    On one of my valves, when I turn it on by controller it makes a whining sound while running. When I manually turn by bleed screw or turning the solenoid the sound is not present. Is this a solenoid issue making sound while powered on? Not a buzzing but a loud whining.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey День тому

      It’s possible that there is debris under the solenoid so that the diaphragm is not opening all the way, causing it to whine. I’d start there. Remove the solenoid and check the list under it. You may need to remove the entire top of the valve to clean the port properly.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey День тому

      You could also try replacing the solenoid with another one on your system and see if the noise stops.

    Hello good day. A quick question please. What are the 2 screws on the valve housing on the same valve on your video; but GB series (with out the clean water tube on the side). I figured one screw near the flow control handle maybe for the manual opening of the valve (bleed screw); but what about the other screw on the other side of the valve by the solenoid?

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 5 днів тому

      At first, I thought the screw under the solenoid was just a plug, but then I looked at the part breakout diagram and saw that it was also a filter. Here is a link to the diagram: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1987/5531/files/Rain_Bird_GB_Parts.png?v=1720461940

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 8 днів тому

      Great question. It is best to remove the cap when blowing out the system. This is 100% important if the sprinkler is the lowest on the zone, less important (but recommended) if the sprinkler is highest elevation on the zone.

    you missed the most obvious reasons for maintenance purposes having easier access to the sprinkler system is better. Usually, the sprinkler system is buried under dirt and difficult to access. I added two donuts and filled with sand to make changeouts easier and provide better clearance around the sprinkler. I have to literally excavate the two I installed risers on because over a few years they had become entombed in dirt.

      Interesting. Definitely not normal for a transformer to be bad out of the box. Silly question, did you check the incoming power? I live in an HOA and they recently increased the pressure of the sprinklers without telling us. A sprinkler popped up that I didn’t know existed because the previous owner laid a bunch of bricks over it to stop it. For some reason it’s right next to the AC and bathroom window. I woke up to this sound of rushing water. I look out the window and see this river next to my window and AC. So the bricks did work for awhile but not with this new pressure. I have the rainbird 1800 my neighbor who has an identical house has the hunter and there seems to be just normal standard ones sprinkled around. Best $2.39 I ever spent

    Very interesting and good explaination, except for one thing : it should clearer that it is for spray sprinkler, not any sprinkler. Il I understood correctly.... I don't think the third method will it work for Rain bird 3500 ou 5000 ? There is a sentence near the end where he says any spray sprinklers. So I still ha e my problem : I need to close 1 rain bird 5000. I thought a cap like.that should exist for those sprinklers too ?

    • @Andy_Humphrey

      Correct, it is not possible to cap a rotors because there is no such cap available for any rotor type sprinkler. To cap a rotor, you will need to use the other method, unscrew the sprinkler, and put a female threaded cap onto the service fitting.

    I have this controller and when I turn on I'm getting "NO AC" which tells me no power. I tested the outlet the plug is in and it is getting power. Does this mean that I have to replace the transformer? Could there be any other issues other than this? How can I test the transformer to make sure this is the issue? I do notice that it is hot though. thanks

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 15 днів тому

      Correct, NO AC means the controller panel is not receiving power. To diagnose this as a transformer issue, you should check the voltage coming directly out of the transformer using a multimeter, you should see something between 24-29v. If it is 0v, this will tell you the transformer has failed. If there is voltage, then the problem is somewhere else, like the ribbon cable, circuit board, face panel, etc. If you don't have a multimeter, you can use a solenoid and tap the solenoid wires to the transformer wires, and you should feel it activate. Or, a multimeter at the hardware is about $15-25.

    I've found that the solenoids fail on these units more often than debris being present inside the valve. The actuating tips at the bottom of solenoids wear over time. After a few years, the solenoid simply needs to be replaced. This is especially true with Lawn Genie brand. Just buy a new solenoid. Unscrew it by hand and install a new one. It doesn't matter which of the solenoid black wires go to the two electrical connections where you removed the old wire nuts. Solenoids are relatively cheap at the box stores, and any novice can replace them.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 14 днів тому

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 16 днів тому

      You have the K-Rain RPS Rotors. Good sprinkler. Unfortunately, manufacturer caps are not available for this sprinkler or other rotor-style sprinklers. The service fitting under the sprinkler is 3/4", and the easiest option is to purchase a 3/4" female thread cap, unscrew the sprinkler, and cap the service fitting.

    The diagram I've seen suggests using one header at the top of the slope, then an array of driplines that each run down the slope and terminate in another header at the bottom. Do you know if there would be any issue with rotating that 90 degrees? In other words, the headers go down-slope on either side of the yard; and the dripline goes between them, with not much slope change along any individual dripline. I ask because due to the arrangement of the trees in the yard, it would be comically hard to run the dripline down-slope, but pretty easy to run it cross-slope. Also, can you recommend distribution tubing to connect the headers and dripline to the source, and to go around areas that don't need irrigation without wasting water? I suppose I could use anything, but I'm looking for something that will last for many years while direct-buried.

    • @Andy_Humphrey

    Great channel man! Do you have a video to fix what I think is called hammering? I woke up when my sprinklers were going at 10pm because there was a loud rhythmic thumping/hammering sound. Next morning the sprinklers went off at normal time again and I saw all my sprinkler heads bouncing up and down coupled with the hammering/thumping sound (this was happening one zone at a time). I purged the system by shutting off the water supply, running the system and then finally, slowly re-starting the water supply. Oddly, the system started on zone 2 and seemed to have been corrected as all the zones ran normally. Just to be sure I ran it again- this time it started on zone one and ran perfectly but, when it went to zone 2 the hammering was back. Any chance you know what to do?

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 20 днів тому

      Thank you for sharing all of this information. It’s possible that one of your zones, or many, we’re not closing all of the way, and the diaphragm in the valves were opening and closing very quickly as if flapping. I would look for patterns, was this a one time occurrence, has it happened again, is it still happening, etc. I may not be a pressure problem, could be something else.

    Hi Andy, I just updated a zone from 3 unregulated rotors spraying about 30 feet each (one was pushed to 35 feet). I switched those out to regulated 40psi pro sprays with 1 MP3500 and 2 mp3000's. When I'm watching the MP's spray I notice they seem to be dropping the water precisely at the end of their arc but not much in-between. Is this normal?

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 22 дні тому

      Thanks for sharing all this information. Yes, this is normal, and is a bit strange at first to watch when we are used to watching traditional rotors and sprays. Each stream of water is a different length, and it can look like some areas are missed, but over a period of time, it is incredible how even the distribution is. You may have to increase your runtimes, depending on the specific nozzle that was in your previous sprinkler, and the precipitation rate.

    • @RandallSavageOhhYeah
      @RandallSavageOhhYeah 21 день тому

      @@Andy_Humphrey thank you!! I am considering swapping most of my zones over to MP. The lawn portion of my system, 6 zones, are all unregulated PGP rotors and I guess the pressure is so high they produce so much extra mist off the main stream of water that floats away. It looks like smoke if you glance out the window when youre inside the house. Hoping to save a lot of water with MP's or at the very least, regulated rotors.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 21 день тому

      @@RandallSavageOhhYeah - Wow, it sounds like you have a lot of pressure! Consider adding a pressure regulator at your water source so the high pressure doesn't become an issue on the entire piping structure over time. This could also save you $$ by eliminating the need to purchase the more expensive pressure-regulated sprinkler bodies. Just a thought. You can check the static pressure with a pressure gauge attached to any hose bib. Ideally, you should start with about 55psi at your source and end with 40psi at the sprinkler, but many factors can affect the dynamic pressure. My guess is that you have 70+ psi at your home based on your description. Good luck!

It should certainly be taken into consideration, specifically, if the sprinkler is located at the bottom of the slope, or is the lowest sprinkler on the zone. It is likely that only the lowest sprinkler on the zone will retain water, but if the system is being winterized, the cap could be removed for blowout. Thanks for pointing this out!

    You didn't talk about whether the PRS is required for the MP-Rotator nozzles. Can you use the MP-Rotator with the non-PRS 1800 heads?

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 23 дні тому

      Hi Alan. You are right; I did not mention this. PRS is not a requirement for any sprinkler nozzle. It is, however, required by law in some states when purchasing new sprinklers, like California - not because it is required by the nozzle (such as MP Rotators), but because it is now a requirement of the sprinkler body. In terms of the MP Rotator, this nozzle performs best at 40psi, so if you are considering PRS-type sprinklers, you will want to purchase the 40psi option. MP's work better at higher pressures than spray nozzles which will "mist" heavily at higher pressures. Yes, you can use the MP Rotator with non-PRS 1800 heads without any issues. Have fun out there.

    I’ll call an MP a rotor because there is movement. And yes, MP’s are the go to nozzle.

    Does this work with Rain Bird XQF subsurface headers? If not, what to use?

    • @Andy_Humphrey

      Yes, absolutely. The XFS dripline is 16mm, and the XQF Header is compatible with any 16-17mm dripline.

    I have always wondered, does a 1/2" funny pipe act as a bottle neck to a 3/4" rotor valve? I use 3/4" outlet T's from the mainline going in to the barbed fitting that always reduces to 1/2"diameter barbs in standard funny pipe. The funny pipe then leads in to a 3/4" elbow that connects in to the rotor body's 3/4" opening. Does that diameter restrictrion through 1/2" funny pipe cause any flowrate issues for a 3/4" inlet rotor? If not, why don't rotors use 1/2" inlets to match the funny pipe diameter? Thanks.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 21 день тому

      Excellent thought. Yes, it can. However, the bottleneck effect may not be realized unless the length of funny pipe is long. The effect will be decreased dynamic pressure due to increased friction loss. Picture what 2ft of funny pipe versus 25ft of funny pipe might look like. Bigger bottle neck becomes a bigger problem, small bottleneck is likely not a problem.

    Can you use this on a battery operated timer?

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 25 днів тому

      Yes, maybe, it depends on the specific timer. Check to see if your timer has a "sensor" input. If it does, then you can use this. Remember that you will need to power the receiver with 24vAC which may or may not be possible at your location. If it is not possible then I would recommend a wired rain sensor because it does not require a power source.

    Is there a way to use these locks for round value covers for my stations that are in the yard? I'm looking for a way to lock my round covers down because i have a critter (possible raccoon) that keeps coming through removing the covers an pulling the wires out. Guess he's looking for food. Anything can help?

      Wow, that is so funny! You must replace the entire box because the top specifically matches the bottom. It might be possible to cover your existing box with a new box. Perhaps you can trim the box to just a few inches tall and place it over. Osprinklersupplystore.com/collections/rain-bird-valve-boxes/products/rain-bird-10-inch-round-valve-box

    I've been replacing my super 800s with these over the past 3yrs, already had a gear fail on a t5 and I'm in MI... Not much of a watering season. Setting arc is very frustrating, much easier to align the left stop and consider it fixed then increase/decrease arc with screwdriver for right stop .

    Is it best to install the unit with the filter compartment pointing downward. That way, all the sediment would sit at the bottom of the filter (by gravity) when one removes it for maintenance.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 21 день тому

      Great thought. You are probably correct. It is often not possible to install it that way due to the ground being directly underneath, versus if it were installed on a pipe inside, hanging from the wall.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 29 днів тому

      Hi Sal. You certainly could, however, the only advantage will be for the sprinklers at the bottom of a slope, where water continues to seep out after the zone turns off.

    Which MP Rotors are better Hunter, Rain Bird orToro. My water company is giving a rebate 2 dollars per. I have a 800 sq ft front yard. Not the best pressure but I was able to get it to 40 PSI.

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 27 днів тому

      Great question. I can say the Hunter is the “original” with the most units installed. Is 40psi the pressure at the sprinkler, or at your house? MP work best at 40psi, and not so good at 30-35psi.

    I noticed on the rain bird 32SA the springs look too strong for my water pressure, I don’t think reducing nozzle office size is gonna help that , I have 360 fan sprinklers in back that work fine, same psi same length of hose, but I do notice that the spring gauge thickness is quite less, hence easier for a 40 psi to push out a popper ! Gonna try the smallest one now, but I doubt it’s gonna work! And yes I have double the heads 4 in ft and two in back which significantly reduces my psi ! So what’s ur recommendation go to lower pressure Sprayers ? Thks .

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 27 днів тому

      I’m not following your exact question. The springs are unrelated to the sprinkler pressure requirement. The 32SA is rated down to 25psi (images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--Sikg69SR--/bqsvkd5hifn3nc1mhytw) To reduce friction loss and conserve pressure you have 2 options. #1 increase the pipe size. #2 reduce the water volume (use smaller nozzles, or remove sprinklers). Last option is a booster pump. Hope that helps.

    Hello Andy, I have a PVB4A 1 inch Apollo valve. I need a "yellow nut" replacement - as mine have cracked over the winter and now leak. Do you know where I can buy these parts? Also, would it be possible to buy a better fitting nut made of copper? Having problems finding this simple part...any help or guidance is appreciated!

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 21 день тому

      Hi Brian. Which yellow nut are you describing? Perhaps you mean the yellow cap on the test port? This part is just a cap and not needed. If it leaks, my guess is the port is still open. Grab a flathead screwdriver and take a close look. It should be turned perpendicular for "OFF". It is probably turned just a little bit and is, therefore, leaking. Just a hunch.

    How do you cap off METAL sprinkler heads?

    • @Andy_Humphrey
      @Andy_Humphrey 21 день тому

      Hi Jeff. Which specific metal sprinkler? There may not be a cap. You will likely have to remove the sprinkler, and put a cap on the pipe feeding it.
