As part of a trip to Iona Island, I decided to also stop in Garrison as the River Line was dead for a bit, I ended up seeing roughly 5 trains in about an hour. Unfortunately, there were no Heritage Units within that time frame.

On February 22, 2024, Amtrak was running a test extra to Newark Penn, however, was not exactly clear of what was running. I decided to head out and see if it was worth a catch. The consist was just 2 brand new ALC-42's and a Coach sandwiched, so I decided to stick for the return, but at Metropark instead.

    160 mph? Still primitive compared to the far more advanced countries of the far east, Europe and now add india to that list who is moving along smoothly in their highspeed rail project. In Japan, maglev super train technology is their next generation bullet train. These trains run on magnetic levitation and can reach speeds of up to 375 mph. 160 mph is a crawl compaired to this. If Amtrak could reach this speed. It can only achieve this on a short stretch due to the bad quality of tracks it shares with freight trains. Inorder for this to work, these so called highspeed trains would have to operate on tracks that has been constructed and dedicated to highspeed trains only. Till then they will never be able to operate at full capacity. Overall, the bottom line is, The so called (mighty) United States of America will continue to lag behind the rest of the world. Highspeed bullet trains and maglev super train technology, the new american dream......

    I was taking NJT into the city yesterday. Passed it out during testing halfway between Newark and Secaucus. It was heading to Philly. First time I've seen an HHP in probably close to 15 years now. It's like seeing an old friend again.

    Wait are the Metroliner cab cars so end of life that they cannot last until the first Aero sets are delivered? You'd think they would be the first priority for replacement being an actual push pull service already. This seems like a classic example of the type of senseless waste of budgetary funding that critics love to see.

    I saw this set Trenton on February 10 making a simulated stop. And I do mean simulated. They were only stopped for two seconds, not concerned about allowing for station dwell time. Otherwise I would’ve had time to walk up front for a picture.

      It's being tested for use as a cab car, so it's there for control only and no longer delivers power. Amtrak's old Metroliner cab cars are nearing the end of their life, and the HHP8-C, if the test is successful, will be a replacement.

      The HHP-8C doesn't have pantographs to raise in the first place. When Amtrak converted the HHP-8 to the HHP-8C / HHP-C or whatever they're gonna call it, they removed the pantographs. There's no need for them if it's going to be a cab car or NPCU (Non Powered Control Unit).

      @@YaboyMX595 I have been on the NER multiple times and have never been on it one with a cab car. It usually changes engines at DC to head into Virginia and Southampton yard in Boston has a loop to turn trains around.

      ​@@MattyC62185, @ChristianLovell5750 + @YaboyMX595 are correct. Amtrak Northeast Regional 121 is a Sunday only train that operates between NYP & WAS. It leads with a Metroliner Cab Car because it makes a quick turn to 122 to head back to NYP. I caught it on video at Princeton Jct here: ua-cam.com/video/ExeWeBX6FSQ/v-deo.html There are quite a few videos of this train on UA-cam, just type it in the search bar. The other info you spoke on, although true for other trains, doesn't pertain to 121 & 122.

    That’s not a NPCU, it’s a HHP-8 but renumbered cuz their original numbers got tooken by the ACS-64s.

      It is an HHP-8, but, was converted into a cab car with the engine being removed, rendering it to a NPCU
