Ram introduced to ewes and breeding season begins

Does showing weakness make you a less effective leader?

On my regular Tuesday morning sunrise watch, I ponder if weakness makes you a less effective leader. I used to think so and led my company showing no weakness. Now that I no longer own that company, I wonder if I was right?

Vaccinate, deworm, trim feet and weigh lambs as sole operator
Переглядів 515 місяців тому
Using Lakeland Aluminum Easy Panels and Spin Chute set up against the barn allows me to process lambs as a sole operator in the shade AND using less panels. I can vaccinate, deworm (after checking FAMACHA), trim hooves if needed, and weigh all the lambs pretty quickly and with nearly no stress to the flock. If you want to see it in action check out this short - ua-cam.com/users/shortsRWsJ4SeJbl...

    It's a serious magnesium deficiency, or stress from the lamb's death... She seemed to be in either mourning or physical shock. Try petting her head and being around her, it takes them a few days to recover from mourning. If she's still behaving the same, it's likely physical illness or magnesium deficiency because of providing milk to her lambs.

      @RetreatLearn 4 місяці тому

      It wasn't her lamb that died. That one was a rejected one from another ewe who didn't even notice the lamb had died unfortunately. Apples babies are doing fine. I agree it's likely due to some stress from nursing twins as just a yearling - I much prefer they have one their first year. She showed signs of barber pole parasites so I treated her for that and she is doing better. Still not out of the woods but much better.

    Sheep are actually smart if they're in an environment of trust... They recognize their names and people. They're also quite in tune emotionally just like dogs, they can sense when your up or down and they adjust immediately. Bottled fed lambs raised as outdoor pets are almost dog level iq. Shocked you wouldn't see their smart and quirky side as a farmer, maybe you aren't close enough to them to see that side. Bottle fed lambs as outdoor pets can even be potty trained for number two. I guess sheep milk farmers get to see a whole different side of them because you keep them for so much longer than when it's for wool and meat.

    • @RetreatLearn
      @RetreatLearn 7 місяців тому

      agree. My flock trusts me but if I go into the pasture with someone they don't know they will be very cautious even around me and the "stranger". There are definitely different personalities among each one of them and I can usually recognize which ewe it is from across the field just based on how they hold themselves.

    Could we get a tour of your sheep barn. How do you put them up at night? Does the ram always stay with them? Do you feed grain?

    • @RetreatLearn
      @RetreatLearn Рік тому

      Lots of great questions! I will do a tour video soon. My barn is simple. For the most part they stay outside. I purchase a new ram each fall and run him with them until they start birthing and then sell him. I buy a good ram because he is half my genetics and also because he will be easy to sell if he is a good ram. I feed grain in the month before and after birth to prevent ketosis and have strong vibrant babies at birth but the rest of the time they are grass fed. I don't put them up at night. However, during lambing season I contain them in a smaller area so it is easier to check on them at night.

    • @RetreatLearn

      Those are both nice breeds. You will get a lot of opinions on this but to me.. the Katahdins are a mix already of the St. Croix and they bred the best parts of St Croix (parasite resistence and hardy feet) into a breed that also had a meatier carcass so I would not want to mix in the smaller carcass again.
