    I'm in the Seattle area too. My daughter gave me this plane for Mother's Day. I brought it in late October and have it on my dining room table with east sun shining in some days. The flowers are starting to fall off now. Should I move it to a cooler room. My thermostat is set at 68. When do I trim it? IT has grown a lit since I got it and flowered all summer on my deck on West side. I live it and want to make sure I can save it.

      I am moving mine into my shed (that has windows) now, so that it avoids the hard freezes of winter. I did have one last year that I kept in my living space (room temp), but I find that in a garage, shed, etc. works great. I will save most of my pruning for late winter, but I have a couple that have grown large, so I will trim these back so that they fit in the shed space that I have for them. Over the winter, they will lose a few leaves periodically, but overall, they just go dormant. Every 6 to 8 weeks, I might also put some water in them to ensure they don't dry out.

    Does the blue tape, when removed, cause a void between the latex mold and mother mold, which the conrete pushes the latex into and so the end product is slightly (slightly!) bigger, but crucially it has less definition than the original? Or do the copies look identical?

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy 11 днів тому

      There likely is some slight difference, but it has never been noticeable. In fact, I am sure under a microscope, that there would be several differences and no two statues exactly alike. Also, there are others who use other methods like a PVA primer, so if there is a concern, perhaps research that method more. Thanks for watching!

    I went to an orchard here in Wisconsin last year to get northern spy apples, was eating one while reading their website. I noted that they had Pippin apples, so I went back inside store to ask about them. "Oh we have some, but not out, can bring a box out" Holy moly the Pippins were huge. Billed at 40ozers. Years ago drank Cox Pippin apple juice in England which was very tasty. So my daughter and I bought 2. I shared mine w/a friend and thought it pretty tasty too. Didnt know Wolf got that huge too. Went to same orchard this year, their Wolf apples not nearly that big.

    I was told and might be wrong but that wolf river is one of the few varieties of apples that will grow in to the same true variety from seed, as its a self pollinator, and thus also pollinates other trees, on the other trees you may get the wolf river cross, but on the wolf river tree its very likely to not cross pollinate, unless you force it by removing the pollen anther and stamen part of the blossom, and use a blossom from another tree, but that is like lab work.

    • @backyardadventureswithandy

      I have not in the statues I have made and never had an issue. The latex pops off of things like shiny ceramic or plastic much easier than concrete, but sometimes it causes lifting or bubbling if it doesn't stick as well. I prefer no mold release.

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy Місяць тому

      The rootstock can be quite a variety of different apples, but the "pro" growers/sellers that make these choose a variety that helps with better size, etc. That is why you can have a dwarf or a full-size tree growing the same apple varieties. And, you can choose a type of apple tree you already like and graft new types onto it.

    I just watched all 3 of this series of videos & wanted to say thank you so much for sharing your incredible knowledge. You did a wonderful job explaining all your steps & reasoning behind those steps. I am so glad your video (#1) popped up in my search regarding mold-making. My current search was admittedly for knowledge about resin, but I also have an interest in casting concrete. But the reason I am so glad & grateful to have seen your videos is that I am also a reborn doll artist (painting blank vinyl baby doll kits), & have been thinking about trying to sculpt & cast a doll in silicone. If you are familiar (or just look them up online) you’ll see that these silicone baby dolls sell for a few thousand dollars each. So collectors really enjoy them, but I don’t want to waste my time & resources putting out shoddy work. I’ve done lots of investigating over the last few years, but info is very scarce so far. Your videos really helped me to understand the process of making the mother mold (albeit, mine would be for silicone rather than concrete - at least if I produce a doll. LOL- I don’t think there’s much of a market for a concrete reborn doll! 😄) Regardless, like I mention before, I’m also interested in concrete, resin & silicone, so your videos provided invaluable help to a “jack-of-all-trades” type of artist like myself! I just wanted to say thanks so much for making these videos! I am grateful to you for sharing your expertise!

Also, I have found that my leaves are really rich green when shaded, but sometimes there are less flowers with more shade. For example, the varieties I had in more sun has way more flowers than the ones in the shade.

    I have a 36 inch tall garden statue that was my grandmothers and a lot of us are “fighting” over it. I wonder if I can do this with the statue. It’s a st Francis garden statue do you think it’s possible?

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy Місяць тому

      That is totally possible, as that is how most of the garden art is made. It's a pretty large piece, so that is a lot to start your first statue with, but it is possible and seems like a good one to try!

    Great video. Would it have been harder or easier if you wanted longer before taking the shell and mold off? In other words, do you want the concrete softer or harder when you take everything off?

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy Місяць тому

      If you leave a mold on "too long," the hardness can be a challenge for cleaning the seams and seems to affect the mold, however, I have shifted for some of my statues to give them an extra day of curing. The outside temperature and humidity also affects this, so I leave them longer in the winter than I do in the summer.

    This is great instruction for what you’re doing, but with all due respect this is a guide to copying garden art, not making garden art. If step one is “get the statue…”, it’s not a start-to-finish guide on making a statue.

      @backyardadventureswithandy Місяць тому

      I hear you and would agree that there is a whole other step you can take with making your own item from scratch. For generations, I've heard that most of the garden statues have been duplicated items of other duplicated items for concrete work. Perhaps a better title would include duplicating an item to make a garden statue?

Please, advise on weathering I should use the lye container for anything other than lye mixing, is it best to use one bowl all the time for lye mixing? How bout the utensils, are they safe to use after washing for regular cooking? Sorry so many questions, imnew❤

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching. I'll share what I have experienced, but I am not an expert. I will pre-measure my lye in a small bowl (glass) while in a dry state (without water, etc.). When I am ready to mix it, I use a large bowl/pan that can withstand hot temperatures with a quick rise in temperature from the chemical reaction. In my case, this has been a ceramic covered metal pot from a crockpot. I've used it for years, and it is easy to clean and seems effective. Part of my reasoning is that the thick sides also help cool the mixed lye mixture so I do not have to wait as long to mix my soap. Also, as for utensils, I have washed my utensils afterwards and am comfortable using them again in my kitchen, but best practice is to use soap making utensils for soap, as lye can be dangerous if ingested. I usually extra wash things I also use for cooking, and again, I personally am comfortable with it.

    How would you do this but with a cutout on the bottom instead of it being completely flat? For example, I want to make one that has a groove to run water hose through so I can put it over the hose line. Or if I wanted to make a hollow section to hide spare keys. etc...

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy Місяць тому

      The flat part, where you pour your concrete, can be altered to have a cavity for keys or just to make it lighter. Once, I put a bolt through it and sticking out so someone could chain it to something. AS for the house, probably take a pipe or something to create the gap for the hose would work. Good idea as a way to hold a hose or drip line down.

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy 2 місяці тому

      I use the common concrete mix from my local hardware store, and it says "high strength" on it. It works well without anything extra added to it, however, I got spooked a couple years back after reading recommendations to add extra cement to the mix, and so I usually put a few cups of cement to my mix. It seems to be the same. There are stronger mixes sold, but I have not used those.

    It’s quite interesting that you’re planning yours next to your house. I’m considering moving ours from next to the house to away from the house because in Northern California. All the insurance companies are starting to require a 4 to 5 foot no plant zone around the houses.

    • @backyardadventureswithandy
      @backyardadventureswithandy 2 місяці тому

      As a general rule, you do not want plants touching a structure, so there is wisdom in that. Is the N. Cal thing for fire safety, bugs, or something else? That seems strange to have no plants in beds near the house. I would suggest keeping things 1 foot from the house, but I don't know your area's situation. By the way, mine is thriving where it is at, and I need to prune each year to keep it the right size and from growing into touching my house. Thanks for watching!

      @@backyardadventureswithandy It is safety. The Dixie fire destroyed our town of Greenville, California in 2021. Luckily, we didn’t burn, but they did start backfires on our property that probably saved our home and barn. Not having the ability to have nice looking plants growing up against or near the house bums me out, but I understand why. Since I posted that yesterday, I discussed moving the Rose of Sharon to another spot and my wife agreed. We are on 6 acres of Ponderosa Pines, Cedars, a couple kinds of firs, and oaks. at the 3600 foot elevation, the Rose of Sharon provides a little bit of semi tropical oasis.
