This song, by the Original Knaves, was started in 1990, and finished in 2020. With Bill Urich supplying the words and melody as only he can do with his historical kaleidoscope. The rest of the group strapped it together, creating the final structure of the song. After recording the drums, bass, lead vocal, acoustic, and demo lead guitar...the song got mothballed. JP resurrected it in 2017 after...

    Can the circuit boards for the key (notes) groups - tone generating boards - be replaced with new ones? Can they be replicated?

    Nice work. So you have a schematic for your mods? I’ve got a 1965 that could stand some of these changes.

    I have the same Jaguar. The Vibrato, while the switch seems to be clicking fine when I turn it on and off, but no change in vibrato. I'm wondering if you know what might cause that, or what needs to be replaced? Also, the volume of the main keyboard seems low, compared to the Bass notes. Any suggestions? Great video, BTW!!

      Do you think the 4.7UF caps need to be polarized? The ones you used to replace the originals don't appear to be, yet the originals looked like they were... Radial Electrolytic Capacitor, 4.7uF, 50V, 105 C

    The D# is off an early model v304 (non e or e2) the ones without a contour switch.

      Thanks. That's good to know! (This is in reference to the odd D# tone board from the Vox Jaguar that is pristine in the video). I've since sold both units, and the legs that go with the units. Age has set in!....so they had to go!

      Yes, I used a 59' Hardtail Strat into a 64' Vibrolux Reverb, miked with a Unidyn III SM57 into an Ampex MX10. the output back into another line input on a second MX10. All recorded on an Otari 1" MX7800 8 track. Running at 15 ips. These were lean times. We didn't have much in the way of equipment. But the Otari made everything sound huge. MX10's also used for some of the drums.

    I have the same original Vox! Mine even has the original cord and foot volume control plus little musical gold treble cliff symbol! Thanks so much for the information it's going to give me a head start in the repair since it hasn't been turned on for years!

    I have a 65 version of the comet ,,,and mine looks like a bird nest inside compared to this one . i have the caps replaced and 3prong death cap removal done ...but im tempeted to just rewire it back from scratch any thoughts ?

    • @trafelij
      @trafelij 2 роки тому

      Andy, I feel your pain. The birds nest is a disaster of design. However, to do more than that would be too much for me. As I age, time has become very important to me! But I recently finished rebuilding a EA-50T mid 60's pacemaker. Once I put a Celestion G10 alnico speaker in it it became a different amp! This is a wonderful upgrade for these crappy, but fun, amps. Mid 60's epi's are fun, because I have no problem nor guilt rebuilding them....can't do that to a Fender! You may notice that I use some plastic zip ties to tidy things up a bit...but it's still spaghetti !

    I built a Jaguar in spring/ summer , 1968 or 69 from a HEATHKIT. Price $299.00, $50 Freight ( from chicago to Portland, Oregon) I sold it about 1971. I wonder where it went? Anyone?

    • @kilcar

      I spent abt 6 weeks making the Jaguar. My dad was certainly supportive, he made his own Crystal radio in about 1922.

    Wow. I am also surprised by the D1000e. I bought one in the '70s and never found its sweet spot as a vocal mic. Never thought to mic a cabinet with it. For that purpose, it seems to be the best of the three you used - more colorful than the 57, crisper than the 609 - more musical in general. I'm glad I still have it. Thank you for going to the trouble to set this up and post it.

    • @trafelij
      @trafelij 3 роки тому

      Yes, I was surprised too! Too bad I didn't realize 30 years ago when I used to record a lot. I think the "sintered" metal grill threw me off. But agree better response than the 609 without the sharp edge of the 57 (that works well for overdrive lead).

  • @6832jack

    D1000e for rhythm, 57 for leads, I"d like to hear the D1000e in M position vs 57 since that looks like that would put them closer tonally according to the frequency graphs

    • @trafelij
      @trafelij 4 роки тому

      I agree with you on 57 for lead, and D1000e for 12 string/rhythm. Maybe I will do the M vs B mode on the D1000E in the near future.

    Im thinking of purchasing a Vox Jaguar. However, I am concerned about it frequently breaking. In your experience do you know if they do break frequently and if so are the parts hard to find? (The one i'm thinking about purchasing is missing the cord, but the owner temporarily jerry rigged it.) How did you get a cord?

    • @trafelij
      @trafelij 4 роки тому

      I think the cords are extremely difficult to source. You may have better luck in a thrift store looking for old appliances which to my memory may have the same....such as an Electrolux vacuum. New plugs are grounded, unlike this one. but it's easy to bypass the chord and just hook up a different or. place a 3 wire receiver in it...with a small, non reversible cut. In our history of using them...they did not break. Only when we jumped on them....and we did. the corners typically need re-gluing. There are the germanium transistors which are very difficult, but not impossible, to source if needed. Here is a list of parts I compiled. Caps 1000uf 15 V Axial (original Ducati brand) Under switch DUAL 1000uf 25 V Axial (Ducati) - Power supply box SFT 351 Germanium transistor. 78 Total on 12 Tone boards and 1 generator board AF116 Bass Divider Transistor. 1 ( Can replace per the web with AC125 Germ Transistor. )

    • @trafelij
      @trafelij 3 роки тому

      In reality they don't break frequently. sometimes you have to jiggle the individual tone cards. I recommend changing all the electrolytic capacitors as I have done. But I posted a blurb once on fixing a modern Korg Keyboard....what a disaster. I love the old stuff, because it is fixable. That being said, I also have the Nord version which sounds awesome, and has touch sensitivity and adequate volume. The Vox has no dynamics at its output. There is no sensitivity in the keys...it's on or off. These Vox's have low output....both of mine, and it's well known. Thus, they work great through a clean preamp such as an EP-1 or one of the other uncolored preamps pedals....thus having volume.
