Saginaw vs Ford power steering
Переглядів 23 тис.8 років тому
This is a video about Saginaw and Ford power steering pumps. The Saginaw pump in this video will eventually be bolted onto the 4.9 straight six and into my 1991 Ford Bronco. Part numbers for the featured pieces in the video are: Ford power steering bracket: FOTA-19E708-BA Ford power steering pump: E8DC-38578-BA Saginaw power steering bracket: F5UE-19E708-BA Saginaw power steering pump: 214032S

This was a loaner bike that I rode around for about a week. It was very nice but it had torn storage cover from someone who abused it before me. Over all it's a nice bike.
My bracket number is F4TE-19E708-AA do you have any idea on this
Is the distance between the mounting holes on the Saginaw pump the same as the Ford pump?
What about 5.0 engine? Same brackets? 1995 Bronco.
Would that bracket & saginaw set-up also be compatible with an '89 F350 with a 7.3 ?
Any idea if the pulley offset is the same on the 4.9 as it is on the 5.0/5.8? My assumption is that they are the same but there isn't much info out there.
I have a 79 F150 with a big block 460. Presently, ford pump, if I order the bracket, pump and hoses, does it easily convert to Saginaw
Any suggestions of what fluid to use in a Saginaw TC? Not ATF due to friction modifiers? I just got an adapter bracket to swap the Ford pump out of my Ranger for a Saginaw TC "Type 2". Overhauling the whole front end of the motor. Should be fun. 👍
Hate to pick....but those numbers are engineering numbers and not a working part number. A good Ford parts man can cross them over to a working part number. Informative video.
If u use the right type F ATF fluid they are quiet as a mouse!
I have same problem with my 1986 bronco . To old to do myself . Thanks for sharing your adventure .
ua-cam.com/video/aQm34oCgSTk/v-deo.html Purging the air in the pump and system before you hook up the belt.
What’s the benefit of the f350 box?
In all my years of wrenching I have never seen or heard of a cracked or broken TRW (FORD) pump reservoir. They whine and are not as powerful as the Saginaw pump. Saginaw pumps can whine also depending on application. Thanks for the info on the brackets.
They don’t whine if u use the proper atf type F fuild
Will the 4.9 bracket fit a 5.8,5.0?
I found the bracket ,pump and A/C compressor from a 94 E150 302 for $35. Fit it on my 94 F250 with a 351. FIT PERFECT. The steering is better than new and no wine at all. Well worth the effort. I did have to get a larger belt. 103 inch.
Are the bracket and pump the same as a 302 and 351?
I know this is an older question, but for anyone in the future. The pump is the same, but the brackets are different. You need the brackets for your engine and belt setup. The 302 and 351 might be the same, but they're different than the 300/4.9. Also, they are different between the v-belt and the serpentine brackets.
Saginaw alittle quieter. Im getting use the the ford whine it's growing on me. Best thing to keep it quiet is flush system and use type f fluid
All you need is a saginaw pump
Is the pulley the same for both pumps?
Nope.
No. The Saginaw has a 0.75" snout / pulley hole. The C2 is 11/16" (0.6875")
Looking to convert my 1976 F-100 straight 6 4.9L engine to power steering would that bracket work on a 76 Ford 4.9L 300 engine
Would this also work with my 89 f150 4.9l 2x4 stick shift? I assume so since both are 4.9l just one is a bronco and mine is a f150.
Should work. The block is the same.
@@racersjunkyard1372 thanks for the quick reply. What tool did you use or recommend to remove the pulley from the ford power steering pump? thanks in advance.
Sorry I k ow you're probably way past this now. But just in case, I used a cheap-o pully removal tool from harbor freight. You can also rent one from any parts store.
Excellent video. Great visuals showing how the bolt up will work. I was looking at trying to swap one into my 92 F150 4.9 I’m currently changing a head gasket on (filming it as I go for UA-cam as a new hobby too). I found a 94 E250 in Houston and was thinking taking the 30 minute trip up to snag it. I know the vid is a few years old but wanted to say thanks for a great video.
Glad it helped
I've never had any luck with the Saginaw pumps on anything...I'm sticking with my ford pump. But you do give a damn good tutorial!
I have a 91 ranger xlt an my power steering pump wines bad. Can I put a Saginaw bracket an pump on it. An do I have to change hoses or will they fit.
I have a 89 f250 2x4 with the non ajustable steering box. Does ot mean i could get the ajustable one and all i need from a 4x4 97 f250?
The box should link up. But double check the spline count before you buy. There could be a difference between the 2wd and the 4wd boxes.
So if I have an 1986 E150 van with a 4.9 300 straight 6cyl, does that mean I already have a saginaw pump in there from factory?
Not necessarily. Ford changed up the pump depending on a bunch of different factors. The best way to be sure is to go look at your engine and check.
@@racersjunkyard1372 AWESOME! 😊👍 THANKS SO MUCH for the quick reply, I didn't know you'd even see this. I am going to make the drive up there and take a photo, the thing squeals each time I turn all the way left or right (not a belt slipping) and would love to put the best option in since I will be swapping it out anyway. Thanks so much for the reply!
Did you have to port Hydroboost
samuel Allen I did not. There are some aftermarket steering boxes that can be purchased pre ported.
Thank you for taking to time to explain the difference in the two parts. I am in the process of doing this on my 1994 Ford f-150. You took the guess work out of ordering the correct parts.
What engine -6 cylinder or 302-V8 Was your 1994 F 150. I see it was 6 yrs ago; so i do not know if you get this. I am working on a 302 ratrod (1966 ford Cabover)
Are you anywhere near San Antonio Texas? Tired of my 300 4.9L whine. Driving me crazy. Please DM me if around area. Need help with this swap. Thank you
Will this swap, work on an 85bronco and a similar year f350?
They didn't start the 4 bolt boxes until the late 90s. I'm running a 1999 F-350 box on my 94 Bronco.
@@arrogant444 how is working out for you?
Can I put the Saginaw pump in a ford bracket? Or I also need the Saginaw bracket?
If it's an original Saginaw pump off a e150-350 van and not one of the Cardone ones that are discontinued then yes. I was able to get the bracket, saginaw pump, tensioner, and hardware for the bracket for $80 on Ebay from a junkyard. Swap wasn't too bad and so worth it.
Why new tie rods?
fyi, the that e-150 bracket in your video is from a later van...maybe 94-96. The earlier sag brackets have the 4 mount holes on the bottom and the full hoop over the top. I got mine off a '92 van and I can say for sure the 4-hole mount style comes on that year. It all seems to be universally swappable on different years.
What's that hardware you put into the metal and what is the tool you use to do that?
I did this on my 91 4.9 f150 and it's F😊😊😊ing amazing! You have to get the right plum by using stacks of washers. Whole thing cost me 45 bucks didn't even have to buy a new power steering hose just twisted it around to the new hole. Hardest part is drilling the new holes in the pump holding bracket. Sounds like my truck isn't even running sometimes when I'm in traffic.
Murphy Toadster are you saying you did the pump swap but kept your original bracket? If so do you have pics?
Any problems with the power steering lines?
Ah since the Cardone 20-6244s are obsolete and nowhere to be found, what do you think about trying the Cardone 96-7054? Its apparently being manufactured new by Cardone for a '72 Mustang... got the right bolt pattern and about the same size and shape as a 20-6244... Yeah I'm working on a 2.5L pinto engine version too, mine's actually the Mazda B2500 rebrand (the door tag says Ford Motor Works though lol) Gotta say the bracket looks even easier to work on than the one for the larger engines, it's basically just an open crescent, still has the ribbing on the inside though, which would need to be ground down similarly. So whaddya think? Think a pump designed for a mustang would do the trick for a ranger? Gotta be better than those remans. I'm not doing the same freaking job 4 times just to find a good pump. The only hangup I can see is that the hose connections are different, both the connections on the 72' pump are male and I'm pretty sure the high pressure hose to the shitty ford remans is female. Hopefully I can find there's a hose out there that will work
have you ever tried a ranger conversion? I got the 2.5 what am I looking at as far as mods?
Depends on the mount. The ford and the saginaw pump have very different mounting patterns. Making an adapter out of metal could be done but attention would need to be paid to the spacing of the pulley for the belt. It's possible, but more simple on the 302/300/351 because pre existing factory brackets already exist. Not sure about the 2.5.
Check this out when you get a chance therangerstation.com
Was the Pitman arm that you later replaced from a f350 4x4? and If so was it the same length as the stock bronco's?
thanks from fsb
you should definitely get the 2.5 inch radiator core. Hills won't make you fret
Link to one you'd recommend?
..the pitman arm says f4x2
Yes it does. I've since swapped to a 4x4 pitman arm but they're about the same dimensions.
haha man.. i had the steering going left and right.. but try also changing the... umm.. damn what are they?? Tire cambers?
there are camber sleeves in the axle where the ball joints bolt up. Is that what you're talking about?
Yup

great video
great video
how did you get it?
nice! will you be posting more videos of the bike in action?
Yeah, I will once I get the appropriate camera.
