Alan Chapell on Living On Music
Alan Chapell is not just a musician - he's a cultural alchemist who mixes the sonic textures of the 80s and 90s with the introspective lyricism of the 70s. He blends a lifetime of making music with an advanced degree in privacy and human rights, giving him a rare dual perspective that resonates deeply in his songwriting. Along with his musical success, Alan has carved out a niche as an attorney, advising tech companies on privacy issues. When the producers of HBO's "Silicon Valley" consider creating a character to lampoon your role in the tech space, you know you've made it. Chapell's albums are currently being played on over 150 radio stations in the U.S. and he's played to jam-packed houses around the world from Mumbai to Managua. Chapell has shared the stage with a variety of rock icons including Bighead Todd, Little River Band, Tim Reynolds, Edgar Winter, Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Lisa Loeb, 38 Special, Bighead Todd, Iron Butterfly, Flock of Seagulls and Jackopearce. Chapell is averaging over 50K monthly listening on Spotify. One of Chapell's albums from 2016 was The Redhead’s Allegations was produced by his good friend & Grammy Award-winner/Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Harrison from Talking Heads.

Al Stewart has been a favorite of mine for over forty years, and I just saw him (July 20) live in Sherman, TX, as part of the city's Hot Summer Nights outdoor concert series, accompanied by a band from Chicago, The Empty Pockets. It was awesome. It was also pretty cool to hear mention of others connected to other favorites of mine. Hank Marvin of the Shadows was a huge influence on Mike Oldfield (best known for TUBULAR BELLS) who had a hit in the UK with his version of the Shadows "Wonderful Land". The Shadows returned the favor, so to speak, with an instrumental version of Oldfield's biggest pop song "Moonlight Shadow". And Marty Wilde is Kim Wilde's ("Kids In America") father.

There have been a lot of 'new Dylans'. Apart from Steve Forbert, their number has included Donovan, John Prine, Bruce Springsteen, Loudon Wainwright III. The label never accurately described these great artists. It reduced them.

I am 56 and I just watched About Last Night with Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. I faintly heard a song playing in the background in one of the scenes. I decided to look it up. It was Step by Step by Karla Bonoff and J.D. Souther. What a beautiful song, brought me to tears. They were both excellent as their voices blended so beautifully. It was the one most beautiful love songs I have ever heard. I can't believe it never became a top 10 hit. Karla is an amazing talent. People are right, she does not get enough credit. She needs to fire her manager as she should be a household name.

This is a Beautiful interview with Al Stewart. Thanks so much for posting this Steve. I've heard much of Al's early history but I thought I'd learned it all, only after I first bought Al's Past Present and Future album, that he speaks of at 35 minutes into the interview. It was originally played locally here in Portland Oregon on KINK Radio FM 102, in early 1973. That was the first time we discovered Al Stewart locally. My first girlfriend who later became my wife of over 22 years, and I, went to see Al play here live, as his first performance locally in Portland. Of all places, in the Mount Hood Community College gymnasium, just minutes away from where I later designed and built our first home for my wife and daughter and myself in 1988. Al gave a spectacular performance of the long song about Russian history, as an historic video was projected on an overhead screen. I didn't realize at the time, that we were getting a great historical account of the early 20th century Europe, with beautiful music, composed and performed by Al Stewart. The next album I actually recorded with my new Wollensak tape deck, as the same aforementioned KINK FM local radio played a new album once a week on Wednesday nights, I still have this recording today, of the Year of the Cat album, on a high quality Maxell cassette tape, that I still play often on my home stereo system. My wife had already purchased the vinyl record so I still have that today in like new pristine condition. I then bought every successive Al Stewart album release that came out afterwards, and still today, all these albums are timeless masterpieces. It was about 2010 that I took a lady friend and other young guy friends to see Bert Jansch perform here in Portland, in the Mississippi Studios. I walked up after the concert and had him autograph one of the pentangle's famous albums Sweet Child, and spoke with Bert briefly. It was a great pleasure to hear in your interview, of Al talk about Bert in the early days, and that episode with Jimmy Page stealing Burt's arrangement of Black Waterside. I audio-visually recorded a a short video of him playing this to a crowd that was in that small theater here, as many people were in tears, listening to Bert play and sing. I was crushed when I heard he passed away a couple years later. [One last note here, as a local connection in Portland with Al Stewart's band, I grew up with local musicians on the far Northeast edge of Portland in the Parkrose Heights district, that one, named Bill Lamb, went on to play and record with several of Al Stewart's former band members, Peter White, on keyboards, and one of Al's other side guitar players. I believe this was in the late 1980s to early 1990's.] Thanks again so much for this great interview, Steve.
