A lovely soprano voice here. Again this film takes us on a unique view of both the quietude of domicile music and the grand endeavours that church festivals offered. Bach worked like he had a firebrand behind him. His St Matthew is as glorious as anyone could have imagined was possible. It was beyond musical comprehension in 1727. We cannot fathom Bach’s feelings but it is clear that ignorance nor criticism would suppress his artistic direction.

I love how Bach used unison voice in parts of this chorus. It’s very melodic and wholesome in nature. Now it is universally appraised for its integrity and craftsmanship.

It’s refreshing to hear his music imperfectly played, in a period environment, as he may well have heard it himself. The word and hope of God was central, and civilisation within the home all pivoted around the dutiful work of music, for the betterment of his life, family and wider society (as he had been shown by his forbears). Today we might see doctors and engineers put their hand to the organ for a service on Sunday but I suspect back then that once you decided on a profession you gave it everything or nothing. The children were thus more inclined to follow a family’s focus. If Bach was not innovative in the way he lived his life, he of course was musically. Look for one example at the ending of the organ Fantasia BWV572.

Very tastefully done. Unpretentious. I love that the chosen music here are not the famous works (apart from the incredible cembalo cadenza from the fifth B concerto).
