On a Budget? My cold weather ADV gear used in 2016
Переглядів 1777 років тому
Summer time in Alaska usually means our rainy season. Riding at altitude with rain, the temp can quickly change from 50F to 40F. 2016 was my first year in ADV riding in Alaska. Many things to acquire for my trips. After 4,000 miles, these are my thoughts of how I saved money on the gear I used for multi-day road trips in Alaska and Canada. I love love love natos and zulus. I'm not into leather watch straps and metal bracelets (in hot weather climates) are just uncomfortable on my wrist. But you are absolutely spot on; natos do make some watches ride very high. I use natos a lot but depending on the type of watch will depend on how I wear the nato. Passing the shorter end down to the bottom of the wrist (buckle area) instead of under the watch works great. 😉

Yes, the sarb has nice hands and dial. A steal back in the day, until Seiko wised up. What would I change: the clasp and I'd add sapphire to the back.

Received mine as a gift from my uncle. At first I never wore it because it was an "homage" watch. But, I felt guilty when my mom asked me if I ever wore it and I told her I didn't. I began wearing it last year and realized what a dummy I was. It's a good watch and looks great on wrist. I'm more impressed with specs (316L steel, sapphire crystal, automatic self-winding movement, several micro-adjustments) after learning about them on YT. My uncle loves his and it's his one & only watch. He bought me one after I complimented his. I was a bad nephew for not wearing it initially, but am making up for it in earnest. It has garnered the most wrist-time in the past year. Recently, I've been wearing it NATO straps and like it even more. I always disliked the way NATOs looked, but it took wearing them for me to change my mind completely. Now I love them. Anyway, great video. Nice shots of the Alpha next to the Hamilton.

Err just use a Zulu or a Perlon strap. I like Nato because your spring bar pins will not be exposed to your skin therefore not exposed to sweat.

The Black and Gray strap is not the Bond Strap. The strap on your black dive watch is the Bond. With the brown tones in it. Don't you have the internet? That misconception was cleared up long ago. Your watch strap needed tightened up. One more hole tighter and you get a snug fit. SHeesh. That was hard to watch.

I go for a two piece RAF strap. Very thin and it’s in two pieces the watch actually sits on your wrist not on material. I have the same problem with having small wrists too, found NATO straps too bulky and the material uncomfortable to wear. My RAF strap is seatbelt material so it is very comfortable. Check Clockwork Synergy out!

I don't like top-heavy diver watches for the same reason you do not like NATO straps. Too cumbersome and bulky. I like the NATOs on what I consider practical sized watches

  • @monkeyman8265

I like the look of nato straps but the hardware digs into my skinny wrists and it drives me nuts that I can't wear my nato's for long periods of time.

I own this waych for over 2 years now. It's a great watch, I love it. Well made, a real heft to it. It feels quality, It is quality. I had problems with the divers expension as well. Everybody does. The trick is, that you first click the extension in the clasp and then you straight out the clasp in line with the bracelet. Hard to describe this movement, but try it in this way and it will stay locked. You should make a video of this trick, that will explain it much better. But first you have to master the sequence of folding in and staighten out. Everybody first tries to get the clasp in line with the bracelet and then try to lock in the extension. That doesn't work, it pops out every time. The right way is, first the extension in the clasp and then straighten the clasp in line with the bracelet. Success.

You can remove the strap underneath. Use a scissors. Those with the extra strap are called Zulus . I prefer the extra strap and either type is good insurance when you lose a pin bar.

Thanks for the idea to cut the second part off the nato. I am guessing that this is a common thing to do for instance if you decide to NATO any of the Gshocks with a strap adapter. The way it works it wont allow that second strap to really function they way it is meant to, so you can snip it and use it like a standard ZULU strap. If anyone is curious, Jay kay makes adapters for the G Shocks, so then you dont have to use the stupid proprietary 16mm springbars as means to use a NATO.

I do the same thing with my nato straps. So much more comfortable having one layer on a thinner strap. You might also want to use a lighter on the edges to prevent fraying

I have the Seagull Ocean Star which although more expensive the overall quality is excellent. It has a Sapphire chrystal and is not really a homage as Seagull tend to do their own thing This Alpha is great value though. My son is going to get the Alpha Daytona.
