What is your definition of a gunsmith.
Переглядів 17521 день тому
What is your definition of a gunsmith. What makes a gunsmith different from the rest of the hobbyist out there. It is it simply being able to complete a rifle in its entirety from start to finish. The last missing piece of the puzzle to close the gap entirely is turning the rifle chamber from a service that only a few can provide to a component that anyone can buy and install with simple hand t...

When talking about the magnums and 30 caliber hunting rifles, most accept the recoil delivered out of the box. Some think I am "anti-magnum" for this reason. I am not and really want to spread the word that if you are recoil sensitive or a younger shooter, you do not have to be anti-magnum either. There are many tricks to dropping the recoil and the big 30 calibers have huge range you can play ...

We are diving into the 7mm calibers. Any chance you can get them to recoil in the enjoyable range of 0-10 Foot pounds of energy on the shooter? You bet, and we will explain how along with some other reasons why this so is important besides just recoil reduction. A really important and ofter overlooked tool is setting up your rifle to be able to self spot. We also answer a listeners question on ...

Moving on to the 6.5 calibers in Magnums. This is where I think the divide starts with newer shooters starting to have either negative reactions to the shot or at least reducing the fun. That said, there are ways to make the bigger 6.5's more than capable of killing altmost any big game animal in the world without killing the sender in the process. We want to share some our experiences with you...

The 6.5 short action calibers...this is where most of the separation starts when it comes to the line in the sand for big game. In the US, it is considered unethical by some. In Europe, it is the number one moose caliber used. What is the difference? We will let you be the judge as we make the case as to why this is such a great caliber for new, young, or recoil sensitive shooters. It's about s...

Again, our focus is improving the accuracy of the shooter and the enjoyment of their experience with the rifle. Big news, we want to give something nice away for all those attending o...

I thought this was a great interview with Derick. It was not planned and not recorded to be one, but in the end Derick ask if he could post it. Of course, I said yes. Derick attended our shooting school in March of 2024 and purchased a custom rifle featuring the ACE from us last year. He is not only a great guy, but a Veteran and former Drill Sergeant. Barreled actions or assembled rifle kit?
Returning to this video for a second time. Have you an experience with the McMillan U-10 stocks? I'm curious how they compare to the A-5/A-6 stocks and why someone would choose a U-10 over an A-5/A-6
Can you increase your mic volume? I have to turn volume to max, then my ears are blasted when the ad after the video comes on. I don't have that issue with other channels.
If there's a great video on precision rifle building, it's this one. Adam and Jamie are the A-Team of knowledge and gunsmithing. Happy Thanksgiving, Gents!
Thanks Terry and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Great topic to discuss! I like both the video and audio formats, it just depends on where I’m listening. I like the audio only in the truck and shop, which is primarily where I listen. The video is great when there is show and tell.
Agree, well try to have some more items on the desk to talk about. Thank you for the feedback.
Appreciate the pod cast....
What twist did you decide on for the 208’s in your 308?
1-8 twist. It was custom made by Krieger. Super fun to shoot at distance. Was slow, less than 2500fps but the BC more than made up for it.
I had a 22-250 ackley that loved to vaporize some heavy bullets !
I wish manufacturers still offered 223 and 22-250 in a 1:12 twist. It makes no sense when almost all the hunting ammo for 223 and 22-250 comes in 50 to 55 grain projectiles and almost all the gun manufacturers make make 22-250 in a 1:14 or 223 in 1:9. Fortunately I do own an older CZ in 223 with 1:12 twist, it shoots 40 to 55 grain under 3/4” consistently, in some ammo 1/2” groups. I have had people type back, “ I have a 1:7 twist that gets moa” or “it’s funny how some people don’t know how to shoot”. I just disregard those. I have experienced in 223 in 1:9, 1:8 and 1:7. In 22-250 I have tried several 1:14 none of them have produced moa or better at 100 yards. I have tried multiple ammo manufacturers in both 223 and 22-250. I just wish they would bring back the 1:12 twist in a hunting rifle for 223 and 22-250. Why do people think you have to fix something that is not broken.
The faster the twist rate the more spin drift you get down range. Over spinning a bullet can be a problem at long range because it can cause the bullet to spin itself apart (jacket separation) and disintegrate before reaching the target. It's best consult the bullet manufacture to determine the maximum RPM of the bullet and stay at or below that. The faster you push a bullet the less twist rate you will need. Twist rate and bullet speed are closely connected. The slower the bullet the more twist you need, the faster the bullet then you'll need less twist.
Hey that is awesome. I just did a little short on the BAT decocking tool. Doing a full video soon. This was cool to watch especially since I own a BAT because of you! Great job!
New tool coming. Will be doing a review shortly. Much easier.
Jamie, you brought up a point in regards to you tube ....with a comparison to sailing and shooting and or training videos....I agree with your point 100% It unfortunately is a political agenda.....I feel safe calling it that. Just my view and opinion. Respectfully Mark Parker
Thank you. I meant to ask you about how to do that when I was there in July. Looks pretty easy to me. Ken S.
Any reason the barreled action could not be flipped so trigger is up to avoid contaminates getting into the trigger?
Not a bad idea and I guess it would work, but still might wind up with it running down the bore guide and into the receiver.
Handy little tricks!
The All-in-One Fix It Sticks are listed as having a +/- 10% accuracy. The individual torque limiters have +/- 6% accuracy. When mounting scopes, do you think the All-in-One is acceptable or do you prefer the individual limiters? Along those lines, do you use thread locker on your scope rings-not just the base screws? I understand thread locker affects torque readings, if you do use it do you shoot for the lower range of recommended torque?
I do prefer the individual limiters but the All-In-One would work just fine too.
Thanks for a great video.
For my mobile device it works bees helpful if your vids has increased audio output. Adequate if in a quiet environment, but lacking when I have to use maximum volume through my hearing aides and still struggle to hear certain consonants. Good stuff when I can hear it. Just making a suggestion. Thanks.
Love what you covered here. Shot placement and bullet selection are paramount, and being able to use your equipment and knowing what it can do (with both external and terminal ballistics) are equally important. I shoot a 6.5 Grendel AR for mostly varmint and predator hunting and use a 6.5 Creedmoor for everything else. Different bullets, barrels and rifles for different purposes. I plan on building a 6GT just for fun and maybe a 7 SAUM as my 'big caliber' rifle. All things in due time Edit: I shoot a 50-55lb trad bow, and compound wise a 70lb bow is ideal for me. I'm relatively young and strong so I can draw heavier in either, I just prefer not to. Those draw weights are the sweet spot for me and I build arrows to fit what I'm doing, both the light and fast and the slow and heavy, with appropriate broadheads for any given situation
It is very unfortunate a lot of people don’t realize that rifle stocks doesn’t always form perfectly with the rifle. And a rifle stock with no bedding is always bad.
Been waiting on this one. Thanks! Quick question, what make/model/manufacturer is that bench? I need to upgrade.
How often do you clean it ?
Usually a maintenance clean when out it weather or the field for long periods of time. I will be doing that video today. Full cleans about every 200 rounds or so. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
Can & how is shipping to Canada from you.
If you find an importer that you like on your side, they usually have a state side ffl that handles it from us. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
quality content - but you should have made cleaning it and rebuilding it into a single video. I'm not sure why you felt like separating the information out was necessary. Very interesting though, I wanted to keep watching!
Trying to keep the videos shorter and quick and easy to do as things cross my desk or mind. We will be doing the next video today. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
I weigh every charge! I use a powder thrower to dispense powder into the scale pan, a trickler to round off the charge weight on a beam scale, and then I set the pan onto a digital scale as a double check. If the two scales do not agree I recheck the beam scale poises and re-zero the digital scale. Normally it is the digital scale that has drifted, but once it was a beam scale poise got moved by accident. Either way all my powder charges get checked three times. Twice by scales and once with a visual, in the loading block, after I have charged a batch before seating bullets. I do what I do for safety, not speed, cause as the old saying goes "SPEED KILLS!" And I encourage all to not find out the hard way. All in all, none the less I can charge cases in the same amount of time that it takes for one of the digital auto trickler scales.
That is s solid process, reloading and being in a hurry is a recipe for disaster. Double and triple checking scales and charges weights is always a good idea. Thank you for sharing.
@@wolfprecisioninc And you have given golden advise that the rest of handloader should heed! As the use of a balance beam is best you see, when it comes to the health of the shooter and all bystanders that be.
What about taking the action off? Do you ever do that to get between the action and the ACE?
Great questions, only when changing calibers do we clean that area. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
Big fan of the Super Trickler. I have had some great results with it. I know they don't make the scale but it comes with the same scales you are using but the system working together has been very consistent for me.
Thanks for the info!
I really wanted to do this but it was not a thing when I purchased but when I do my next build I am budgeting that in!
Totally agree! Best way to go. Jamie knows what he is doing!
This is how I got my set up from wolf and I would highly recommend it.
I don't think ive ever seen a video on cleaning the scope let alone cleaning it in the sink like that. Very interesting stuff!
Glad you liked it! Even with high end camera lenses, its a great trick to keep them clean and scratch free. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
Going to pick one of those log books up!
Very excited to see more content coming out from you guys. I love my wolf build and couldn't be happier to be part of the PACK!
The Vise with you logo finally on it looks great. As for Gunsmith vise the new Rock Vise are amazing and reasonably priced!
Thanks! I've always set them against the front so that they should not shift during recoil but then I heard you mention the flex and bite on the podcast. Since then I've been dying to see if you had a special way of setting them in the center space for repeatable zero. Simple as and now I have some work to do on a couple rifles. Thank you for posting this content for the people!
Will you be uploading a video on youtube about how to remove and remount optic with minimal/no zero change or will that only be available on the gunsmithing school? I've always been curious about it since hearing it on the podcast.
Yes, in upcoming video's for sure. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
Is it possible to make this stock Left handed? 🤔 I have the ruger american predator 308win would love to se a DIY video on how its posible 🤠👍 greetings from norway🇧🇻
They make it in left hand now. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
It’s the other way round, Swarofski owns Kahless.
You are correct, Thanks for watching and correcting. Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
So this will only accept a 1.250 diameter? Nothing smaller ?
Yes, 1.250 that is made for our ACE system but will work for other barrels if the diameter and length of the shank is 1.25 shank and 1.5" long
Jamie is such a stud! Best school house on the planet!
Your are awesome : ). Thank you!
How was this rifle shooting before vs after bedding?
They usually shoot fine, but may shift POI in and out of the stock or move around a little. I always bed my own rifles and school rifles. It's a good insurance policy. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
What about using something like the Wiz Wheel from Accuracy 1st, it’s a lot cheaper for those of us that don’t have enough cheese for a Kestrel etc…I’m willing to bet the batteries won’t die & the screen won’t crack either. 😉 Thoughts?
Thanks for watching and for the great question, it is worth talking about and will be doing a video on that this week because you ask it.. Thank you, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
@ I use 2x Truemiller, one for yards and one for meters, in combination with a Wiz Wheel - it’s a good budget combination for those of us that don’t have the money to spend. Obviously, it’s not as comprehensive as a portable ballistic calculator with wind, humidity and barometric pressure etc as the Kestrels but, it’s also all I got so…learning to read wind and keeping good DOPE is definitely necessary.
Is this ambidextrous?
I believe they make a left hand now
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
I wonder if just corncob etc. mixed with a couple of spoons of HBN would do the trick? Corncob, HBN and bullets.
Not sure I have have never tried it. Thanks for watching and for the question, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
Jamie I ordered one from you a year ago and haven't received it. Can I get one from you now. Randy
Hi Randy, off course. I don't know what happened, sometimes they get lost in the mail or worse. We will get it out to you today and we all sincerely apologize. Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
$1600 per action,yikes.
Thanks for watching and for the reply. The Ignitors are what we build the most on and are $1230 which makes them a great deal for BAT action and the quality they produce, Jamie Dodson. Wolf Precision, Inc.
Amya Key
Do you have a video showing how you bedded this chassis? Thanks
No video on this rifle but some gunsmithing classes coming up next year.
Hey, thanks for a great overview. Would you mind telling me, are these both 19" barrels?
What is the brand and model of stock in thumbnail. Looks like a hunting stock that finally has extra high comb
That is a PSE, a really great designed stock for sure. We have build several hunting rifles on them now and we are all very impressed with this stock.
