The volume is appended with letters and documents between the Leopoldina Academy of Natural Curiosities and the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences.

The dissertationes de Masticatione Mortuorum were authored by Ranft in 1725 and 1728, then were expanded into his Tractate on the Chewing and Smacking of the Dead in Graves in 1734. This volume is the embodiment of Occult Philosophy in regard to understanding the strange phenomena in nature that were still so hidden and unknown in the Early Modern scientific discovery.

In 1732, news of a report depicting a plague of vampirism emerged from the Kingdom of Serbia and had spread quickly throughout the Holy Roman Empire. This caused a debate between several academics, physicians, theologians, and even alchemists, who all argued upon the true nature of the several phenomena that were detailed in the report.
