    Really nice use of those field recordings and great tutorial! That idea splitting the velocities is really interesting, never thought to do that. One of the things I particularly like with using this sort of foley is you get little artefacts from the surroundings. For example, I was at the park with my son and there was a vibraphone for the kids to use. I recorded each of the notes several times and have turned it into an instrument rack. But for each note there is a little bit of background noise of kids playing, leaves rustling etc which aren't too audible but add a lot of texture to the sound.

      hi there. This is for sure an cool piece of music! I don't really do tutorials on 'how to make a specific sound'. I like to think about making music as a kind of exploration without trying to create something specific - instead I like to think 'what happens if I try this and this and this', and then when something interesting happens I follow that idea. This could be a specific sound or it could be something more broad. In terms of this specific sound, there are a few ways you could approach it: for sure putting a cello sample into a granular synth would work. Also there are some great modified cello plugins you could try such as Emergence Audio 'cello textures'. Or you could try a regular cello synth and then some plugins like Spectral Blur and see what happens.

    I love that I found your channel. I have been using similar approaches in ableton (for example velocity as a sort of logic operator) and it's nice to add a few more techniques to the shelf. I wanted to share one relatively simple thing I started using a lot. I make a "ghost" midi track, with no instruments and add midi envelopes, expression control, midi sample and hold. Then I map it to some parameters in other tracks (e.g. a dry/wet). It is a good way to create semi random effects that can be more frequent or more sparse (depends on how many notes you put in the midi clip). It's good also to use note probability. So basically using a midi track as a modulation sequencer, opens a lot of possibilities:)

    One of my fav max devices for drum edits, one thing I noticed, your drum trigger was on c major, it will never play some slices. Also can be nice to put the steps on a separate track then use the midi function and “midi to” the slices, then you can program a more consistent beat and bring the steps in at different intervals. Great video, really like all your stuff

    • @nicholasthayer5076

    New to your channel Nicholas, and enjoying immensely. So creatively inspiring, so subbed of course 👍 Got a question re envelope follower: it's response (latency) seems to be affected by the buffer size I choose. So the larger (and more CPU friendly) the buffer size, the more latency, despite Delay Compensation enabled in options. Really kills the attack / groove of the effect. Am I missing something? Or do I just need to get my MacBook nice and hot when sound designing or playing around? (with a super low buffer size) :

    • @nicholasthayer5076
      @nicholasthayer5076 Місяць тому

      Nice one! Thanks for joining! About your question - I don't think delay compensation will help so much with that. Perhaps check the attack / release / delay times on the Envelope Follower though, as these may affect things. The easiest way is probably to look at the green (or yellow?!?) line the envelope follower is making as this is the generated value that is controlling whatever you are mapping it to, and you can see this on top of the incoming audio.

    thank you nicholas. I just discovered your channel and I'm learning a lot from these. If I may : just as you point out at the end that you subsequently resample and chop up some stuff and so on, it would be super interesting to see (if possible of course) the way you continue working towards some sort of a composition/arranging/dealing-with-form. I mean I always feel like it is one thing to put together a patch (99% of the time a generative one and even using most complex audio programming using Max or SC or ...), and another to be able to put together a convincing narrative using that stuff. and this kind of angle is almost non-existent on youtube. thanks again 🤍🤍🤍
