The very first iron swords and tools were inferior to the bronze ones but it didn't stay that way very long.

This was actually a little better than a few other films I have scene when Iron goes against bronze, where the bronze snaps like butter, it took two blows. I know it was shown to break from two blows for dramatic effect, but it would take a good deal more to do such damage to bronze. Though it would indeed inevitably break or warp a good deal.

I really enjoyed the book 50 years ago (battered used copy from the VA hospital). It was extremely well-written. I never knew they tried to make a movie.

This scene repeats a common misconception regarding the early iron age although a Hollywood film from 1954 can be forgiven for bad history. Iron was basically a poor man's bronze after the evaporation of easy to harvest tin deposits led to the Late Bronze Age Collapse as bronze was far superior to early iron weapons as a tool of war both in terms of toughness and ease of manufacture. So yes iron would have been superior to pure copper weapons but bronze was not surpassed in hardness until novel metallurgists discovered combining iron with carbon produces steel within a couple hundred years of mass iron-working by various ancient civilizations...

Stone to Bronze to Iron to Steel. When the Europeans were forging their medieval cleavers, the Japanese were forging the Katanas. The finest sword ever.

People need to check out Victor Mature's repertoire of movies. Samson and Delilah, The Robe, My Darling Clementine, he made these during the 'Golden' years at Hollywood and unfortunately is overlooked by alot of the other big names during that era like The Duke and Charlton Heston. A very capable actor, I've always enjoyed his presence with his work.

I can't tell you what an impression this film's epic finale made, even seeing it on TV in the early 1960's! Finally saw it on the big screen at the Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD, about ten years ago -- skipped church to see the Sunday matinee!

I'm going to have to see this movie. Looks entertaining, made back when Hollywood's main goal was still to entertain rather than preach. To the people saying their costumes look Roman; no they don't at all look Roman. Romans were not the only ones to use armor. Historically, the first bits of armor to go on, in any culture, is the helmet and breastplate. They are also the last bits of armor to go off as weapons technology improves and makes it obsolete. This is bronze age Egypt, if you notice, only the officer is wearing armor. The rest of the soldiers just have uniforms, which don't look at all Roman. People shouldn't just say things, look and see what's going on. For everyone saying the guys are looking too white, I do agree, it's somewhat immersion breaking, but there weren't a lot of Middle Eastern people living in the US back then, so they had to use white actors. I know there are some people who believe in the black Egypt nonsense, just do some research and you will see that Egypt has always been peopled by Middle Eastern looking people. The Copic community is what is left of the ancient Egyptian population which never mixed with the Arabs. Read books, look at pictures of the mummies and statues, and look at the Coptic population. They are not white, but they are caucasoid.

Howard Hawks disliked this movie after making it, and spending nearly a year in Egypt filming many outdoor scenes, while most of the indoor scenes were shot at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank in 1954. Released in 1955, the film was very successful at the box office, with Jack Hawkins starring as the magnificent Pharaoh Khufu, second king of the 4th Dynasty, circa 2900 B.C. and credited builder of the Great Pyramid. Joan Collins, at age 21, was ravishingly beautiful and her character, Princess Nellifer of Cyprus, was deliciously wicked. A true classic, in WarnerColor, CinemaScope, and 4-channel Stereo Sound, with a fantastic music score by Dimitri Tiomkin.

Complete BS that academics keep pushing about bronz age. Then they find 4 different iron weapons and tools in different countries that are accidentally used alloys so they survived corrosion and produced in bronze age. Iron tools and weapons were harder to produce so bronze was used more.

If they made a modern remake it'll feature bad CGI crowds and fake looking buildings. As old as this movie is no modern film can beat genuine living extras and real sets. The effort and training just to carry Pharaohs carriage without tipping him on his head must have been enormous.

Actually, iron was inferior to bronze, but the ore was much more common. Like VHS beating Betamax: the worse one won. "Bronze is stronger than iron because it is an alloy of two other metals, making it denser and difficult to break."
