Beware Seasonal Cyber Scams - The CyberDudes Pod Episode 015
Welcome back to CyberDudes! This week, we’re talking about the rise in scams during the holiday season and how we can all avoid falling victim. From fake e-commerce deals to phishing emails, social media traps, and dubious charity appeals, we break down the tactics scammers use to exploit the festive rush. Together, we’re sharing practical tips to protect our money and our peace of mind.
We also highlight a standout story: O2’s clever use of AI to create “Grandma Daisy,” an AI bot designed to waste phone scammers’ time with endless rambling conversations. It’s a brilliant example of how we can use tech to disrupt cybercrime in creative ways.
With Cyber Week, Black Friday, and holiday shopping in full swing, we discuss fake gift card schemes, payment fraud, and the risks of social media promotions. We’re diving into the value of using credit cards for online shopping and exploring why debit cards might not be the safest choice.
Join us as we gear up for the most scam-prone time of the year and work together to stay safe on CyberDudes!

    Fidelity is not being transparent.

    • @TheCyberDudesPod
      @TheCyberDudesPod 20 днів тому

      Probably not. But at the same time, the specifics about what you can and can’t say about a cyber incident sometimes mean you can’t be 100% transparent right off the bat. It goes both ways. That said, customers generally deserve better than they get from big business 👍🏼

    For the BEC aspect, it is very easy to compromise an email with a phishing link. You domt even need to steal credentials, just the session. However there are MAJOR indicators that can be alerted on when this happens. I single detection for a suspicious email rule being created most likely would have got the BEC

    • @TheCyberDudesPod
      @TheCyberDudesPod 2 місяці тому

      I'd hazard this was more likely an impersonation of a trusted supplier than a case of stolen credentials via phishing link because agreed, a lot of email filters will catch the malicious url. We might have to differ on the "easy to compromise an email with a phishing link" topic as "ease" is a relative concept. Yes, that kind of activity is easy if you have the skills - not as much so if you're a pure-play scammer relying on social engineering tactics

    • @TheCyberDudesPod
      @TheCyberDudesPod 3 місяці тому

      Had the camera set up closer last week. Since I use my phone to record, it turns out that at that distance me being centred on my phone makes me slightly off center in shot - which i knew would be the case. I just didn’t realise it would be so pronounced on the 16:9 split screen view 😅 It’s a lesson learned

    Hey guys I just subed for number 15! I have been “planning” on getting a show going myself for well over 5 years now😂 and seeing that you guys just started and are doing it inspires me again! Good luck on the journey boys! P.S. I’m also 45 , and looking to take the leap into a different direction tends to lend itself to feelings of “Imposter syndrome” so again, thank you for simply doing it

      Thanks for the sub and the well wishes! Honestly you’re right on the money - the best thing you can do is just put a show outline together and get recording. That’s basically what we decided to do no matter how little we knew what we were doing. We accepted that we might think the first few are crap but we posted them anyway. The aim is to make each subsequent one better than the last and always keep learning Let us know if you’ve got any questions. We’ll always be willing to help out if we can

    How about we just get rid of QR codes. How about we just help each other face-to-face. I've not needed to use a QR code ever I don't even know how to use that feature. What do we need this for

    • @TheCyberDudesPod
      @TheCyberDudesPod 8 місяців тому

      QR codes are a quick, easy and necessary step in setting up many multi-factor authentication solutions. QR codes will also begin to replace passwords as a primary means of verifying your identity. Before lambasting a technology it's generally a good idea to have made at least some effort to understand what it's for and how it works

    You can’t put CISSP on your resume or LinkedIn if you pass the test without 5+ years of security experience. If you do, EC council bans you for life. The experience requirement is no joke. Saying CISSP is “not for beginners” is a small understatement.

    • @TheCyberDudesPod
      @TheCyberDudesPod 8 місяців тому

      Quite right - 5 years of experience (or 4 with special dispensation) is indeed a hard requirement without which you can’t claim to be CISSP certified. Is it possible you meant to reference ISC2 rather than EC Council, as it’s the former who issue the qualification? And yes, this particular Short in isolation is indeed an understatement, but it’s been clipped from a larger segment which delves into more detail

    Personally I try to think about QR code safety similarly to credit card safety. I'm not going to swipe my card just anywhere or for any reason (my spending habits aside) and when I do I'm going to be looking for things that seem off eg. skimmers/new qr code pasted over.

    • @TheCyberDudesPod
      @TheCyberDudesPod 8 місяців тому

      Yeah, this is a really good mindset. It should always be a question of "What's in it for me? Do I understand what potential benefit confers to me?" If that's not clear then one should always be questioning the need to scan a QR
