The Book of Healthy & Tasty Food: How The Soviet Union Cooked Up Culture and Propaganda
hello hi,
Food is one of the most important cornerstones of any culture. It can tell us so much about the values, traditions, and ways of life of any community. It is a great way to understand the state of a nation, and today we are exploring just that. The Book of Healthy and Tasty Food was a cookbook with its origins in Stalin's Russia. A nation still reeling from the trauma of forced collectivisation that killed millions in the early 1930s, Stalin commissioned his minister for trade Mikoyan, along with a number of nutritional scientists, to pull together a cookbook to showcase the delights and indulgences available to Russian citizens.
Bringing together recipes from all over the USSR under one community, the book was a tool of propaganda to show the wealth and success of the nation. Recipes included multiple courses, decadent decorations, caviar, roasted meat and lashings of alcohol, but lacked any practical instruction on how these dishes should be made manifest. Whilst the instructions were vague, most families in the USSR would not have been able to find, let alone afford much of the ingredients listed due to the food insecurity the country was dealing with.
Food and the kitchen became a vehicle for both communists and capitalists to showcase the achievements of their society. The Food Book was lets say, highly aspirational, as we see modern technology brought into the pages of later editions.
I hope you enjoy todays episode, please let me know your thoughts.
Bon Ap!

When Cromwell Cancelled Christmas

hello hello hi, welcome to this festive eppy i hope you're enjoying the season and are feeling good. Today we're taking a step back in time to when Christmas was cancelled in England. Back in the 1640s, Christmas celebrations were a time for rauchessness, overconsumption and debauchery, so not unlike today. Having been through a tumultuous era with religion, having converted from Catholicism to...

Some of the victorious rebels in Syria last month burned Christmas trees. It's still going on!
While I'm sure this is mostly true, it's so overtly negative that it seems more like a piece of propaganda.
Based on what? Are historic accounts propaganda? Did millions of people die of hunger for propaganda, or what? These are things that Russia is still reeling from today and you can still see their mark on then Russian society today. You don’t get to call it propaganda just because it seems unrealistically negative. Yes, some people did also have good lives, not everyone starved, but this video is about a cookbook of indulgence commissioned by the state at a point where most people couldn’t even dream of eating those kinds of dishes. I swear it’s people that come from countries that had nothing to do with the iron curtain accuse propaganda first.
Didn’t mention how it didn’t work and caused starvation
Good job!

We all have our unique narratives, whether it's in the South or the North, and it’s important to honor and share those voices, because they shape who we are.
funny thought i never seen how elections take place in greenland, i know they are under danish rule.
This video is fantastic and I look forward to seeing your channel grow! One little nitpick at 2:10 though. As a linguistics student, the concept of the Altaic language family is very controversial and not widely accepted. Ket and Nivkh are language isolates, and there is little strong evidence that they are descended from the same common ancestor as, say, Turkic or Mongolic languages (though some think Ket may be related to the Na-Dene family, but that's also controversial). Nonetheless, great video!
@@elianasteele553 owe thank you! And welcome! That’s interesting, thanks for sharing ill look into that more. Interesting the root is Turkic - is that as in turkey / Central Asia?

Rediscovered in the 1980s & entwinned with repetitive beats, ppl danced themselves into other's beds but this was not seen as a sin & now looking back the dancers consider it the highlight of their lives! Great extracts & video BTW. Perhaps invest in a better microphone but i enjoyed your post.

You see, identity is shaped by the land and the environment. For those in the Arctic, the harsh landscapes influence their way of life-from hunting and fishing to their spiritual beliefs. They have a profound connection to the ice, the animals, and the changing seasons. It’s about survival and respect for nature, ya dig?

Good job girl! Love the scenery, beautiful pictures. And my beloved Greenland ❤❤❤ In Greenland the inuits say, that when they die they go to the moon to play football - because they loooove football. And it is said that all of Greenland is one big diamond rock, and you can actually find diamonds laying on the ice - small ones 🔹but it's rare. ~ Shout out to all my inuit friends. @GeographyGirll It is ..🥰 Good morning 🌅
We also gotta recognize the challenges they face-climate change, loss of habitat, and the struggle to maintain their culture in a modern world. It’s important to amplify their voices and stories, so we can learn and grow from their experiences.
Christmas takes little to nothing from pagan holidays. Well made video though

Yeah you should take a look at some other sources cause your facts aren't lining up historically, check out InspiringPhilosophy, Wes Huff, Mike Winger. They dive into the history and the historical sources.

See, i used to accept the dying sun thing. But I have never known and can't imagine anyone who lives off nature and the earth, but hasn't noticed how seasons work.
It's celebration through metaphor.
I think in London, celebrations begin 1st of December....one very long celebration & a way to lighten the mood due to less daylight hours & the awful cold to endure for possibly more months to come! Right now we are experiencing our first red warning storm in, apparently long, long time! I'm just praying my window doesn't dislodge totally as the putty holding it in place has dried out so much it's been falling out in concrete like chunks. 🙏 Please keep it safe.
@@Dawghome personally I love it, there’s nothing more magical then a festive london! And oh no!!! Praying for your window 🪟 🙏
In South America we celebrate with hot weather and mosquitoes, stay up all night till the 25 and some people release lanterns and fireworks and we eat traditional foods, a lot of people do it for religious reasons but even non religious people celebrate cause what else are we supossed to do? And i like that is kind of a hybrid of different celebrations even when they tried to disguise it as a christian celebration, i just love watching movies with my brother and eat deliscuous food at home, I lke the tree but i decorate it around Halloween with that theme, i take the fun parta of it and i always like to learn about the different traditions around the world and share it with my family
@@Morgan-lm6ns sounds like a lot of fun, love that you decorate the tree in October, more people should do that!

I guess everything except for the human sacrifice at the end is pretty good lol.
Exactly!❤
There's actually Little to no evidence that human sacrifice took place during pagan times. The most we have is prisoners of war being sacrificed and even then it was considered an honor even higher than dying on the battlefield or criminals would be sacred by hanging this is specifically the Germanic speaking people at least I don't quite know about Romans but we know for sure that some ancient Indo European peoples did it such as the scythians and the Aryans from the hindu veda's
@Indo-European-lad I just mention it because she did
Yuletide blessings to all 🕯
❤❤
Generally, this seems to be the time when everyone in cold climes fully celebrates getting everything together & ready for them to survive the winter. The earlier fall celebrations just celebrates the harvest itself. It takes some time after that to prepare & preserve everything for winter & some cultures spend the next couple of months between harvest & the beginning of winter to also wild gather some last minute supplies.
