Brother Barnabe - Axel Krogness
Brother Barnabe is the fourth track from Axel's second album of guitar music: A Clear Midnight.

This album explores the medieval story about the juggler Barnabe of Campeigne and how this entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery. He is suspected of blasphemy after juggling in front of the Holy Virgin’s altar, but he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life.
The album is named after Walt Whitmans poem A Clear Midnight and one piece is also dedicated to the composer Frank Martin.
The rest of the album explores using new tunings, the sextuplet tremolo, a palindrome (the 8th piece can be played backwards or forwards and still sound the same) and just impressions from the world we live in from my own perspective.

@@axelkrogness Pleasure. From a guitarist's point of view, how is this piece to play? Tippett didn't have experience with the instrument, and most of what he composed is pretty demanding on instrumental players of all shapes and sizes! I don't know how much Julian Bream advised him on scoring for guitar...
@@simonbarrowuk I think the whole work is demanding to play but it is at the same time very well written for the instrument. The second movement, juggling, has some very uncomfortable technical places but they are less obvious I think. The hard parts sounds easier to play and the easier parts sounds more complicated. Tippett use much of the composed material several times in different keys and when all of those are discovered (or many of them at least) and the left and right hand fingering are imitated too in the modulations then that makes it easier to remember and perform it. I also prefer to play Juggling as a second movement and I think it contributes to create a more mysterious last movement of dreaming with the F# being one of the last notes and also one of the first notes in the first movement Transforming
