70’s traffic signal technology with a dial motor
Переглядів 1,7 тис.4 роки тому
Check out this relic I was doing maintenance on today. It’s at a ped crossing and there are signal lights to stop traffic for pedestrians to cross. As the dial motor rotates it actuates the solenoid which turns the camshaft which causes different outputs. Before modern day electronics this is how nearly all traffic signals operated. Some were actuated by vehicle presence and some were just simp...

The Anti-Entropy Machine Version 2, now with more Skittles!!
Переглядів 6 тис.8 років тому
This is the follow up to the original video. People wanted to know what would happen if you used Skittles instead of M&Ms. I decided I was going to modify the machine and add a selector switch so you could choose which candy you wanted to sort, but first for science I wanted to run Skittles through to see what happened. Turns out the colors of Skittles and M&Ms are pretty dang close. Obviously ...

We started the semester with several sheets of aluminum, various metal rods, a small billet of aluminum, a PCB with all the fixins in a bag, and a piece of wood. The professor gave us plans and a little guidance, this is the end result. I "upgraded" mine a bit by polishing everything I could as well as getting a piece of hardwood, finishing it, and putting a detail on the edge. For the project ...

Electromagnet is controlled by an op-amp using input from the light dependant resistor. When the globe covers the light the electromagnet receives more current which pulls the globe closer. The 2 dials on the bottom are used to adjust the sensitivity of the op-amp and the power of the electromagnet.

    What is a blower and what is its purpose?

    • @drummerboy4as
      @drummerboy4as Рік тому

      This blower is essentially a really big fan. It’s purpose is to blow fresh air over the traction motors (the electric wheel that drive the locomotive) to keep them cool and to keep dirt and dust out.

      @@drummerboy4as we had an external load box. It's about the size of large phone booth and it's all grids. We used it for testing really old GPs that didn't have self load.. one night (graveyard shift) we overloaded it.. lmfao, next morning the managers came in to just a smoldering pile of metal... I still laugh thinking about it.

    Hey, Ethan. Great build. How reliable is your M&M extractor (the rotating piece of clear acrylic)? Ever get any jams? If so, how often?

    • @drummerboy4as
      @drummerboy4as 8 років тому

      Involute1052 thanks! It's actually pretty reliable with fresh candy. When I was testing and running the same candy over and over they would start to get sticky and jam up. The mechanism for sorting took quite a bit of trial and error to make it reliable.

    • @karllautman-family
      @karllautman-family 8 років тому

      What's the ID of the tube feeding the M&Ms into the extractor? That looks like an important dimension for making it work, but maybe not.

    • @drummerboy4as
      @drummerboy4as 8 років тому

      ID of that tube is about an inch. It's big enough to allow 3 candies to rest at the bottom at the same time but loose enough so they can move. Any smaller and they get stuck
