Hi Duval Gardner, I am late to this post. I am in zone 9A, Alachua FL. I have several citrus, loquat, avocado, peach, persimmon, mango, apple, and cherry trees that are either in pots or in the ground, and I haven't lost any of them. One of the tricks that I use when a tree isn't doing well in the ground is to place it in a pot (if it isn't too big) for at least a season or two to nurse it back to health. This will help you pay close attention to it in all kinds of weather conditions. You definitely don't want a sick plant in the ground struggling in our brutal Florida sun when you are trying to figure out what is wrong with it. That is why being in a pot with the proper soil, water, pest control, and (liquid) fertilizer, if needed is the best condition to save a plant while it is trying to recovery. I wish you the best on growing your food forest.

Oooooo...I would be furious, bebe gun investments immediately! lol I have found mesh bags doesnt work on squirrels, but brown paper bags do. I placed a larger one over my ripened sunflower head and actually watched one give up after 10 minutes of attempting to rip the bag open lol. Try dollar store brown paper bags and some zipties.

I’m mad lol 😂 I have lost peaches 4 years in a row not to squirrels but plum curculio you will have to adapt a spray program for this insect and other fungal diseases that plague them .

You can grow it in containers, I would recommend as a cross to go with the AU Rosa plum. Its the improved varity of the Santa Rosa Plum by Alburn University. Hooah

That Key Lime won’t make it that far north. If your looking for something cold hardy, look into the Red Lime. That one is money and great for North Florida. Hooah

I had a mango tree that just started to produce. It had five mangoes. The squirrels got three of them. My wife from the Philippines put brown paper sandwich bags over them, folded them at the top and stapled them. Worked great !

Seems to me that plastic bags aren't good anyway. They are made from fossil fuels. Paper seems more organic, but what do they put in the paper? I'm still going with paper.

The birds ate my acerola cherries, I waited so long for them, so disappointed. I have some peaches, I was going to use those bags, I was hoping it would keep the critters away from them, but it looks like they won't. At least it might keep the worms off them. I have stray cats that roam the neighborhood and sometimes they help, but lately they have just been chasing lizards and the squirrels are getting brave.

I love starfruit. I think they tastes like apples and grapes mixed together. Congrats on the find! I am going to have to check out Home Depot, I always forget to go there because it's a bit further than Lowe's from me. I found a sugar apple at Walmart. I was floored that it was there, so I snatched it up fast. I don't know if I can keep it alive in my zone, but I'm going to try.

Your tree is small enough to wrap with tulle fabric. Squirrels and raccoons hate it bc their nails get caught in it. Try keeping the bags on and drape with tulle fabric. Use giant paper clips to hold fabric together and put blocks on the tulle on the ground to keep them from getting underneath. Hope this helps. Squirrels ate all my melons last year. Even chewed thru a thick vinyl fence I put around it. Good luck.

Make sure that the meyer lemon isn't growing shoots back out of the rootstock. You could end up with some low quality fruit if that's the case. Edit: Looks like quite a few people pointed this out already. What was the result when you checked it?

Never tasted star fruit before. Then again, being in Central Ohio, I don’t think I have ever seen it in grocery stores here. Wouldn’t mind having a tree, buuuut - I’m not willing to muscle a potted tree inside every winter. 😅

Great find! I have a dwarf red but it's tiny compared to your tree. Supposedly they have oxalate in the fruit, like a grapefruit, that interacts with medications or anyone with kidney issues. So careful who you give the fruit to.
