TheC64 Mini: Adding games to the Carousel
YES IT IS !
Goosebumps
100% true
The arcana is the means by which all is revealed
Thanks for the video ! But I have tried with the same steps like you , but the descriptions of the games doesn't appears on my tv . Any ideas ? Thanks
Hmm, I’m not sure I’m afraid. I’ve not fired mine up in a while, so maybe there’s been a software update.
Do you have root access when you do this, does it work on the newest firmware?
I don’t think I needed root access. I’ve not used mine in a bit, so I’m not sure about compatibility with the latest firmware.
Hey, how did you managed to make it boots so fast and that the nintendo logo appears after you launched the game? I have added all the bios files
I’ve noticed it takes a bit longer to boot since a recent update. To get the Nintendo logo you have to access the Retroarch menu while in a game, and go to Quick Menu>Options>Use official bootloader
Thanks for the video. Just bought a C64 mini and it works exactly like you described :)
But can it run Crysis?. Love the C64 👍
Even if just using a phone, you can make good videos. I can recommend inshot for video editing. Video overlay for laying video on top of a background is great, and video compressor to reduce video size.
I've had the mini and maxi. I was having some issues with the mini not booting after firmware updates using the C64 maxi tool, which worked flawlessly on the maxi, a great product. Maybe I had a dodgy unit. I'd like to try again with the mini, but it's not a patch on the maxi tbhonest. I used the Amiga mini joypad on both the mini and maxi without fuss. Not great for diagonals on Barbarian and Fist. Both models had limited joypad compatibilities, unlike the Amiga. With the upcoming Spectrum, November 2024, I hope joypad compatibility is much improved. It's definitely worth upgrading the carousel to your own games list. That's a must for me, as there's so many modern homebrews, including Sonic C64!
I prefer the Atari 400 mini, but the C64 mini is still good.
I REALLY LOVE MY C64 ❤❤❤ FOREVER ❤❤
Man i gotta buy one,it can even play original gb games!
Can I use old controllers?
Some work, most don’t. gurce.net/c64mini/hardware_compatibility_lists
Very cool project ! can you reupload the image ? link are dead please thanks
I think I got it from Arcade Punks. I’ll do some digging and see if I can find it.
www.arcadepunks.com/128gb-raspberry-pi-3b-tg16-mini-image-over-700-roms-with-custom-theme-from-retropython/
Can you type on it? Or is it made for ants?
The whole keyboard is one single button, but the forgot to put an actual switch underneath.
The keyboard overlay could have been better implemented- only essential keys on it and been bigger. Most emulators don't have it shoved to the side. Also swap out the crappy joystick, with a gamepad.
Thanks a ton! Ordered a C64 mini today and it should arrive to tomorrow :) Got the firmware good to go thanks to your guide!
Literally had to come and comment. Is it worth buying in 2023? It's a console from 1982 it's not that it's going to get out of date.😊
It’s a fair point. I probably could’ve left off the year as it’s irrelevant.
And as if by magic, the title’s been changed!
Hey I wasn't trying to be mean. I just found it amusing. I was born on that year and actually spent a lot of time playing all the crap games. A lot.
@@SamsungGalaxy-j7y9q I know you weren’t being mean, I just thought you made a valid point. It’s a retro console, it doesn’t matter whether it’s 2023 or 3023, it’s still going to play C64 games. It made sense to change the title 🙂
@@TheRetroDandy cool. Just thought I'll explain. :-)
I bought one years ago and immediately started tearing it down, added new ports, keyboard, mouse, extra storage, etc. and then re-cased it with LED indicator and reset/power button moved to the front of the new case. I’m currently looking at a rebuild that will improve on the initial layout, switching all the corded stuff to wireless, and going into the firmware to add sideloaded games directly to the "carrousel" and making the other modes so it can easily run Geos and implementing the virtual REU options. One odd thing is I'll be adding additional weight in the case to keep it from sliding around so much. Yes, all rather silly since I can just emulate it in a modern PC with VICE but I’m retired at 64 and other than golfing/mowing the lawn I need something to putter around with.
Anernac
Y'know, Mr Robertarnold...I can't, and won't, do anything other than salute your choice of post-retirement activity. Buy a goat to graze on your lawn whilst you keep customising that miniC64. I salute you. 07 Of course, give it another 6 months and the goat will have reinforced teeth, an improved digestive system, updated software implant and a preprogrammed garden-chewing plan for maximum grazing efficiency...
Question is, is the Commodore 64 worth buying in 2024?
I think maybe 2024 is the year of the Amiga.
It absolutely is! And you can't beat the price. For about $40 the whole thing is cheaper than a modern game for a PC or console. And you get potentially countless hours of entertainment. The crazy thing is the new games seem to be on the rise in the last decade. C64 (and ZX Spectrum) are going through a bit of a renaissance. And the newly released games are quite good too.
Yes
@@george._sir._gemini.175 I could have made a much shorter video with just that one word 😂
Nope. I find the C64 to be the worst aging machine out there. I've a C64, C64c and C128, and they all look mint, but annoy me as heck. None of them is a fun system to boot and make a project on. To play games, like I did at my classmate in 1985? Not suitable either. I find my NES, PC Engine and Mac way more fun for games. Try Mac Prince of Persia vs C64 PoP. Not even fair. PC Engine shmups are out of this world, and the 6 channel wavetables eats shitty SID bubbles for breakfast. I think even the NES sounds better than SID. I also have a CPC and a P2000T, both Z80 machines with awesome basic, and they demand tinkering, doing experiment, run LEGO robots, do old BBS connections, all super easy and super fun. With the shugart floppy they also work very fast, loading a program in like 3 seconds, the machines have very easy ports to make new hardware and the RGB video output (40/80 character) on a SCART TV is excellent.
I actually just grabbed a loose one of these today for $30 Canadian from a 2nd hand store (no cables but did have the controller). I've been intrigued by them since it was first announced but seemed a little pricy at launch, but for what I paid it was worth playing. I'm sure I can get most that back if I loose interest
Having been there the 1st time around (true 80s teenager) I'm intrigued... mainly because my ZX Spectrum, C64, C128, Amiga 500, and Amiga 1000 are in a basement in another country. ;) Just having Paradroid would make it quite worthwhile. Did you review the US or EU version? (There seem to be differences in which games are preinstalled.) But the bad controller is a let-down. (Even though I've read somewhere that the controller is supposed to be with micro switches.) Regards.
Looks like I got the US version as it was missing Armalyte (added this myself).
I git it and loved it now im looking at retro computers
I’d love to get the full size A500 when it comes out later this year. I think Retro Games are planning on bringing out more mini consoles too.
Hell Ye especially on Ebay for used about £15 ..Know what your looking for .. The UK version has the Green 7 Pegi logo on the box .. If not its the European which runs to fast in the UK. Over 10, 000 games to play how could it not be worth buying :)
I bought it as a gag gift for my dad - his first PC was C64 and he loved it.
The good old Commodore64 was my first experience with a home computer, and the first gaming machine in our household. Still to this day one of my top favorites! Amazing to see there are still games being made for it, and these mini consoles is a great way to play them! Thanks for the great review - Keep up the good work!
It’s such an iconic system with such a supportive fan base. The scene will never die, which is great. The same can be said of the Spectrum and Amiga.
Hi I am having trouble updating the firmware. I have tried half a dozen flash drives and it will not read any of them. Any suggestions ?.
Is it the official firmware?
@@TheRetroDandy yes.
@@steveelston4016 Make sure the USB drive is formatted to FAT32, otherwise the C64 might not read it. This site covers how to do it: www.howtogeek.com/902632/format-usb-flash-drive-to-fat32-windows/#:~:text=On%20Disk%20Management's%20main%20window,when%20your%20drive%20is%20formatted.

Is Daytona still there?
I didn’t see it last time.
I love Arcades. I enjoyed this video. The Trago Mills Arcade is where my love for Arcades was born. I love Trago Mills. Despite it being one of my favourite places I haven’t been in a while. I hope to visit again soon. Trago’s always been part of my life. I’m now 23 but I have photos of me at Trago aged about 2 or 3
I’m from Falmouth, and there is a Trago Mills there, but it’s pretty much just a shop. When I first visited the Newton Abbot store I was blown away by the size of the place, but it was the arcade that impressed me most. At some point I’ll actually play some games rather than just taking a video.
@@TheRetroDandyTrago Mills in Newton Abbot is like a Tardis. The place looks small yet broadens up the further in you go. I went to Trago Mills last Week and the place is undergoing renovations. Apparently the Go Karts,Boats and other Rides are being overhauled. In addition new rides are being added. I’m hoping to go back to Trago Mills in the near future to see the renovations complete.
PEACH SYRUP AGAIN
What a drink!
Great 👍
Still love my C64. Been wanting my GF to check out some of the games I played as a kid like Law of the west, Project Firestart, airborne ranger, Rastan, and so many more!
Very funny. 🥇
Nice
30th? You mean 10th right?
😅
One of my favourites. I really enjoyed this version. Looking forward to seeing more gameplay!
I made it to the end of the first dungeon, it’s a shame the stream didn’t 😢.
I'm in this issue!!!
I’m going to have to look through it now to find you! New issue arrived today for subscribers.
Ah yes, the Zelda article, of course!
You can use a PS4 controller or even better a Fight Stick. I use a Mayflash. Hook the USB Joystick to the Mayflash and you should be able to map the buttons. I tried to type in a program with USB keyboard but certain required Commadore key commands to program are not possible with a non Commadore key board. Favorite games on the Mini would be Temple of Apshi, Sword of Fargoal. I wish they would have made it possible to play games or ROMs with "multiple disks" I haven't figured it out.
I’ll have to try the PS4 controller. Have you tried the micro switched version of the C64 joystick? I just wonder if it’s significantly better than the one included with the mini.
@@TheRetroDandy Haven't tried micro switch. I like using the fight stick. Feels more like an arcade.
Can confirm PS4 controller works!
I swore about as much as I expected to.
there will never be another wipeout game again.
I know. It makes me sad, such a great series.
😂🎉😂🎉
You used the exact clips I was hoping for on Pure and Pulse. Wasn’t too big on Pure, but Pulse was just great.
Pulse was great on the PSP. The PS2 port was a shambles though; unoptimised and deleting stuff from memory cards. It fetches a high price these days!
Random recommendation with no association. 23 views in 14 hours. Granted, I like Wipeout, 2097 was my favourite. I like this meme too. But I've seen or mentioned either in ages! I liked it. Nice vid.
Solid summary.
"Promo SM" 🤣
This is honestly a really good challenge, might have to try it with whatever pennies I have in my Steam wallet
Thanks. I just thought it would be fun to see what you can grab for pennies from Steam. Turns out there’s loads of games!
Man after my own heart. I bought a faulty PC Engine mini to do exactly this.
I think the PCE Mini will have a bit more space inside so shouldn’t be so fiddly. I’d love to see how it turns out.
