A channel for me to keep videos of fly fishing trips and outings and share with other fisherman.... but mostly just for me to re-watch during winter time.

April 2024. First full day on the water. High winds and very clear conditions made it tough to land good casts without being detected. Filmed with GoPro Hero 10 and iPhone SE

April 2024. We got in early to Grant County area in SW Wisconsin and decided to squeeze in a few hours of fishing before heading to the cabin. The rain came about halfway through which helped a little bit with the low clear water conditions. Bitterroot Fly Fishing 2020, Episode 1: Morning skunk and afternoon fish.
On sunny days you need to avoid casting shadows on the water. Trout can sense this from far away and panicked Trout will race upstream alerting other Trout.
Yeah I agree. That was definitely the challenge in the morning on this day in the smaller stream. I could see them running before I knew what was going on. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
That's barely a kitten! 😊
Yeah, definitely a little guy but they always feel heavy on the line
@w.driftinflies lol..they do! I catch a lot of them that size!
Hey DR! Nice visit to some of my home water. Remember, keep 'em wet and fish barbless! Time out of water can be fatal long after an apparently "safe" release.
It's my favorite river to fish. Wish it was my home water too. All my hooks are barbless or de-barbed and I always strive to minimize "air time" for the fish. You may be referring to some of my compatriots featured in the video, who I try to coach on fish handling when I can. Thanks for watching.
@@w.driftinflies On behalf of the trout, thanks for your efforts to take good care of them. This is especially important as we're actually losing westslope cutthroats on the West Fork and downriver into the main stem. Overfishing and barbed hooks (and subsequent mishandling) are among the causes of decline. Modeling and educating your viewers on careful fish handling will win you a lot of support - many casual anglers who want to take care of the resources but don't know how will appreciate what you can teach them.
@@chuckstranahan5600 couldn’t agree more. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll continue to do the best to demonstrate good fish handling skills. I’ve been coming to the Bitterroot every fall since 1999. We have noticed fluctuations in cutthroat populations for sure. I also think the mainstream practices of fish handling and the effects of it has changed in that time. Anglers were not as careful 20 years ago. I know I was guilty when I started.
Whenever I have a fish unbutton my first move is to grab my file and sharpen the hook. Super sharp hooks catch fish. Thanks for the vid!
Yeah, good pointer. I actually had a friend use his sharpener once after I lost like three fish in a row. Hooked the next one solid and into the net
Great video mate! I subbed to your channel.
Thanks. and thanks for the sub. I'll be sure to check out your stuff. Especially the fly tying videos 👍
Couldn't agree more with jrad 28. Super important to handle the fish properly.
Yeah I get it. I almost always wet my hands. Sometimes I dunk them but it’s out of frame. Made the mistake of documenting one of the few times I didn’t. 🤷🏻♂️ UA-cam misses nothing…
Might want to read up on proper fishing handling techniques - super important to wet your hand before handling a trout.
If trout were as fragile as your ego, there wouldn't be any.
@@standingbear998 you are SO perceptive. I DO have a very fragile ego. Before I go curl up in the fetal position, let me just apologize for triggering you Cupcake.
Love and miss the west fork!! Spent many years there🎣🎣
It's a great river. Thanks for watching
It's not the same. Treaure your memories.
I like this fishing too.😍
Só pega peixe quem vai pescar 🎣 parceiro
Gorgeous fish, just like the cutts on the north fork of the Flathead. But not much sport compared to those rainbows below Holter dam on the Missouri, or all the fish varieties on the Little Bighorn. The rainbows actually jump, cutts just tug.
Thanks. Yeah, you can usually tell pretty quick when you hook into a rainbow vs a cut.
Had a chance to fish the bitterroot last spring. Beautiful river. Great video too!
Thanks. It’s one of my favorites
Looks like a fantastic time! Great footage!
Yep, beautiful water and weather for sure! Great conditions for flyfishing! 😁 Looks like a great time.
Can’t get enough of it
What is the brand of landing net please
Hello. It's nothing special. I bought it at Bass Pro for like $30. I think it's by a brand called "White River" but I don't have it hand right now.
Nice video ... looks like you guys had a great trip. What time of year? ... late-August / early-Sept?
Always a great trip the the bitterroot. It was actually early October
@@w.driftinflies its now on my bucket list!
Sweet video, looks like a beautiful river. New subscriber here. Can't wait to check out more of your Montana videos!
Thanks. I've got one last segment coming out from this trip.

Very interesting ninja move that brown used to get away.
No kidding. I got the distinct feeling he'd done it before. Thanks for watching
Great video guys. Fished the Bitterroot a few days ago and loved it. 👍
It’s the best. Thanks
She's a beaut Clark!
I know that bridge.
Great little spot.
Hello. Great video. My wife and I will be spending a week south of Darby in June. I hate to ask but will: where is this spot - is it west or east of Hiway 93?
Thanks. It is West of 93. Hard to go wrong with any of the water there.
@@w.driftinflies Thank you so much. It will be fun to explore. You are very generous with your information. It was a really good video. Again, thanks.
@@nhjordans I hope the trip goes well
nothing wrong with whitefish. Make great fun in the winter especially. I still target them in the winter. Can be just as difficult to get to bite as a trout.
You are correct, sir. They are especially welcome when you haven’t had a bite all morning.
