Friends of Carlington & Hampton
Приєднався 26 чер 2021
The Friends of Carlington Woods and the Friends of Hampton Park are two stewardship groups in Ottawa, Ontario. We raise awareness of the challenges facing urban forests, inspire the local community to get involved in projects and events, and work with municipal and federal partners on projects to preserve the Carlington Woods and the Hampton Park Woods (both environmentally protected). Videos showcase the flora and fauna of the Carlington and Hampton Park Woods and surrounding areas, as well as some of the challenges facing these forests.

Chipping Day
The invasive buckthorn that Friends of Carlington Woods has been removing for the past two months is now being chipped up and blown back along the fence line to help control regrowth. Thanks to the NCC for arranging for the wood chipper! @NationalCapitalCommission #invasivespecies #buckthorn #ottawa

Buckthorn removal area 2 (BR2) in Ottawa's Carlington Woods. The majority of mature female buckthorn has been cut and their berries removed and disposed of. The remaining branches cannot regrow, so they will be chipped by the National Capital Commission and used to help suppress buckthorn regrowth. #ottawa #invasivespecies #buckthorn @NationalCapitalCommission

The Carlington Woods is a relatively young forest, with most trees average about 60 years old. Many oak trees naturally regenerate here.
Hampton Park in Fall: Here comes the sun

Hampton Park is gorgeous year round, but in fall, it's spectacular! The early morning sun comes up between two sugar maples, turning everything gold.

Below the orange fence line is the Alan Sunter Memorial, a tribute to a long-time friend of the park. The fence helps to protect the eroded slope and the new plants and trees below from activities like sledding, biking, hiking, and dogs.
Hampton Park in Fall

Part of the work that the Friends of Hampton Park and the Friends of Carlington Woods do is monitor the urban forest, how it's doing, what threats are there or imminent, and to check up on our various planting and invasive removal projects. It's as easy as taking a walk. Taking photos and videos of the woods regularly helps us plan for the future, and shows both the negative and positive impacts.

Deberrying buckthorn the Keystone cops way
Переглядів 1121 день тому
Would that all buckthorn de-berrying were this fast! We take the berries off so that they can't seed and reinfect the Woods, and to reduce the amount of vegetation we have to dispose of. @NationalCapitalCommission
American Beech: Spotlight on Species

With its smooth grey bark, the American Beech is a distinct species in Hampton Park. This tree had been damaged years ago by a storm and another storm in 2024 finally brought it down. #ottawa #nativespecies @NationalCapitalCommission @ecologyottawa3827
Buckthorn remove & replace, Part IV (last one!)
Переглядів 20Місяць тому
With the buckthorn down and the new vegetation in, it's now a waiting game to see how the shrubs and the red oak do in this location. Despite its hard exterior, the soil here is predominantly clay, which holds onto moisture. We also planted the red oak in a natural dip in the land, not only to save us having to dig more, but to capture more rainwater. Our thanks to the Elmdale School Council fo...
Buckthorn remove & replace, Part II
Переглядів 17Місяць тому
All of the female buckthorn that we cut have berries on them so we take them all off (yep, it's a pain!) to make sure they don't spread. We can then use the de-berried branches to smother regrowth along the edge of where we'll be planting.
Buckthorn remove & replace, Part I
Переглядів 23Місяць тому
We started this project by first removing all of the invasive buckthorn within a triangular area, bounded on one side by a mid-sized black walnut tree, a native wildflower patch (planted to stop dog strangling vine) on another, and more buckthorn along a third. We will take out the remaining buckthorn in the years to come.

Wonderful forest drive views, autumn colors, footage. Thank you for sharing. Video 👍
Hello, can I have the name of the tree? Thank you.
The white flowers that the bees are on are White Upland Asters (Aster ptarmicoides)
I'm in California near Lake Tahoe. Just heard a crow make a sound like a frog. I thought it was a frog until I got closer! And then I saw it was a crow making that noise!
It sounded a little like the sound in your video
@@wademartin8822 Cool! When the ravens moved into this area a few years ago, the local crows weren't too happy and some of them even started imitating them!
Haha! Very good! Thank you for popping out for a while to do that!
We just heard this sound in Gatineau, then saw the biggest raven we've ever imagined fly over. Thanks for the vid to confirm it was the raven!
Glad to hear it! There are so many of them in this neck of the woods now! Some of our local crows have begun to imitate their calls. Look for the wedge-shaped tail when they're in flight; they also tend to glide more than crows (who flap a lot).
Nice
Wow! That’s awesome!
Is that hello giant hyssop? The bees sure love it there!
Yep! That's the seed we got from OWS, too. I've transplanted about half a dozen of the larger ones out already. It appears to be very useful against creeping bellflower.
The funni bird sound
i have two in my back garden tree croaking at each other just now 😂 sounds like two frogs
I love the noise they make that sounds like water gurgling in a stream. I've also noticed that the local crows have started to imitate the ravens...smart birds!
Yay for volunteer plants - and people!
Wonderful! 👍💚🐝
Gosh, how did the purple coneflower get there, and the blue vervain? Those don’t usually show up on their own. Perhaps it is close enough to where you have been planting to have been naturally seeded there.
That's the thing -- for some reason, we've never planted coneflower! And even if we had, it'd be in the meadow, halfway across the park. The city or province did some seeding back there after they widened the Queensway, so even though they also brought in non-natives in the soil, perhaps they used a native seed mix. There are only a few specimens, so there's also the possibly that someone did some seeding in there. But another good spot to get next year's crop of seeds!
❤❤❤
Is that in Hampton or Carlington?
Hampton.
One of the "goat paths" made that goes to the Ridge.
I caught some in my house and put them under a clear plastic cup. I just looked at them and they’re all upside down, dead. BUT one of them has no insides left!! Just a head, wings and legs. My guess, it got so thirsty, it ate the other to stay alive 😅
Bugs are so cool. Some are more evil than others 🙂
That area was also a former on ramp heading east that curved around from Carling up onto the Queensway. The MTO. Decided to close it because they felt that the other on ramp at Carling and Kirkwood was too close to it. So the amount of trees that they planted there appears to be an attempt to make it into a treed area.
Yeah, that ramp was a bit of a death trap for pedestrians. But they didn't plant tree out of the goodness of their heart; it was a requirement of the contract and it was done badly in many spots. In nearby Hampton, you could pull the trees right out of the soil a year after they were "planted." No one has been back to check these trees or unstake them since 2019 despite emails to the Ministry of Transport and the MPP. Two trees planted by Kingsway United (also provincial) won't make it -- fabric they used to stake the trees has grown into the bark.
Thanks, Sharon. I had not looked in quite a while. Maybe we could put a sign that indicates it’s for compostables but we still need the No Trash sign because people don’t know what is compostable and what isn’t! I’ll make a sign to cover all these issues.
I was surprised to find so much in it -- I often check it and it's been fine up until now. I didn't check the one at the Staircase, but I've never found anything in that one. I'm thinking that a more permanent solution is to move it further back, closer to the fence. People use it because it's right there (plus the lid was off it when I arrived), so maybe it's a question of making it more difficult to get to.
Possibly it would help reduce access but also it will get less sun to help it decompose. However, I've not been actively cultivating it as a composter, I admit.@@friendsofcarlingtonhampton
What an excellent video and speaker, thanks for putting this up on UA-cam. I'm going to have to watch this again to capture everything.
Why did they push the snow so far?!
Laziness? Ignorance of the consequences? Your guess is as good as mine. There is so much open greenspace, grass that could take the salt, but instead they just pile wherever they feel like it. Reported to City & NCC.
Gosh! Where is this?
😡😡😡
That toilet has been there for years...the City doesn't patrol for illegal dumping unless pushed. It did work for us on the other side of the park, but there are more eyes on that section.
It's one of the paths into the lower West Woods that are off the street that runs parallel to Woodward about a 5-minute walk west of the City yard. Because no one polices illegal dumping, all sorts of people use this place. We did manage to stop dumping at the Raven entrance with the City's help, so perhaps we need another concerted City effort.
Ha ! He thinks he's people
Neat!
Very nice butterflies, flowers, nature. video, thank you for sharing. Like 👍
Many thanks! We're not great with video yet but with a better camera now it should get better!
@@friendsofcarlingtonhampton I think your video is very good! 🙂
This does not look easy. Thing is heavy and requires a lot of physical energy. She'll give up before the job is complete. No respect for the pullers as they get nothing done relatively speaking and completely ruin the soil structure. cut treat and you'll eliminate buckthorn, use the puller and it ain't happening
No one said it'd be easy but it has to be done and we did it. The job was done by several adults and about half a dozen 11 and 12 year olds. We planted shrubs and trees, and overseeded with native wildflowers and grasses, and did another round of buckthorn weeding this spring. It's working. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
Honestly would probably be a breeze to use for a man over 200 pounds. Just put your weight into it and it’ll put anything up
Hey, I’m a star! Lol
I was going through all the videos and saw that this was never got uploaded publicly...better late than never, eh?
Yes! 43 shrubs made up of I think 6 species, almost all doing very well.
Lovely! NIce to have it labeled but those ones don’t last very long.
These are the same ones I used for the past several weeks to ID trout lily colonies (I just changed the labels), so they're still hanging in there.
Sad and frustrating. More education needed.
That's a nice bee.
Nice 😊
I could see how that could be very satisfying.
