What If Indiana Jones Was as Good as Zorro With a Bullwhip?

Watching the 2024 Zorro series on Amazon got me thinking of where and how theatrical/movie whip has advanced and what we could do today. This is a combination of my thoughts on martial applications of the bullwhip as used by Indiana Jones and also my continued personal explorations of how a whip is an area denial martial tool in the hands of a competent user. I also highly suggest you check out...

A truly functionally correct version of the whip featured in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This whip takes accuracy to a higher level then many of the fine KotCS whips we have on the market today. Good analysis and whip form. I like the refined/simplified way of thinking that you’ve tailored to your specific needs. I haven’t gotten into cosplay as much yet, but I’ve started to assemble some pieces. More than anything, it seems like Indy uses his gear because it is what he has and because it works for what he needs. You put it really well that wearing the bag under the jacket doesn’t allow the bag to work well, which is counterproductive.

    Just wanted to give some follow up. I ended up with one of the krist king bullwhips from western stage props that is treated with boiled lindseed oil. Stiff as hell when i got it and it seemed like it was going to be a lost cause. It has taken a long time but it has finally softened. I probably have 4 or 5 hours of cracking into it. I have kneeded it a bit with my hands to work out some stiffer sections. And I have washed it in a bucket of really hot soapy water a few times which really helped it relax. So now it rolls out smooth and performs well.

  • @zachhandler
    @zachhandler Рік тому

    I am curious about that krist king whip. Has it softened up with use? I remember how stif it was in the prior video. Also I wonder if you can snug up the ties around the handle to minimize movement between handle and thong. I have only one cow whip, made by a guy in texas, and there is no movement between the thong and the socket of the wooden handle.

    • @supersonicstudios9201
      @supersonicstudios9201 Рік тому

      It has not! I don't use it much but I imagine if I was using it to work cows regularly it'd break in nicely. It's my opinion that the movement is intentional, much like a swivel handle whip. I guess your milage may vary. Thanks for the note.

    • @zachhandler
      @zachhandler Рік тому

      I just bought a krist king 8ft cow whip. Based on the stiffness you encountered i went with an unwaxed one. It is soft as butter. I was thinking i might wax it in my own as a fun project. The handle is interesting. The fall sits on the cup and pivots freely. I have one other florida cow whip and that one has a deep cup that the fall sits in at least 2” deep. There is no movement whatsoever between handle and fall, so it throws like a wood handle bullwhip. I am not sure which is the standard. I think you could get a handle from a different cowwhip maker pretty cheap. Or maybe just enlarge the cup in your existing handle. I bet you would get more use out of it then.

    • @zachhandler
      @zachhandler Рік тому

      I wonder if you could use a solvent like pain thinner or acetone to remove or at least soften up the cured linseed oil that is in fibers of the whip. Maybe test that on a small section? I only cracked my unwaxed 8 ft krist king once. I was inside so i threw an overhand flick so i wouldn’t hit the ceiling. Wow it rolled out effortlessly! So i am thinking yours might be awesome if you can get the hardened oil out.

    I collect Terry's whips. I've studied his work for many years. He made many variants throughout the 1990s and 2000s. However, this whip was not made in the 1990s. At the earliest, it was made in 2005/2006.

      @@supersonicstudios9201 There are so many things to consider. It's more than a few things that at first had subtle changes ultimately leading to drastic changes. It would be far too cumbersome to detail an outline here in a comment, but there are about 12 or 13 variants (that I've counted so far) of what is known as his standard Australian bullwhip. The following are areas I've studied on the different makes . . . Handle size e.g., thickness and length; taper of the handle e.g. toward the thing or toward the butt; core of the handle e.g. cane or fiberglass; diamond count between the butt and turkshead knot; size and type of wrap that creates the butt and turkshead knots; level of stiffness for the first 10-20 inches of the thong after the turkshead knot; width of the strands of the thong and thickness and the taper of the thong; shape and weight of the whip; etc.

      Have to concur with Royce's dating of the Jacka whip. I too have a quite large collection of whips - including many by Terry over the years. This is for sure around mid 2000's or a bit later. I don't even think David Morgan was carrying them anymore at that time - I would assume this was one made for and purchased through Western Stage Props with Mark Allen.

    You are having too much fun. I used to love working with an 8ft bull whip in the 70's. I was taught to use this as crowd control as used in some penitentiary work gangs back in the good old day's. As a weapon you remove the popper (illegal?) and practice cutting coffee cans open, not beer cans. Are you left handed? Looks like Indie is right handed. I identify as ambidextrous, last bull whip was stolen 30 yrs ago. I practiced finely trimming trees and bushes ended up doing demonstrations and tricks at out door events. Just purchased a 10 footer and four footer and maybe just maybe I'll be able to show a video some day. I'ts hard to find a hobby for me in the big city but should be able to get away with this in a park. I would love to practice throwing axes but man when those bounce or ricochet that can piss off the locals. Refuse to take up knitting...again.

    i just ordered this because of this review. i dont make whip videos. well i did one this week. i do other kids. but i love indy. and i got a whip at a flea market. it had a fall but no popper. but the whip was dry and a cheaper one than this one even. and 12 feet long. but i made a longer popper. as after i used this old whip. that was dry. even after i used leather oil on it 2 times. it came unbraided. so i have this waxed cordage that is awesome i use for many things. i used a method of tying it and cut off the part that came unbraided. and i just made a longer cracker. so it is a whip. no fall but it has a longer cracker. it is now 11 feet long. but i used it in my new video. so my first whip cracks of my life are on a junky one i fixed to some degree that is 11 feet long. but i got some loud cracks after about 5 minutes of practice after never doing it in my life on a junky super long whip. i gave you a sub. i will be making some whip and indy videos to as i do walking dead. inja. samurai. guns. archery. survival. race cars. bmx. and tons of other stuff. but if you want check out my new 1 minute whip crack video with that junky whip i fixed up. i cant wai tto et this amazon whip. so the popper on my whip in my new video. i hand braided. 3 strands of small strong cordage. 2 special knots and i made it tassle on the end.

  • @fluent_in_bedhead
    @fluent_in_bedhead 3 роки тому

    Hi james! I also have a krist king cow whip, he actually treats his whips with linseed oil which is why it is stiffer and feels different. If linseed treated whips arent used regularly right after they are treated, they will develop a stiffness like the ones you and I have. That bias does make it harder to be accurate with the whip, but I think a lot of targeting accuracy comes from the user (id agree though, not for using near people). I found that learning to be accurate with my cow whip has made me Even more controlled with more responsive whips. What that whip lacks in accuracy it makes up for in durability, which is why krist uses linseed. If you want to crack a whip anywhere that a cattle drive would take you, thats the whip to do it with

      The thing with the Indy Whip is Morgan makes the Morgan, not the Indy. If an SA whip is what you want you'll need to go to another maker and it will be cheaper. DelCarpio and MidWest Whips are where one should go to get SA depending on the film. No one offers a SA KotCS whip as a "stock" item currently.
