This year's suicide race. It takes 20 minuets for the riders to reach the top of the hill and about 2 minuets for them to get down. The race is about 1 mile long and includes several steep drops, a road crossing, and a river crossing before finishing in the Rodeo arena. This year's winner has won the race three years in a row. Held in Vale, OR on the Second day of the Vale 4th of July Rodeo.

This stuff is all great for true Americans that lived here for Christopher Columbus but what are they trying to do kill their horses this is not very fair for the horse a horse would not do this on its own

Looks like suicide for the poor horses they are not machines they are living breathing sentient beings used for human ego and entertainment this abuse no matter how "train ed they are sorry its abhorrant

agreed. pretty sad state of affairs when people get so bored they think this is cool. rumor has it that after they race down those hills a few times the riders speak in a very high voice for the rest of their lives - and they walk funny, sort of swishy, forever

Forcing animals like this is cruel and criminal. BTW, it's their footing NOT "there footing".

That is some of the craziest racing and fun to watch. Beats the heck out of the pale face races.

About Omak, but applies to all. www.paws.org/about/paws/history/omak/ Marketing gimmick or tradition? First run in 1935, the Suicide Race was the brainchild of Claire Pentz, publicity chairman for the Stampede, after failing to attract big crowds with boxing, trained zebras and stock car racing. Stampede organizers currently contend that the Suicide Race has roots in Native American tradition but in fact, an Anglo conceived the race as a publicity stunt. Race organizers claim it is a customary rite-of-passage. This can be negated by two facts: The races that used to occur among Native tribes of the area were longer-distance, cross-country races on horses bred to thrive on the hard, rocky, desert terrain of Eastern Washington. This is not comparable to flinging a long-legged thoroughbred or quarter horse down a 62-degree slope in the dark of night. A native rite-of-passage traditionally refers to a ritual or ceremony indicating the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Historically, Suicide Race rider's ages range from 18 to well into the 30's. Many have ridden in the race year after year seeking cash and popularity, not cultural fulfillment. Native American traditions teach respect not exploitation

Tbh the last horse and rider team was the best. Very impressive. I’m shocked they didn’t get first. He obviously cares a lot for his horse and they have a very deep bond. Incredible.

This is far from abuse, this is normal. Fuck running down a hill? That's abuse? I feel like you'd see a horse running down a hill in the wild and scream "ABUSE!" Honestly

I cried when he said he did it for his partner, because his partner is my cousin! Buddy is such an amazing son, father, and friend! He went through something so hard, and came out a better person for it, and I couldn't be more proud of him! I love you Buddy!

i agree with PendeltonWhiskey its cruel :/ its basically the same thing as dogfighting. forcing a horse to race to its death. would you like to be one of those horses? forced to run over unstable terrain to your death? i didnt think so.. so shut up and if you still don't think its cruel, go watch the Omak suicide race. if the horses aren't being raced to death, they're getting beat to death

this is sick and inhumane. how could anyone cheer for this? its not noble, its not courageous, its stupidity. thats all it is. stupidity. all they're doing is killing and injuring perfectly good and harmless horses. if anyone ever entered my horse in a suicide race, i'd slaughter 'em! honestly, im ashamed of the majority of mankind. this is not entertaining at all. its depressing. what'd horses ever do to y'all??

@@stormysocks if you think it's fine to endanger and kill horses for a silly spectator thrill sport you shouldn't have been allowed to own a horse in the first place. That poor pony was probably glad to be rid of you
