It's a very unique combination of parts so there are little curve balls being thrown at us around every corner. John's Crazy 406ci Clevor Engine Build Gets Rolling

In this video I start assembling the bottom end of John's, World Products Man-O-War engine block. For the spec mongers out there it is a 9.2" deck height block that is the same as a 351 Cleveland. The crank is a 4340 Eagle with a 4" stroke. The rods are 6.00" Eagle H-Beam units. The bore is 4.020" which puts it at 406 cubic inches. The pistons are from Ross Racing and they have a -31cc dish. I volunteered to help my buddy with sprucing up the head on his 1978 2.3L Cobra II Mustang. It had a few issues that we will go over and I see if some basic port work will be worth the effort on this extremely stock engine.       @@anthonyl9566 Yes. Rear disc brakes also double as C-clip eliminators if I break an axle. I have too much money wrapped up in 4-lug wheels to swap to 5-lug.

      @@Mike-FoxsAbroad I’ve been looking at either the sve kit or the foxbody brake kit so I’d be really interested to see a video of the foxbody brakes being installed. I think I’m staying 4 lug as well and just getting 17” staggered pony’s, I still love the classic look.

      Just me. Nobody really knows anything about tuning Holley EFI in this country that I've found. I Paid £600 for a guy to tune the old 302 but I probably wasted half that time and money for him to fumble his way around the software.

    What powertrain are you thinking Mike? Take the 408W out of the 85, then coyote swap the 85?

      That was a thought. The drivetrain is the last thing I'm thinking of. Restoring the rest of the Car is the hard part. At a minimum I have a set of aluminum Edelbrock performer heads and that rebuilt Tremec TKO I can put in it.

      Those rocker arms are really not great if you can build a solid stand instead of 16 single rocker stands make 8 solids pretty easy I say that but not everyone has there own machine shop in there garage

    I am just finishing up a set of the y302 svo heads which are exact only came loaded springs up to 600 and hyd 135 # seat at 1.850 in and ex and 348# at 1.250 single spring with dampner springs are big but I have no less then4 sets to choose from mine came with ford motorsports g302 1.954in &j302 1.555 exaust valves I fully sonic check the ports mapping thin area to my surprise as well as the ability pop out end freeze plugs there is alot on the table more then ever published I found not many messed with these heads they were pricy back in days and of course RHS,BRODIX,AFR,TFS WERE ALL SWINGING AT THE FENCES for a dollar I set up on superflow found thinest ports exaust and intake an litterally spen last winter while off multiple days extra a week due to snow the timer I set after sonic checking ports and actually developing a overlooked sleeper these heads will support 520 hp on paper at 10:5:1 and 302 ci std bore block I have was wit the deal the cylinder heads in factory cardboard boxes nos with receipts and the ford motorsports I think r302 nos block for 1000 I couldn't pass it even though I already have ported a set of Yates windsor cup car heads and setup for this build I decided to play. More snow on ground car can't move anyways .. the intake numbers at 28"merc flowed factory @ .100 to .600 intake went 68, 117,166,200,214,219 exaust 52,98,129,139,137then backwards 600 lift port went loud and lost I ported them to intakes now 78,145,196,230,252,275 stopped at 700 lift if I didn't know what the next number is I wouldn't want to see it in cam lift so I didn't push 800 I can only lift the valves max 710 exaust came out63,109,141,168,176,190,200 it will cost you about 6 long shank aluminum cut burrs 6" &8" the timmer stopped on all inclusive port design to finishing 5 angle 3 angle valve job was 266 hrs 51minutes time off work from October to May from port development mappingbother ports matching ports checking flow differential from port to port with two intakes one a clover leaf from a cupcar and the all mighty edl Victor efi the clover leaf is converted to efi my standalone is a older motec and msd 7-3 gold ignition with digital readout guage and datalogging I have a set of 7 nos trw forged factory pistons I bought one used that measured same as others I also made lighter tool steal piston pins not much but twice as strong also cut pistons for spiral locks and added better pin oilingbin piston bores I haven't built a for in a long time I have always been a chevy tbt dodge guy first love my dart,cudas, chevell ,nova two door impala biscane with a 540 Donovan ex prostock long block and twin 93 mm precision my apologies for the book I was very happy to see there is actually a winsor 302 build video on UA-cam with svo heads I think yours only

    New to mechanics and trying to figure out why 3550 is stuck in gear. The middle shift rail does no move no matter what it’s stuck in fourth, could this be the reason why?

    Does the '85 have a Mallory ignition box? Do you see a difference in longevity or performance?

      @@jesusmunoz5184 On the 85 I have a “MSD Digital 6+” ignition box. It comes already configured with most of the features I want as I plan on running nitrous one day. I have MSD boxes on four of my vehicles and have installed them on many other cars over the decades. I always notice a performance increase when using one. I’ve never had one go bad. That being said, I’ve never noticed a difference using a hotter ignition coil with them. Even a MSD box with a stock coil is usually just fine.

    This is the first rear disk conversion I've seen that didnt involve changing the brake booster or master cylinder. Is it not necessary?

      @@RJ-zf7fw I asked that question to FoxbodyBrakes and they said it would work with the stock master cyl. After installing there is no issue that John could tell. No reason to install a different m/c.

    Whats the oil temperature ? You should have idle 35+ at 200*f. If not you've got a internal oil leak somewhere... Check the core plug in the top of the block oil gallery, or by the timing chain. Did you drill the timing chain plug to add oil to the timing chain? I always use threaded plugs. Also you might have excessive lifter body clearance OR do your lifter oil passages line up well with the gallery feed when you're using a very high lift cam... aka is the lifter coming up too high for the oil passages.

    Look at the size of the oil filter INLET holes. FL1a and Mobil 1 are the only ones with large holes. Letting oil out is good, but what if it cant get in ??? Does that affect the filter internal bypass? Yes.

    They look nice, but they dont flow all that well. Ask Shelby. 300 to the tires? A modified engine will be restricted. Rocker arms: PRW Sportsman.👍 Never a problem.

      @@doublerrated6735 the cobra intake has been both ported and Extrude Honed. It’s arguably the best flowing Cobra intake I’ve ever seen. I have several other choke points that I’m trying to find the limits of, but the intake is not one of them.

      I don’t know what to say. I’ve had many over the years and never had a single failure. The one on my Mach 1 is an original 6200 that must be 35 years old at least.

      @Mike-FoxsAbroad yeah there was a bad run there on production around 2010. When they first went to the newer design. Super easy to pop circuit boards. Went through 3 then never had a problem again. I believe at thr time they acknowledged they were having issues. All were replaced for free

      @@timelesssteelgarage Hmm. I have one of the very first black 6A boxes on my F100. Think that was around 2014 or 2015 though. I’ve never purchased a newer 6AL box though as modern EFI controls rev limits and such.

    Question why didn't yall just run thicker & better cable from the back to the front? Just a question I've seen plenty of batteries in the trunk but I've never heard of issues just curious.

      Once we started to add up the costs of a new full length 0 gauge ground cable, as well as a new matching positive cable for good measure. Then we add in the cost of new good quality terminal ends. (remember, we are in England. Stuff costs a lot more here) Then routing another cable under the carpet where there wasn't much more space. Then you factor in the additional weight penalty. The simplicity and cost of putting the battery up front just wins every time. Racers that think the battery needs to be in the rear are just kidding themselves. Unless you need a shutoff to comply with sanctioning rules, there is no good reason other than needing the battery's real estate for something else. That's the reason the factory did it back in the day. Like the Boss 429. They put the battery in the trunk as they ran out of room in the engine compartment.

    Wow, great video I just came across this You're all set up nice little test set. I have a question, maybe you could answer, I have a1987 ford f150 I'm having a no start issue with my truck. All it does is crank. I have Spark, I can hear either fuel tanks. Fuel pump kick in when I turn the Ignition on the only way I get it to start. Is when i spray starting fluid into the intake. She will start, and then stall. Can this be a computer issue? Also, for the fuel pumps I seen your tester had the green light on it. For your fuel pump, I'm just scratching my head. Why this truck won't start not knowing if this could be my issue? Maybe you could help me out. With that question, I would appreciate it, I'm out of New York. You reached me all the way over here with your video lol

      @@nickpanhead7209 if you hear the pump prime for 1 sec after the key is turned then it’s not the EEC. Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Remove a line from the fuel filter and start tracking it down.

I removed it and blew through it with no. Issues? But like you said, maybe it's something further back. Thanks again.I really do appreciate it

    I see you are using the stock tach. They are not accurate. I bet a real tach would also help with ET since you will know the real rpms you are at. I bet getting a Tinker 7" screen would help with ET.

      @@ford9050 we both have shift lights triggered by the Terminator X. Mine was set at 7k but I was shifting at 6800ish. John’s wasn’t working after we had his dash all ripped apart after the roll cage install. Something to look into.

    Im getting ready to install my tkx with rxt twin disk. I have the adjustabke pivot stud. You say set the adjustable stud 3/8" shorter than the stock one and it should be good?

      @@RJ-zf7fw that worked for me twice so far using a cast aluminum bellhousing. Make sure to test it before assembling everything in case your parts/application is different.

    How it holding up? I was told you need to open the unit and soak the clutch plates in friction modifier?

      He is driving it now and leaving two black lines. It didn't need any disassembly. He installed it using some Royal Purple gear oil as it says it's suitable for limited slip differentials. It is a little groany when warm and turning in a parking lot. He is seeing if it quiets down after more break-in before adding any friction modifier to it. It's not annoying or anything. Just not 100% silent.

    Sorted out the starting issue, added another earth strap in the trunk. Tomorrow will be a good test 👍
