Tangle of Pathologies" Past and Present The Moynihan Report places our current social situation in historical context, and clearly reveals two things: One is that the nation has taken a ruinous social slide over the last three decades. The other is that we have become in many ways inured to the trauma. In 1965, one-quarter of all black children were born out of wedlock. A little more than one-half of all black children lived in broken homes at some time before they reached age 18. Nearly a quarter of all black women who had married were living apart from their husband. Fourteen percent of black children were on welfare. Faced with this "tangle of pathologies," Moynihan wrote: "There is a considerable body of evidence to support the conclusion that Negro social structure, in particular the Negro family...is in the deepest trouble.... [The breakup of the black family] is the single most important social fact of the United States today.... At the heart of the deterioration of the fabric of Negro society is the deterioration of the Negro family. It is the fundamental source of weakness of the Negro community at the present time.... The family structure of lower class Negroes is highly unstable, and in many urban centers is approaching complete breakdown." When the Moynihan Report was finally made public, Newsweek magazine referred to its "stunning numbers." The New York Times editorialized that "whatever the index of social pathology... it is apparent that the Negro family in the urban areas of this country is rapidly decaying." William Ryan of Harvard (one of Moynihan's most prominent critics) warned of "frightening statistics about broken Negro families, illegitimate Negro children, and Negro welfare recipients. Martin Luther King, Jr., categorized the existing breakdown of the Negro family as a "social catastrophe." That was then. This is now. In 1991, 68 percent of all black births were out-of-wedlock. Only 6 percent of black children born in 1980 will live with both parents through age 18, according to some projections. And more than 70 percent of black children will have been supported by AFDC payments at one point or another during childhood. (In recent testimony at a Senate Finance Committee hearing chaired by Senator Moynihan, the same Professor Rainwater who in 1965 warned against discussing illegitimacy predicted that by the end of the century out-of-wedlock birthrates for minorities will be 80 percent, while the out-of-wedlock birthrate for Americans as a whole will be 40 percent.) The Moynihan Report had little to say about the white family save that "the white family has achieved a high degree of stability and is maintaining that stability." Alas, that stability has now dissolved. During the intervening 3'b years, white family structure has been severely eroded by high rates of illegitimacy, divorce, desertion, and welfare dependence. White illegitimacy, for instance, has increased from 4 percent in 1965 to 22 percent in 1991. The proportion of white females who are divorced has tripled. If these trends continue they will have even more serious consequences for American society than the decline of the black family, since whites constitute a much larger segment of the U.S. population.
Chapter X: The Loss of Vision (The Mis-Education of the Negro) HISTORY shows, then, that as a result of these unusual forces in the education of the Negro he easily learns to follow the line of least resistance rather than battle against odds for what real history has shown to be the right course. A mind that remains in the present atmosphere never undergoes sufficient development to experience what is commonly known as thinking. No Negro thus submerged in the ghetto, then, will have a clear conception of the present status of the race or sufficient foresight to plan for the future; and he drifts so far toward compromise that he loses moral courage. The education of the Negro, then, becomes a perfect device for control from without. Those who purposely promote it have every reason to rejoice, and Negroes themselves exultingly champion the cause of the oppressor. A comparison of the record of the spokesmen of the race today with that of those of the eighteenth century shows a moral surrender. During the prolonged struggle between the French and English in America the Negroes held the balance of power at several strategic points and used it accordingly; today the Negro finds he inconsequential because he can be parked on one side of the fence. The same balance of power was evident also during the American Revolution when Negro soldiers insisted on serving side by side with others; today many Negroes are content as menials in the army. At that time Negroes preached to mixed congregations; today we find Negroes busy separating them. The eighteenth-century Negro resented any such thing as social distinctions; today Negroes are saying that they do not want social equality. Negroes of that epoch said with the ancient poet, "I am a man and deem nothing that relates to man a matter of indifference to me"; today, however, the average Negro says, "Now, I am a colored man, and you white folks must settle that matter among yourselves." At a still later date the American Negro showed more courage than he does today with all of his so-called enlightenment. When the free Negroes were advised a hundred years ago to go to Africa they replied that they would never separate themselves from the slave population of this country as they were brethren by the "ties of consanguinity, of suffering, and of wrong." Today, however, the Negro in the North turns up his nose at the crude migrant from the South who brings to the North the race problem but along with it more thrift and actual progress than the Northern Negro ever dreamed of.
Educator: Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune's legacy Bethune, Mary McLeod Sometimes I ask myself if I have any legacy to leave My worldly possessions are few Yet, my experiences have been rich. From them, I have distilled principles and policies in which I firmly believe. Perhaps, in them there is something of value So, as my life draws to a close, I will pass them on to Negroes everywhere in hope that his philosophy may give them inspiration. Here, then is my legacy: I LEAVE YOU LOVE. Injuries quickly forgotten, quickly pass away. Personally and racially, our enemies must be forgiven. our aim must be to create a world of fellowship and justice where no man's color or religion is held against him. "Love thy neighbor" is a precept which could transform the world if it were universally practiced. It connotes brotherhood and to me, the brotherhood of man is the noblest concept of all human relationships. Loving your neighbor means being interracial, inter-religious and international. I LEAVE YOU HOPE. Yesterday, our ancestors endured the degradation of slavery, yet they retained their dignity. Today, we direct our economic and political strength toward winning a more abundant and secure life. Tomorrow, a new Negro, unhindered by race taboos and shackles, will benefit from this striving and struggling. I LEAVE YOU A THIRST FOR EDUCATION. More and more, Negroes are taking full advantage of hard-won opportunities for learning, and the educational level of the Negro population is at its highest point in history. We are making greater use of the privileges inherent in living in a democracy. Now that the barriers are crumbling everywhere, the Negro in America must be ever vigilant lest his forces are marshaled behind wrong causes and undemocratic movements... He must not lend his support to any group that seeks to subvert democracy. I LEAVE YOU FAITH. Faith is the first factor in a life devoted to service. Without faith, nothing is impossible. With it, nothing is impossible. faith in God is the greatest power, but great faith to is faith in oneself. The faith of the American Negro in himself his grown immensely and is still increasing. The measure of our progress as a race is in precise relation to the depth of the faith in our people held by our leaders. I LEAVE YOU RACIAL DIGNITY. I want Negroes to maintain their human dignity at all costs. We, as Negroes, must recognize that we are the custodians as well as the heirs of a great civilization. As a race, we have given something to the world, and for this, we are proud and fully conscious of our place in the total picture of mankind's development. I LEAVE YOU A DESIRE TO LIVE HARMONIOUSLY WITH YOUR FELLOW MEN. The problem of color is worldwide, on every continent. I appeal to all to recognize their common problems and unite to solve them. So often our difficulties have made us super sensitive and truculent. I want to see my people conduct themselves in all relationships, fully conscious of their responsibilities and deeply aware of their heritage. We are a minority of fifteen million living side by side with a white majority of 177 million, We must learn to deal with people positively and on an individual basis. I LEAVE YOU FINALLY A RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. Our children must never lose their zeal for building a better world. They must not be discouraged from aspiring toward greatness, for they are to be leaders of tomorrow. We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends. Faith, courage, brotherhood, dignity, ambition, responsibility these are needed today as never before. We must cultivate them and use them as tools for our task of completing the establishment of equality for the Negro. We must sharpen these tools in the struggle that faces us and find new ways of using them. The Freedom Gates are half ajar. We must pry them fully open. If I have a legacy to leave my people, it is my philosophy of living and serving. As I face tomorrow, I am content. I pray now that my philosophy may be helpful to those who share my vision of a world of Peace. Mary McCloud Bethune (1875- 1955) Mary McLeod Bethune was an educator and civic leader. She founded the National Council of Negro Women, The Dayton Literary and industrial School for Training Negro Girls, and the Bethune-Cookman College. She served as that college's president until 1947. Bethune, a good fundraiser, had James Gamble of Proctor and Gamble as one of her patrons. Another person was Thomas White of the White Sewing Machine Company. He helped her school. Like Booker I Washington, she believed in doing simple things well even manual work with dignity. She taught girls how to set tables correctly and keep orderly homes, inside and out. Adults learned the value of stable families and being true to each other. Cooperative economic development is defined as “an independent association of individuals, communities, and businesses united unconditionally to meet their holistic economic, social, and educational needs. Empowering and enhancing their community's quality of life through joint business and democratically controlled community ownership.
African Americans have a long, rich history of cooperative ownership, especially in reaction to market failures and economic racial discrimination. However, it has often been a hidden history and one obstructed by White supremacist violence. When there is a narrative, the history is told as one of failure. The challenges have been tremendous and have often been seen as impossible. The successes are usually anecdotal and isolated, minor understood, and even less documented-particularly as part of an economic development strategy and a more significant economic independence movement. My research suggests that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have significantly benefited from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the history of the United States, much like their counterparts worldwide. This book documents these practices and experiences, as well as the various philosophies behind the strategy of cooperative ownership among African Americans.
“Stumbling is not falling.” “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time.” “Without education, you're not going anywhere in this world.” Malcolm X

😂😅
Collective Ignorance is the new enslaver in the African American community in 2018 As I write this great truth concerning apathetic African American Leadership, it comes with great pain. As a child, I learned early in life everything has a price. As an Adult male and father, I understand the power of those words. Unfortunately, African American leadership has failed to collectively realize or cultivate this life principle. African American Leadership has been unable to understand "no one is coming to save us." Since the end of the Civil Rights era, the African American community has regressed into a deplorable state of social, civic, and economic co-dependency. The African American Religious, educational, and Political leadership ignorance are holistically killing the soul of the African American community. Before the post-Civil Rights era, we had a common philosophy of one love regardless of our economic status as individuals. Since then, we have regressed holistically into a state of profound Ignorance perpetuated by misguided African American Leadership. Today, a dollar lasts for 30 minutes in our community. Our families are broken and sick holistically. Our children don't trust us. Today most African American Adult men can't read at a sixth-grade level or empathize with family and community. Black Leadership is dead at the end of the Civil Rights era. The difference between a good community and a great community is Leadership. Today, Leadership is required in the African American community more than ever. The African American community collectively suffers not because of racism, poverty, or crime. The primary reason is self-inflicted Ignorance. I respect the African American religious, educational, and political leadership but hold them accountable overall for the blighted economic condition in the urban core. For more than 50 years, the Black Leadership has betrayed the African American community. The present African American Leadership cannot decrease the pathology in North Jacksonville, especially the Faith-based, educational, and political Leadership. The violent crime increase directly correlates to misguided leadership failure to understand and implement Community Engagement 101. No longer can the African American community allow leadership folly, religious fanaticism, and political cronyism to misdirect our resolve. The only way to improve the blighted conditions of so many in the Urban Core requires new Leadership. Open-minded cohesive Leadership, who are readers, live in the community, and are committed to our resolve. The African American Economic Recovery Think Tank has developed a holistic economic roadmap impacting the Quality of Life in the urban core throughout Jacksonville North Bank. The AAERTT understands the methodology needed to affect these communities. Further, the AAERTT knows how to build a competent goal-driven team to achieve that strategy. AAERTT has four implementation components required to increase the Quality of Life index by 20 to 30 percent within three years in North Jacksonville. 1. Rebuilding the Family Infrastructure 2. how does this answer the question? How have we progressed?
This pure manufactured history. You fools allow Ghanaians to tell you that they know the foot steps slaves took? Why don't you ask them the names of families that sold slaves? Ghana doesn't have records of nothing. You got an ignorant, uneducated curator at the slave dungeon telling lies to paying visitors. The best people to tell your history are your people. Stop relying on others to tell you their version of your history.

This was great. I hope to catch you live. I agree about the food. It's so funny because when I went to Ghana in June and had their pineapple, the flesh wasn't yellow like ours. It was white-ish. Now, in my mind, I was already thinking it wasn't going to be good. Well, I tried it. And let's just say for the rest of the trip, I wanted pineapple all the time. LOL. Slavery is history. There is not black history, no white history, no history for any specific race. All history is relevant and important, regardless of color of skin. Not everything needs to be segregated.
Yeah. Okay. You believe that. Thank you for commenting.
You do realize that the “black” in Black Friday refers to businesses becoming financially “in the black”, which means they are no longer paying off any debts? It has nothing to do with slavery or Wall Street
I am well aware of this. This is a clip from a longer discussion where we go into the origins of the term and it is actually much older than what you are saying here.

Why would America be named after a European named America who has not done anything significant in history but lend his name to America? That's just not how history works.
Not sure I follow. Can you elaborate?
@UrbanIntellectuals I will, according to White American History, the Founding Fathers who were all white and from different eras collectively wrote the constitution, lie # 1, Lie # 2 Christopher Columbus discovered America, a place where people already existed again white American History. Lie # 3 an unknown European name America, Named America, again White American History. Lie # 4, but didn't Christopher Columbus discover America already, and what did the European named America do for America that it should bear his name. Now the Truth. John Hanson, a Blackman who was a member of the Federation as was George Washington and others. They could not pay the troops after they had successfully fought to unit the 13 states and the troops said the would kill everyone in the federation, George Washington and others ran away leaving John Hanson to deal with them. John Hanson signed an agreement with the troops, making them the official army of the United States, thus the United States the Country was formed, he later namer America because it was an Amory to any outside forces. He then sat down along with the Federation, which included George Washington and others, and spearheaded the writing of the constitution. That's a synopsis of America.
@UrbanIntellectuals capiche!
@UrbanIntellectuals U Tube, whatever happened to my reply of The synopsis of America. U Tube, ya ain't right
BLACK POWER in America means knowing that a Blackman name, JOHN HANSEN, is the founding father of these here, United States of America. He wrote the constitution and name the continents of America's. The evidence to support this comes from the fact that Christopher Columbus discovered America according to European history, and then a European name America discovered it again, but how could that be when Noth America wasn't even a country yet. JOHN HANSEN, after George Washington and company ran and left him, he stableize the troops and United 13 States, establishing these United States and naming them America. He then wrote the Constitution for those 13 States.

I just love the way he talks about truths with a total sense of humour. He manages to captivate the audience by telling dark truths with a touch of humour. This is a good way to get people's attention, for you can easily lose a people when your delivery has too much fire. R I P

I home school my daughter. She has high functioning autism and very bright. I want to bring her to Africa to enlighten her on her roots. She has a mindset that being of color is not as valuable as Anglo Saxon. She is 15 yrs old, and I would like for her to see how teenagers thrive in the African community. She is a nature buff too, so I was thinking there may be some places of wild life she could visit.
Hello @TheIEPsolutionist! That sounds like an amazing and meaningful journey for your daughter! Our trips are very kid-friendly, and we make sure to highlight the beauty, diversity, and vibrant cultures across Africa. She’ll have the chance to experience daily life in local villages, meet people of all ages, and see firsthand the vibrant communities across Africa. Since she’s a nature lover, we offer incredible wildlife experiences in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa. Each location has unique ecosystems and opportunities to see wildlife up close. We would love to be part of her journey in discovering her roots and embracing the rich history, culture, and landscapes of Africa. Let us know if you’d like more details on specific tours tailored to fit her interests! sankofaexperiences.com/
