Exploring the Ludlow Massacre site, Ludlow, Colorado | Ghost town & Mining |
Join our adventure as we explore the Ludlow Memorial Monument in Ludlow Colorado. The monument marks the location of one of the deadliest labor conflicts in American history. Coal Miners who were growing increasingly frustrated by low wages, poor living conditions in company towns and incredibly dangerous working conditions in the underground coal mines called a strike in September of 1913. Tensions escalated with the deployment of the Colorado State Militia as well as patrols from Coal Company guards. On April 20, 1914 a deadly confrontation erupted between the two camps resulting in the loss of life of men, women and children. This was the beginning of the ten day war and a major event in the Colorado Coal Field War.

Didn't mother jones go to colorado before this and was there?
Mary Harris "Mother" Jones did indeed go to Colorado and helped organize the 1913-1914 strike. From information I found, she was arrested and served prison time . Prior to the Ludlow Massacre she was escorted from the state so I do not believe she was at Ludlow at the time of the events on April 20, 1914. Thank you for the comment and for watching our video. Please consider subscribing to our channel if you have not done so already... All the best... RDA
In retaliation for the massacre, miners attacked antiunion town officials, strikebreakers, and the mines, taking control of an area about 50 miles long and 5 miles wide. As many as 50 people died during the reaction to the Ludlow Massacre. Fearing a further escalation of violence, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson sent in federal troops to restore order. Unlike the National Guard, the federal troops were impartial and kept strikebreakers out of the coal mines. The strike ended on December 10, 1914. While the workers got little in the way of tangible benefits from their strike, the UMWA gained 4,000 new members.
The 10 days following Ludlow were some of the worst days of violence of the Colorado Coalfield war. The positive outcome from the investigation that followed was the 1915 report from the House committee on Mines and Mining. That report was instrumental in promoting child labor laws and the eight hour work day. Thank you for the thoughtful comment and for watching our video. All the best... RDA
Well that was about as generic as it can get 😢
The Colorado Coalfield war, of which the Ludlow massacre was a deadly component, was a very complex issue with lasting impacts to United States labor laws. My intent was to simply draw attention to this little known stop along the I-25 corridor and point out it's incredible significance. Thank you for leaving the comment and watching our video. Both are truly appreciated. All the best... Safe travels... RDA
So the Governor of Colorado, bought off by the wealthy mine owners got the National Guard to murder 15+ poor miners and their families who were on strike because the wealthy mine owners needed to mistreat their employees so they could have a bigger mansion than their neighbors. Who was punished for these murders? Obviously not the people who were in charge... Funny how things haven't changed...
Early coal mining with company towns and company stores definitely favored the coal companies. There truly was something to the song that stated "You owe your soul to the company store". From September 1913 to April 1914, there were plenty of clashes between the two factions, however, there was a total collapse of civility on April 20. In the video I included "408 strikers were arrested, 332 of whom were indicted for murder. Twenty-two National Guardsmen, including 10 officers, were court-martialed". This was the bulk of the prosecutions after the massacre. The positive slant to this entire negative event was the changing of labor laws as a direct result of the Ludlow massacre and the much larger Colorado Coalfield war. Thank you for watching our video and for leaving a comment. We truly appreciate it. Please consider subscribing if you have not already done so. Thanks again... all the best...RDA
'Ludlow' was the last name of the family in the 1994 movie 'Legends of the Fall'. I can't help but wonder if the writer took the name from this.
@@DuckGuy-1957 That I do not know. I usually try to include where the names originate, but I could not find the origin of the namesake for Ludlow. Thank you for watching our video and leaving the comment. Please consider subscribing to our channel if you have not done so already. All the best...RDA

My favorite part was the possible sighting of not just one, but possibly two, of my very favorite students! Could it be? And, yes, the stumps were pretty cool too! 😊
Very good observation skills you have there. YES... I have been fortunate to get Rock Doctor Son in two... count them... TWO of my videos. He is a very reluctant player, however, and says he is doing it just for his dad... I will take it! Rock Doctor Daughter is a natural and is appearing in more and more. She does a great job behind the camera as well as on camera. Look for both in upcoming videos. Oh... and yes, the stumps were pretty cool...RD
Great job Rock Doctor ! I wish National Geographic can see this as well as Environmental Science teachers so they can integrate this in their lesson. Thank you for sharing this 😊
Well, I don't think I am quite the same caliber as National Geographic, but thank you... Also, thank you for watching our video, subscribing and leaving this wonderful comment. We really do appreciate it. All the best... RD
The sheer volume of species that they have fossilized on display there is mind-blowing. The insects and spiders are particularly interesting to me. Another great adventure! Your videos always brighten my day, and I look forward to the next one.
Thank you. It really brightens my day you enjoy our adventures. It makes it all worthwhile for me. I agree, the fossil insects, fish, flowers and pollen are diverse and plentiful at Florissant. It seems the early collectors were mainly after the petrified wood and left a treasure trove of other fossils behind, lucky for us. I only showed a small amount of what is on display in the visitors center. It is well worth a visit if you are ever in the area. Until next time...RD
Those fossilized trees were so cool. I also couldn't believe that it has led to more little ones growing as well. I tried to imagine what it would have been like during those long lost eras, your video made it so informative. Another great video! Subscribed!
Thank you Logan. You are always so kind. I really appreciate the comments as they are exactly the fuel I need to keep going on this UA-cam journey. Perhaps after the Holidays a collab of some interesting site could be arranged...Think about it.

I'm very familiar with hoodoos having grown up near Bryce Canyon. It's really cool to see other places where they form.
Hoodoos are a very typical badland type of formation. Bryce Canyon is a great example as well as Wahweep Hoodoos and Goblin Valley in Utah. They make for very interesting photography. All the best... RD
I loved learning about the transcontinental railroad. The abandoned cemetery was interesting as well, sad for the 1 year old Lester buried there. Another great video!
Thank you. I agree about Lester. It is even a sadder story when you know his parents are buried together about 40 miles south in Fort Collins, Colorado. Poor Lester is all by himself at the Sherman cemetery. RD
I really enjoyed this episode. Thanks for the fun, informative, and entertaining video. Keep ‘em coming!
My favorite part was the cool formations with the different vibrant colors!
Thank you and you are welcome. They really are fun to make with the best part visiting all these places. Stay tuned as there are more videos coming soon. All the best my friend!
Mine too, as well as the graded bedding, the Castlerock conglomerate and the hoodoos. You can't forget the hoodoos. They were really cool.
I live near the town of Castle Rock, where the Castle Rock formation lies atop the Dawson Arkose sandstone. Where the Castle Rock formation is still in place, in large sheets around twenty feet thick, rainwater and snowmelt seeps down through cracks in the harder Castle Rock conglomerate. Where the water washes down to the Dawson sandstone below, is slowly carries away the easily eroded sandstone, and forms caves, right where the two formations touch. You can walk into the caves, which will have soft white sandstone walls and floor, but a ceiling made of harder, darker conglomerate. If you visit Castlewood Canyon State Park, you'll find a number of these cave-like rock shelters, just twenty feet below the crest of the canyon walls. One of these caves is located in a new open space park on the edge of Castle Rock, known as Lost Canyon. It's been excavated by archaeologists, who found evidence of several native cultures who used the cave over time, including a cache of mocassins made from yucca fiber. It's known as Franktown cave. The city only recently purchased the Lost Canyon ranch, and the open space is not yet open to the public. I suspect they'll want to secure the cave to keep the public out before it opens. At my house, the Castle rock formation eroded away long ago, so our surface is Dawson Arkose sandstone (or the sand that is left when it erodes.) The Dawson formation is much thicker than the Castle Rock formation. The Dawson continues for several hundred feet below our land surface. We walk on the Dawson formation and we also drink out of it! Our water well goes two hundred feet down into the Dawson. So we have a two-hundred foot thick coarse (and in some layers fine) sand filter to clean the rainwater and snowmelt before we drink it. Dawson water tastes great, but it leaves a ring in the toilets!
Wow! That's really interesting.
Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. We truly appreciate the support. If you have not already, please consider subscribing to our channel. We have a lot more videos coming of our adventures. All the best, RD
I thought so too. I didn't know much about this before but it was so cool to learn about!

My brother was just stationed in co springs. The weird thing about space force is that they aren't the ones getting sent into space. That somehow, and I'm not joking at all here, falls to the army. The army will do the space fighting.... I always figured it'd be space marines, but no.
I hope your brother enjoys Colorado Springs. There is a huge military footprint there, as you know, as well as an area rich in year round outdoor activities. @RockDoctorAdventures to clarify, he WAS stationed there. He just moved to vegas to be a recruiter where our parents are. Unfortunately, most of his time with that unit was spent in korea anyways so he only spent a few months there in Co Springs itself. It is stunning though.
@@nuggdimmadome2192 Vegas is quite the change from The Springs climate wise, but, it sounds like you are very familiar with the area if your parents live there. Trading mountains and plains for heat and a mountain, both have their fascinating histories.
@RockDoctorAdventures we come from a military family dating back to before the war for independence. It was really cool revisiting places from your dad's past. I will always hold a special place in my heart for the brothers and sisters who fought the good fight.

In the mid 70s I traveled to Teec Nos Pos to visit a old school friend who was an Arizona Highway Patrolman stationed there. We drove to the 4 Corners Monument and at that time there were no buildings there, just the small monument in what was like a traffic circle and nothing else. Before we left, we drove in the circle around the monument several times so we could say we drove in 4 states in a matter of less than a minute.
Very similar to the first time I visited the location. There was nothing there except for the disk in the ground marking the four corner spot. There was also no entry fee for viewing the site. They charge to enter now. By the way, Tec Nos Pos really hasn't changed much since the last time you were there in the 70's. The monument... Yes...Tec Nos Pos... Not so much. Great video! I love learning about the native tribes of these areas. I was curious as to the term CE for dating the pueblo site, what does it stand for and when is it used? Itraveled to Durango and Silverton in my teens with my family. I remember the beautiful mountains and the road down into Silverton was REALLY steep and winding. We also ate at a BBQ restaurant in Silverton that had been in Guy Fiere's show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I'd love to visit Colorado again to experience some of these other places.
Great question. The terms CE and BCE stand for Common Era and Before Common Era. They have been in use since the 17th century and are used interchangeably with BC and AD. No preference for either as I can tell. Some scholarly writings use the BC/AD abbv. while others use the CE/BCE. Durango and Silverton are spectacular locations. There is a lot of history surrounding both of those place. Ouray and Cortez are close by as are a number of National Parks and Monuments. Long weekend trips might be in your future 😁. All the best and thank you for watching and leaving comments on our videos. We truly appreciate it.
Another fun, interesting, and informative video! So fun to see your wonderful daughter and my awesome former student in the video! Keep it up!
Thanks and Thanks for watching. I passed your comment on to your former student who smiled from ear to ear. I think she likes being in the videos so I will include her more often. Rock Doctor son... not so much. He will only be seen in fleeting moments caught randomly on camera. As always, thank you for your support on UA-cam and Twitter. I really appreciate all the shout-outs. Spread the word about the channel so we can get the sub numbers up. 😁 Please. All the best...
I really love your videos! Great production quality, fun stories and beautiful locations. It's awesome you get to get out there with your family and get to really see the country. Stay safe and watch out for bees, dude! 37 times is enough for several lifetimes. Looking forward to your next adventure!
Wow, thank you for the wonderful comments. They are truly appreciated. The memories of the bees and rattlesnakes are still very vivid in my mind, it was quite the day and documented in the fieldnotes of the USGS. There were bees everywhere. Up and to that point I never knew bees made hives out of fallen pine needles on the ground. Boy were they ever mad at me for stepping all over their nest. That's what I get for just looking at the rocks!🙄. Thanks again for watching the video.
@RockDoctorAdventures I didn't know they did that either! New fear unlocked. Out here in az I grew up with Africanized bees and those things will chase you for miles so I try to steer clear of all bees just out of habit.
I hear ya... Once they get your pheromone scent, you are the target! I ran into a swarm near Salome, AZ... got out to film and returned to the car immediately. They can hang on to the car at 65mph, at least for a little while. Bees are quite amazing.
Other historic buildings include Yesterday's Restaurant, Shep's Miners Inn, the historic Baptist church, a home now preserved as a museum, twin miner's homes, the surviving bank vault of one of the original banks, and the mine payroll office (which is currently awaiting restoration). The townsite of Chloride has a Chamber of Commerce website where you can learn more before you visit. Locals will greet you on the street and send you to the Market for a free map of town.

Hello Rock Doctor Adventures, hope you are well. I also follow you on UA-cam. Your videos are amazing but your channel is not perfectly SEO. So, due to lack of SEO your videos don't reach to target audience and don't rank on UA-cam. That's why your Videos do not get much audience, views, likes and comments which limits your channel growth. Without SEO any channel don't grow organically. so you should SEO your videos. Hope you have understood what I said. Have a nice day. you can make m,e work if you want Thanks
@@mrbeas4-j3b thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel. We sincerely appreciate it. We continue to work on our SEO to appease the algorithm. It continues to be a work in progress.

The Dino prints are so cool! Both boys thought so too :) Beautiful highlight of the Navajo code talkers
@@noeldominick2697 Thank you. I am happy you and the kids enjoyed it. The Dino tracks are worth the trip...there are hundreds of them and you can get up close and walk where they walked. The small Code Talker museum at Kayenta is definitely worth the stop. There is more than what I showed. Incredible stop. Thanks for watching the video. Please consider subscribing so you don't miss any future videos.
Thanks for the tips on hidration.
@@charleshussey4486 You're welcome and thank you for watching our video. We truly appreciate it. Hydration is critical. When you think you have had enough water...drink some more. When they left they burned everything to the ground as a final "f-you" because of the back taxes. It truly was an oasis, the variety of produce they grew was impressive even by modern standards.Thats why there are only foundations. Not that it would have mattered as you can see the wooden rubble deteriorated under the water as well.
I can only imagine the range of emotions these people felt as they were packing their worldly possessions under the threat of rising lake waters. I am eagerly awaiting cooler temperatures to return to the area so we may explore the other half of the trail loop. Thank you for watching the video and leaving the comment. I truly appreciate it. Stay tuned for a part 2 of St. Thomas this fall. All the best.
