Amazons stock price YTD has been impressive and for a variety of reasons. But how much of this price is due to cutting the size of the work force? For example I do a job by myself (for Amazon) that last year 4 people were doing. This factor spread about the entire network of employees probably has more to do with the current share price than anything else. Its the iron hand in the velvet glove is it not?

Inflation in costs of essential goods and services has definitely reduced discretionary spends in the UK; although headline unemployment is not too bad there are high rates of workers who are signed off "long term sick" on benefits, and they won't have much money to spend either. Physical Retailers also have long term headwinds of very high business property takes ("business rates" is the local term), which in some cases can be the same as rent, and rents can be very high also. Which impact profitability. NB food costs in the UK are still not as bad as the US; fastfood e.g. McDonalds also a bit cheaper here.
