Taking 20 Podcast Episode 244 - Guard the Fun
There’s a lot to playing and DMing a tabletop RPG. There are quite a few rules, a story the DM is trying to create for the players, encounters to design, sessions to plan, characters to role play and so much to do to ensure the game can happen. However, don’t lose sight that the game is supposed to be, first and foremost, fun.

As to your last, batshit suggestion: the Ironsworn family of games actually has a game mechanic for resolving a fight in a single roll. It ain't that crazy!

@ you are correct - a rather astounding number are out there, but at this point with more than two and a half thousand videos collected, it’s really slowing down - there are days that go by without finding new videos and sometimes a week within a new one - so it’s great to find a collection of talks like yours that include house rules for multiple different systems and use cases - many thanks 🙏🏿
hello im listening from Maryland, and could you do an episode on how to keep control on a game with unruly players and or one on aberrations?
Oh and ps, please keep me anonymous
I'm sorry for the delayed response. Those are two good topics. Any particular aberrations you're interested in? I've done one on Mind Flayers (ep 49) and Beholders (ep 64). I'll slot in an unruly players episode. Thank you for listening and commenting!
Vital info for DMs old and new!
Thank you so much for listening!
Love CoF Dave has done something really special.
Yes he has! I can't wait to hear how the stories unfold!
Crucible of Fate, a game where people have to fight for the right to destroy the Material Plane. But also, where people bond, friendships are made, and tears are shed. It's an incredible space.
Every episode gets better and better. ...and that's a fact! (Thud thud thud) General Bludblud (ep4) enters with a peg leg limp and straightens up despite his hunchback. "Do yerself a favor..." His voice is rough, his half-orc accent thick. "Watch Crucible of fate. It will rock your world!"
The mix between D&D and collaborative storytelling, plus the highlight on player versus player interaction, is a true talent as a DM! I listened to CoF as a viewer first, and then curiosity got the best of me and I applied to play! Honestly one of the best games I've had an opportunity to play. Glad to get this perspective half way through Round One!
Wow! You exceeded my expectations. Thanks for the research you did that went into this episode - valuable in-game and out! And I like your conclusion for GM's to make the best ruling they can based on the ruleset, and that it's OK for your players to respectfully make their point so long as they also respect the GM's final call so the game can move on. And great advice that you can always continue the discussion out of game and between sessions, and make house rules to suit your players and your game. Regarding the topic, this really helped me to refocus on keeping things simple in relation to how fire works in-game, and a timely reminder that the game world is not the real world. Well played! 👏
@Adrian Young I am so glad that you enjoyed the episode. It made me take a step back and look at a lot of my house rules and custom game system mechanics in a new light. I greatly appreciate your topic suggestion and keep them coming! Thanks for listening!
It is absolutely your choice to "wait and see" but I think that you will be left behind in the exodus. As a neutral observer who has never played TTRPG and only has an interest through CRPG's I have found this entire debacle very interesting, saddening and rather predictable. Current execs at WotC (from backgrounds such as Microsoft and Amazon) are used to dictating terms to their customers due to effective market monopolies and they are trying to do this in an arena where although they are by far the biggest player they are by no means the only one. Not only that but the foundation on which their company is based has been declared as "open" by the OGL and they cannot claim exclusive rights to the game system itself. They are simply trying to strongarm third parties into giving them more power and more money. The writing is on the wall for the OGL as even if WotC row back a bit this time their intended future course is now totally clear to all concerned. It is only a matter of time before they think that the dust has settled and they can have another go, maybe by a more stealthy approach. In the meantime, as they say in politics, when the herd moves it moves! There is currently a mad scramble to break away from all things WotC and I think that the reason more people have not unsubscribed from the D&D Beyond platform so far (apart from the website 'hiding' the unsubscribe button!) is that they need to export their content first and may be looking for a suitable alternative. Although a number of creators have declared their intention to produce their own license structures I suspect that in the end they will all sign on to the ORC license being set up by Paizo. This episode has been the catalyst for a tectonic shift in the fantasy RPG world as it now had the impetus to break away from the controlling influence of WotC. Much like computing arena where Open Standards, Open Software and now, with RISC-V, Open Hardware give people the opportunity to dump the established monopolies the end result will only be better for the fantasy RPG community as a whole.
@spacedock8 You are absolutely correct and thank you for listening and for the comment! This is a greedy money grab from Hasbro who, I believe, are grossly overestimating their ability to strong-arm 3rd party publishers. I think the ORC license will be the default license going forward and I commend @Paizo and others for getting that process moving. What I find disappointing is that success was tantalizingly close for WOTC. All they had to do is set up D&D Beyond as the "Steam" of tabletop role playing: Make it easy to publish 3rd party content on the platform, make it easy for DMs to integrate these rules, modules, icons, etc. into their tabletop games, take a 30% cut of all of the sales and then lay back and let the money come in. Instead they got greedy and I think they will regret it before it's all said and done. Someone else commented it easily could have been an attempt to "pump and dump" by the management to recover the stock price and then get out with their golden parachutes intact, leaving their replacements to deal with the fallout but they didn't count on a bunch of people (myself included) who are used to scouring text to find correct interpretation. It's what we do.
Hey, I just wanted to say that I just discovered your contend. You are damn good at this, so I hope that you catch on, if you haven't already on other platforms.
Thank you for listening and for the kind words Joe! Let me know if there's a topic you'd like covered!
I really enjoyed this episode, and some great advice. I have always wanted to try and GM at a con but never made the time nor summoned up the courage I guess. There was so much gold in this podcast. I particularly liked your advice on having pregens (critical) and GMs not cramming too much into the session (KISS). I've played in a number of convention games where the latter was particularly telling, and pretty much the 5min warning from the organisers came up and then the GM pretty much just narrates/wraps up everything, which is very unfulfilling. The number of players is also key. If there are more than 4 player spots available I generally don't sign up because 5-6 players is just too many to give everyone a go and get everything done. Also great to hear the surgery went well and you are on the mend. Cheers
Thank you so much for the kind words! I will admit I was so nervous about the first game I ran at a con and SEVERELY overprepared. I had waytoo much content for the 4 hour time slot and had to end it on a cliffhanger. Now I treat cons like running games at the local game store, just with a lot more people around. And you are absolutely right, a crowded table at a convention can be extremely difficult to enjoy. Happy gaming!
Ayyy, glad to see this with the correct audio now. Looking forward to this one since our campaign has had a little bit of this from our magus and monk collecting trophies from impressive fights.
Thanks for letting me know and sorry about the audio error on the previous version. Thanks for listening!
Damn, I want the experience points and some of that roast pork shoulder too.
IKR. I don't want my cake and eat it too but I do want my pork shoulder and some XP on the side!
I've been greatly enjoying the degrees of success for pf2e in the campaign I'm in. It took a couple sessions to get used to, but it just makes sense now. And the +10/-10 for actual crits just seems natural (no pun intended). The lizard part of my brain just really likes seeing all the dice fly when my rogue gets a crit, cause its not just weapon crit effects, its property rune effects too. Clicker-clack go the dice, snicker-snack go the enemies.
I like that part of the game system as well. I had the same experience. It was clunky at first but once you get used to it, it really adds to the game. Thank you for listening!
you didn't go too far into pf2e so wanted to add that pf2e has the vaulentary flaw system. where you take tow ability flaws and get a free ability boost to customize your character even more. I also wouldn't say that the races in 5e are cosmetic, they still get their racial abilities(gnome's magic resistance, halfling's luck, and so on) I haven't played 5e much but when I heard tasha aome out, I became worried that the customization would break the game even more allowing for more power builds and frustrating gms at even earlier levels. no clue how it's been going since then.
That's a good point about the voluntary flaw system. Also, you're correct in that 5e races still have unique abilities here and there. Thank you for the feedback and thank you for listening!
The summoner in out current pf2e game has been absolutely game changing in a bunch of fights so far. Having extra action economy on demand in addition to another body on the field? 👌
Absolutely. My druid has been summoning elementals while another character has a wolf animal companion. Those extra actions have been great for flanking and have made some tough fights easier to win.
Didn't get a chance to comment on the last video cause I was on vacation when I watched it, but personally, I have no issues with the episodes going over 20 minutes.
Thank you for the feedback! Hope you have a great week!
Damn that’s some tough love growing up!🔥As someone wiser than me once said ‘Never let religion get in the way of a good story’… and yes, oh how the RPG worm has turned 🎲 … ok, if I could have my time again, I’d have kept all my early RPGs and Dragon magazines 😓 … ah, the frivolity of youth
I'm just glad that so many of those resources have started to show up online. There are great ideas for adventures and creatures even if it's written for AD&D.
Darkest Dungeon is one of the meanest games ever, and Wayne June has the best voice, pretty much bar none.

@@thetaking20podcast61 I'm in the middle of listening to older episodes so forgive me if you've already covered this. As a new DM, probably my biggest issue is being the ring leader. Does the DM share the sole responsibility of gathering the group for a session? The DM runs the game but assuming the players WANT to play the game as well, shouldn't they be equally responsible in making a session happen? I just feel that players think that the DM is in charge in all aspects, in and out of the game. Maybe it's not really an issue out there but there's mine. Great podcast! Consider me a fan. Clear and well spoken.
@@DJStrawberry Good topic. I'll add that to my future episode list!
