepacking races this Summer
In her first year as a bikepack racer Jen Kelly has already racked up an impressive resume. She entered into 3 bikepacking races this summer and won them all! She's also a professional poker player who picked up cycling 4 years ago when she moved into a condo next to a rails to trails. She quickly fell in love with it and just wanted to ride further and further. Last year she put her career, as a professional poker player, on hold to focus on riding her bike.
Her first bikepacking race was the inaugural Great American Wheelman Race, a 3,600 mixed surface race across America which she placed 4th overall and 1st Female. Just 6 weeks later she entered the 900 mile Big Sky Spactacularie in Montana where she took 1st overall. Then only 5 days after finishing Big Sky she entered the 1,750 mile Montana Bike Odyssey and took the overall win again! Needless to say her gamble to focus on bikepacking is paying off!
We had a great chat and it was great to talk to someone who is new to the sport and already having so much success.

Justinas Leveika is fresh off an impressive Colorado Trail Race finish. This was his first time at CTR and he finished in 4d 7h 17m, which was over 8 hours faster than the next rider. However, due to a rule violation, which was unknown to him at the time, he was not the official first place finisher. That honor goes to Xavier Chiriboga with a time of 4d 15h 55m. Going into Leadville Justinas de...
Racing the Tour Divide Legally Blind, Chris Smith
Переглядів 2652 місяці тому
In 2000 Chris Smith was diagnosed with Stargardt's Disease, by 2009 he was declared legally blind. No longer able to drive he turned to the bike as a way to get to work 3 miles from his house. At the time he tipped the scales at over 300 lbs and the 3 mile ride to work was a real challenge, but Chris wasn't discouraged. He kept at it, joined friends for group rides, and eventually went on to ea...

An accomplishment that may be shocking to outsiders, but for Edyn, this just feels like the next step in his progression as a cyclist. Edyn first joined me on the podcast in September of 2022 after he fin...

    Listening to this, reinforces why I (and many others) will never come to the USA and participate in any event, or ride my bike for recreation purposes. I recently rode a 2000km ultra through the UK (England, Wales and Scotland) and experienced nothing but courtesy from motorised vehicle drivers and this was a pleasant surprise as the UK is not supposed to be bike friendly!

      I don't blame you. We have a car problem here, it's not okay, but it sure is disappointing as USA is rich in natural beauty. Personally, I'm eager to experience a ride in the UK were I don't have to worry about angry motorist.

      @@bikesordeath it is a real shame as, from what I have seen I would love to experience your wilderness and countryside. I live in Southern Spain, a country that has a strong cycling culture and great respect for cyclists. The law is also very strongly on the cyclists' side (bicycles are considered cars in law and therefore they have exactly the same rights in law. You are basically a slow moving car). I was very surprised when I recently rode through the UK, the event was 75% off road (and chunky) but that means that 25% or 300 miles of it was on the road, and I experienced nothing but helpfulness and courtesy! I really enjoy your podcast and you touch on some very interesting subjects, you are also very open and that's becoming a rarity. The event(s) that you organise sound like a blast too! If you ever feel like coming over to Spain, either solo or with your family let me know and we'll do what we can for you! Good luck and all the best, Tim

    My understanding is the GDMBR, designed by The American Cycling Association, is a MTB route from Banff Canada to Antelope Wells NM. It can be ridden by anyone. The Tour Divide is a race that follows the exact route of the GDMBR. No deviation from the route is allowed. You can ride the GDMBR and make any route changes you desire. Some do to avoid the nasty mud sections. If you’re not racing you can call it whatever you like. A popular UA-cam cyclist, Ryan Van Duzer, is competing in the 2024 Tour Divide. He stated he is starting in Banff. I’m not sure what the guy being interviewed is talking about with the TD starting in Jasper MT.

    • @bikesordeath
      @bikesordeath 4 місяці тому

      He didn't say that the TD starts in Jasper. The official GDMBR by the ACA starts in Jasper, Canada. You can verify this on their website. There is a lot of confusion out there between the GDMBR and the Tour Divide which is a race that mostly follows the GDMBR. Often people will conflate the two and when Jay was attempting his ITT, he was riding the official GDMBR. Part of his ride was an attempt to bring more attention to the original route. Tour Divide starts in Banff, Canada. GDMBR starts in Jasper, Canada.

      @@bikesordeath I just looked at the ACA map and, you are correct, it does start in Jasper, Canada. I was not aware of that. Every video I’ve seen about this route people keep saying Banff but nobody mentions Jasper. Not sure why the tour divide doesn’t start in Jasper. Too confusing.

    • @JohnBruno13
      @JohnBruno13 3 місяці тому

      @@salmonella508 I believe its because when the TD started, the GDMBR started in Banff. But the GDMBR has since been extended to Jasper.

I'd love to see more bike packing films with him, Lachy, Lael. Who cares about the "rule" of filming. How do they the organizers or trails expect to showcase the depth of the course, the weather, struggle, triumph and the possibilities of others to push themselves outside of their box.

    Jay Petervary is always fun to listen to given all of his experience riding bikes & doing ultras. But damn, seeing him in a freaking body cast is tough to see. It’s not so much the neck contraption that’s hard to take … it’s that the guy is wearing a body cast during this interview. Damn! Thankfully, he’s outta that tortuous body cast now and is recovering from getting ran over - literally, dude got ran over from behind by an inattentive / distracted driver. As a PT for 28 years, I applaud you for this excellent episode that was incredibly relevant! Great job, guys. I hope that a lot of people listen to this episode. We should all be lifelong students of health and fitness! For those who are born with hip problems such as “knock knees” that prevent them from sitting cross legged, it is often best not to try and “fix” that with stretching into external rotation because you can cause more problems than you help. Hip ante-version is bone structure issue from birth, not a muscle tightness issue in the hips. This is an example where seeing a PT at least once in the clinic can be very valuable as the PT can prevent you from doing exercises that work for most people but can be counterproductive for some.
