When my passion for cricket really took off, about 1964/5, when I was 14/15, Geoffrey was opening for England, wearing glasses, and the Radio 3 commentary was addictive. The tone and expert, mellow way that dear John Arlott improved my love of cricket, is immeasurable. His descriptive way of getting across to the listener what he could see in front of him, was wonderful. Describing Joel Garners smile as being akin to a slice of melon and the famous streaker as ‘and it’s masculine, and it’s seen the last of its cricket today’,’ or words to that affect, will stay in my mind forever. Quintessentially English, and him and Johners, Blowers and EW Swanton doing the session summary, were addictive to me. The nearest to these icons since those days, would be dear Richie. It’s not until I reflect on those days and the number of matches I’ve followed over the last 60 odd years, that I realise how much I miss John and his colleagues in the commentary box. Even John’s interviews regarding his love of wine, were compulsive listening. If there’s a special afterlife where there’s this game of cricket being played, I hope I end up there and I hope John is doing the commentary.

At least he js not leaving TMS completely. As an Irish cricket fan in my mid sixties TMS is a fantastic programme which has given me some great moments over the years.

Agnew is the voice of cricket for me, I can't imagine TMS without him. fronting the show because he's been there ever since I started following the game so long ago. Glad he's sticking around for a bit longer as a commentator and wish him all the best. Thanks for posting 👍
