The 500s (CX500) Part 12 - Title Troubles
Lot of talking in this one, but sometimes you've just gotta talk, right?
Titling a vehicle (when you buy one without a title) in Virginia isn't that hard, just takes time. Don't take TOO much time, though, or you'll end up like me. Also I finally get around to fixing some of the final details on the CX.
More to come, stay tuned!
The music is all from DJ Grumble, who is amazing and deserves all of the good things

If anyone comments on my driving, I'll cry
You’re an excellent driver
Way too fast
@@Matthew52303 okay I'll give you that
I would pull those carbs and give them a good cleaning.
your gaz is too old
Spoiler alert: there were many problems, but the ultimate one that kept the bike from running was accidentally swapped main jets. The customer got rid of this bike months ago, so I will never see it again, but I’m told that it’s running great and being ridden regularly. 👌🏻
At least honda had the balls to come out with a chopper style bike from the factory, while everyone else did it after the fact ❤
Very true, Honda has taken a lot of big swings over the years. A lot of them paid off
Just got around to watching this one. Can’t believe it came back to life so easily. Really can’t kill these CX motors. Good job
Not gonna stay dead with me around
What brand of seat is that?
It’s a Corbin
If I have a bike like this, the first thing I would do, if this hadn't been done already, is attach a fuel level gauge to each of the bowls while the carburetor is installed on the bike and see where the actual fuel level is. And if you can get the bike to be running while the fuel level of each bowl is being checked, so much the better. My guess is that the fuel level is way, way above where it should be. Adjust float level as necessary. That would be just the start. If that doesn't work, return the bike as much as possible to stock condition. There's been so much tinkering with this bike that it's impossible to figure out the main issue, or combination of issues. Also, hyperchargers may look cool, but I don't believe they do anything for the bike that would justify the expense.
You need to sync the carburetors
That bike should have stock jets With that set up low speed 17.5 primaries 115f-117b.
great video, keep up the good work. and Happy Birthday
Thanks!
Ended up being carb needed rebuilt runs esculent now
I love to hate these bikes. I have built and rebuilt them from the frame up. It’s so hard to find or locate a problem when you’re not seeing everything.
Someone had rigged this bike up to barely work, and when I started fixing the issues I was finding, it just made everything worse.
Have you tried the air/fuel mixture screws? They may be too too far in to idle. Have you balanced the carbs?? Neither was addressed in the video. Are you running the stock air box? There may be an air leak. Did you mix the main jets? the rear carb has
The rear cylinder carb has a larger main jet.
The bike is long gone now, but these are all excellent suggestions. Mixture screws were tested at several different settings, I seem to remember them being about 3 turns out, but I’m not sure. I never got the bike to run long enough to balance the carbs. Air box was aftermarket - hypercharger - and was properly secured. I was not aware of the difference in the main jets, that may have been the ticket. The owner traded this bike after we couldn’t get it sorted out, but apparently the new owner got it up and running
Change the fuel pump….its not regulating.
Fuel pump pushing fuel past the float needle?
I guess I’m gonna do a thorough carb job been messing with this issue for a month now same problem
Ok I watched the second video. I am exactly where you’re at. Did you ever happen to find out the fix Sherwood appreciate the info your vids were great.
Ended up being jetted too rich, the owner didn’t want to fool with it anymore so he traded it
Ok I’m I’m having some of same issues. It’s running on both cinders but front engine gas running through to exhaust pipe any suggestions
So I just bought a 2006 vstar 1100 and I bought the bike running and trailered it home it started the first time at home but ran into a similar problem but also I can’t get it to start ignition makes a noise but nothing else
If you’ve got a good battery, and everything leading up to the starter is working properly, you may have a problem with your starter or the starting clutch. Evidently the starting clutch is a weak link on these bikes.
What did you use to set your float level?
The way I check float level is with clear vinyl tubing on the drain, but that wasn’t the issue here
I can't take any more of this " tinkering". The floats are definitely sticking or float level messed up. Keep cranking it while playing with the throttle and you will be replacing a starter clutch
You’re absolutely right, the floats were sticking. I very likely did do some damage to the starting system with all the cranking, but the bike is long gone now 👌🏻
Your float needles are not seating right. They are not sealing off the flow of gas when the float raises up. Did you check the floats and make sure there was no gas in them? Even a pin hole in a float allows fluid in them and they will not shut off the gas flow. Your fuel pump always priming is the giveaway either the floats are bad or the needles are not sealing off with the float.
That was an issue, you’re right. The main issue ended up being with the jetting. It was way too rich. The bike was only running when the owner bought it because whoever had last worked on it left everything loose. There were huge air leaks, and tightening up the loose parts made the bike dump so much gas into the intake that it was just constantly fouling the plugs. The owner traded the bike, though. There’s more details in the next video if you’d like to check it out
Synchronize the carbs!
I live at 6000 ish feet and changed my stock 90 jets to 86 on my 650. She run great now
👊👍
I have very strong feelings about those pod filters. One question. How dare you? OKMB4Life
With gas that old having been run through the carbs, my bet is a piece of trash was holding the needle off the needle seat just enough so that the valve didnt close causing the flooding issue. Those carbs needed to be cleaned bad.
👊👍
Am I missing something here.. You checked clearances and did the carbs. right !? The problem is somewhere in those areas I would imagine ..
Am I missing something here.. You checked clearances and did the carbs. right !? The problem is somewhere in those areas..
It was rich jetting, dumping a whole lotta fuel into the cylinders and fouling the plugs. The owner didn’t feel like going through the process to get it figured out so he traded it
Give it to me, I’ll have it up and kicking in no time…….patience my son patience.
Lol, if we still had it I might take you up on that. The owner traded it for a 650. We were going to have to start fiddling with the jetting on it and he didn’t want to fool with it anymore
👍
Well the fuel pump is not working as it should. You can hear it trying to prime itself every time. That much gas from the exhaust means there is constant gas flow. Are the gas lines to and from the pump the wrong way around?. The easy way to isolate the problem is to bypass the gas tank and fuel pump. Just feed gas directly to the carbs and see what happens.
Definitely was dumping a lot of fuel, a float adjustment took care of that. The jetting was too rich, and the owner didn’t want to mess with it anymore, so it’s been traded 👌🏻
My bet is the needles have something on them preventing the needle seat from fully closing. And my bet is when the carbs were cleaned the needles were overlooked as was the needle seats. I had the same issue with mine when i got it.
Regulator/rectifier terminal? I've just tried to start my VN750 and met some problems with it. Checked regulator resistances (according to manual) and found out - my regulator is dead. Also I'd check high voltage wires from coils to spark plugs and coils (sometimes it works on high rpm and cause pain in ... at low rpm).
That very well could be a thing, but the owner of the bike traded it, so we may never know 🤷♀️
@@okay_motorbikes too bad - I've hoped to see the reason.
@MrBaclajan it was the carburetor jetting, much much too rich, just kept fouling the plugs. I’ve got a final video coming up soon 👍🏻
👊👍
Did you adjust the idle ?
Yes, among many other things, lol. The issue ended up being incorrect jetting for our altitude, but the owner is in the process of trading the bike so it's a dead issue
sounds like stuck floats
Float is prob stuck and dirty carbs.
Needs carbs gone through
👊👍
👊👍
*Spoiler Alert* I’m not actually giving up on this rude boi, just relocating it
Did you check compression? Maybe maladjusted valves? Timing Issue?
Timing can’t be adjusted according to what I’ve read. I do still want to check compression, but my tester wasn’t at home. I’m closing in on it
👊👍
Glad to see it was salvageable! I'm always looking forward to the next episode of the 500s, keep em coming
Well I’ve got good news! I’m uploading a new one as we speak
👊👍
I love those gold wheels!
Thanks! I was so happy with how they turned out, the color was exactly what I was picturing in my head
What was the length you ended up with? 257mm? I have a rod which is 256mm and I have the same problem you mentioned on the forum
257mm is it, yes. Make sure it’s hardened steel, otherwise it will get shredded
