"Best job I ever had!"

I remember watching my dad build this kit in 1971. He was based in Hong Kong and was at home watching my brother and me as mum was very sick and bed bound. He wasn't a modeller, only building this for something to do. No paint! He gave it to me as a toy, and I was fascinated that this bunch of bits could become this model. This kit inspired me, some two years later at 8 years old to start building models.

You've positioned the hockeystick aerials upside down.

I'm sure the C47 was the Dakota, and not the Sky Train it's civil equivalent, which was designated the DC3. I remember making this Airfix kit as the Vietnam War AC47 back in 1977. It cost 75p at the time.

Ok, I acknowledge the cost difference and the age of the molding. My advice to anyone contemplating this kit, unless you are prepared to replace all the guns, masts, propellers etc and purchase the deck lockers, ladders, anchors with three d printed parts and the PE set, save your time and your money and don’t bother with this kit. Trumpeter make a far more accurate and detailed kit for both 1931 and 1941 configurations in 1/700 scale that will cost less than the Airfix option mentioned above. The nicest kit of the Hood I’ve built is the 1/350 scale 1941 version with 3d print weapons, deck accessories, bollards, fairleads and hatches, lifeboats and with all the wooden decking and the (I think) 12 sheet photo etch set. I liked it enough to purchase a second model of it with all the appropriate extras and converted it to the Hood in 1931 with the catapault and Fairey IIId floatplane at the stern. Quite expensive but, to my mind, very reasonable examples of the Hood in 1931 and 1941. Not game to take on the 1/200 scale of it for reasons of cost and nowhere to put it. Oh yes, and please, regardless of which kit you buy, check the HMS HOOD Association website. The Hoods lower hull was NEVER painted hull red at any time. It was painted in dark grey, darker than the upper hull and the superstructure, the two shades of grey separated by quite a thick black boot line (6 or 8 feet from memory.)😊 Happy modeling.

Nice little kit. Good looking quick build. Just one point, on the Mk.I the fuselage behind the seat and ahead of the instrument panel is in aluminium paint and the wheel wells will either be aluminium paint or the underwing colour.

Very good video. I always thought that those Matcbox military kits with diorama bases were excellent value for money, and the best way to encourage a beginner.

Excellent kit, nice video. For the older ones, it's just a revival of an old "matchbox" (like all 1/76 boxes with a small diorama) new decals, but still as interesting. Good luck with your channel 😉👍

Love this model build I'm just building this model as I write this post as well as 2 other RN ships " HMS Belfast 1/700 scale & HMS Victorious 1/600 scale .

Enjoyed watching you make and paint this model. Just one niggle (for me anyway) is that it is real ones, from what I remember, are green with white stripes as opposed to your white with green stripes. Good work and good model though.

Thanks for this! I'm just about to do my Cromwell and this was very helpful. I am not looking forward to that decal on the roof! (I even considered trying to paint it on instead!) Also, great to see an alternative accessories pack, most of the upgrade parts I'd found are for the Revell 1/72 Cromwell rather than the Airfix one. Look forward to watching more of your videos. Nicely done! Yeah this classic Hood kit has a whole load of fit problems, and it's certainly a challenging but enjoyable 'first ship' to build. It was also my 'first ship' when I was a boy, and has been a personal favourite ever since. I probably had it built and painted in just a few hours, and though it was doubtless pretty rough that build still stands out in my memory for the pride I felt at the time. I've built a few more since, the most recent featuring major corrective surgery based on the 'Anatomy of The Ship' information, with White Ensign etched brass. This is a kit that can look stunning with the investment of painstaking refinement, yet also looks suprisingly impressive straight out of the box (as you have so capably shown). The Hood was such an elegant and iconic ship that you can't really lose!! Congratulations, display your HMS Hood with pride!

Hello from Canada. I just discovered your sight and I’m excited that for once someone is building 1/600 airfix contribution of England’s flagship models. Hood was one of my favourite models and the constant scale gave me a satisfied fleet. The main reason I’m calling on you is to render my experience in constructing the hulls of airfix. What I would do is fit the drift thes decks and hull haves together and then hold them together by way of rubber bands and then apply the cement along the halves, using tube cement which after it set filled the open parts. I would once I cemented the bow, I would use a clothes pin to hold the bow, then I would repeat the pinning with clothes pins. The hull wasn’t a problem then. If you do another airfix ship, I suggest you try this procedure. Ta ta for now. Alex

I recommend to join both parts of the hull putting in place with masking tape, and you have not to cement all the joint at the first strike...but doing for short lines and then after cement a small area you can handle more accurate
