I worked in an iron foundry when I was sixteen, fifty years ago, and the conditions were worse than this. I only stayed about three months and couldn't wait to get out and on to construction sites but I worked with men of 45 years who had 65 year old lungs. Health and Safety was simply non existent and if you didn't keep your wits about you, you could get hurt. At the end of each shift a scaffold pole which held up the folding doors under the cupola and was attached to a chain had to be snatched away which was extremely dangerous because the partly melted metal would often jam and have to be manually dislodged with a metal rod.
