Black Sabbath - Children Of The Grave (1971)
Originally published at UA-cam on March 11, 2017. From their third LP, Master Of Reality, released in July 1971. I snapped up this album in October 1971 after already having purchased Paranoid (1970) back in March '71. I still
consider Paranoid their best LP because it had such a wide array of subject matter and musical styles. "Master" is far more cohesive and singularly focused in its approach. Still, some damn good songs on it, and above all my favorite is "Children Of The Grave." As songs go, it is one of their very best, I think (album preferences aside). In fact, it was hearing this track on WYSL FM one night that prompted me to go out and buy the album.
Although addressed to the living who professed an anti-war and pacifist stance, the consequence of sacrificing their ideals is clearly death (thus, "the grave"). Whatever the original meaning, impressions of the song have evolved over the years, especially among younger fans. Thus, it can be as Gothic a song as it is a political one (which makes for
a more interesting video). There is some live footage of Black Sabbath to be seen here as well. In the words of bassist Geezer Butler "'Children of the Grave' was the most
kick-ass song we'd ever recorded."
Included in this video as an introduction is the 28 second track preceding "Children Of The Grave" entitled "Embryo." The style is done in an English Medieval jig of death however, and it is in that manner it is portrayed.

The Rolling Stones - 2000 Light Years From Home (1967), a Tribute to Brian Jones

Originally published at UA-cam on January 15, 2015. 2000 Light Years From Home may or may not be your favorite Rolling Stones song, but it is definitely one of their weirdest. It originally appeared on their 1967 album, Their Satanic Majesties Request. This song features another guitar riff often said to inspire or be inspired by Syd Barrett's "Interstellar Overdrive," the other one being Love'...

Too bad I didn't get the idea for this until Halloween, otherwise if I had sooner it would have been up in October. Possibly the best song on the band's album, Goats Head Soup, other than "Angie" (another favorite of mine). The vinyl version I bought in 1973 was TERRIBLE ... I don't know if it was a bad album pressing or what. This digital version is utter magic and the way it should have sound...
The Rolling Stones - Love In Vain (1969)
Переглядів 15021 годину тому
One of the best deep cuts from the Stones album, Let It Bleed (1969). A quite popular FM radio feature that got a lot of play in 1970 and 1971 prior to the release of Sticky Fingers in '71 and still very much a huge favorite of mine. I wanted to do this song last year, but fell too much in love with the opening scenes from Of Mice and Men (1992) to be able to properly follow the lyrics and also...
Ethel Waters - Am I Blue? (1929), paired with Of Mice and Men (1992)
Переглядів 6521 годину тому
One of the greatest, early jazz/blues songs in history, sung by the one who originally made it famous, Ethel Waters. She performed this one live, many times, to standing ovations. After nearly a hundred years, this song still carries over. While Of Mice and Men may have been an introduction to cinema for some, to most, I suspect, the story was an early literary experience. It should be. I studi...
The Groundhogs - Split - Part Four (1971)

The fourth and last track on Side One from The Groundhogs album Split, this leaves only one remaining song, "Split - Part Three," left to be made into a video. "Split - Part One," "A Year in the Life," "Junkman," and "Groundhog" have all been made into videos and are all available on my channel. "Split - Part Two" and "Cherry Red" together I did on my video of The Groundhogs: "Cherry Red"/"Spli...

One of the most masterful rock performances of all time also had one HELL of a story associated with the lyrics, based on the song "Cross Road Blues" by Robert Johnson. Actually, to be more accurate, "Crossroads" was an adaptation by Eric Clapton of two Robert Johnson songs: "Cross Road Blues" and "Traveling Riverside Blues," with the weight of the lyrics coming from "Cross Road Blues." Accordi...
Bobby Helms - My Special Angel (1957)

Originally published at UA-cam on November 10, 2013. This is a true 50's classic by the late great Bobby Helms which peaked at #7 in 1957. I remember this as an often-played jukebox favorite well into the early/middle 1970's, especially around the Christmas season when his other big song, "Jingle Bell Rock," also got played. It's one of those tunes you just want to sing along with from a simple...

Originally published at UA-cam on March 14, 2016. Recorded and released in 1964, R&B and jazz artist Georgie Fame and his band, the Blue Flames, took the UK by storm with "Yeh Yeh" which sailed to #1 in January 1965. A month later it was released in the United States, entering the charts on February 13, 1965. It peaked at #21 on Billboard and at #17 on Cash Box for two weeks on March 20, 1965. ...

Hope amidst despair, this is one of the most profoundly haunting and lyrically stunning songs to come out of the 1980's. The first time I heard it I was hooked, and the MTV video by the band sealed the bond. I never thought I could do the song any justice in a music video of my own, but if I didn't, I hope I came close. This song makes me so sad. The song peaked at #3 on Cash Box and #2 on Bill...
U2 - With Or Without You (1987), starring Louise Brooks
Переглядів 15721 день тому
A major single for U2 and a monster hit for the 1980s paired with the lovely, incomparable Louise Brooks as Lulu ... and it works together so well. I am at a loss for words because it doesn't get much better than this. Pandora's Box (1929) was one of Louise Brooks' most famous films. "With Or Without You" was released in March 1987, and climbed its way to #1 on Billboard and Cash Box on May 16,...

    Because They're Young a flick featuring Tueday Weld was shot in 1959 snd released the following year. Duane Eddy's biggest hit was Because They're Young which I remember well, I don't rcall the film though but I sure enjoyed seeing things the way they were then especially the girls' hair styles. I was glad my memory got it.right!!

    Beautifully written interpretation. I never liked Love is the drug which is how American listeners were introduced to them on the radio. One day I bought their first album and they’ve been blowing my mind ever since. They became my favorite band and for 33 years, their genius is still uncovered and I never tire of them. That being said, I still don’t like love is the drug!! 😂😂😂

    • @mikemunrowsretro8973
      @mikemunrowsretro8973 5 днів тому

      Yeah, I first heard it in the late spring of 1968 on the pavilion jukebox at an artificial lake and sandy beach where we used to go camping in a trailer (first a tent, then a trailer and a tent). The manager stocked the jukebox and included this song in the 45 singles he loaded, most of the 45s were brand new or close to new hits. For me that would have been the tail end of 9th grade before and during final exams and summer vacation before starting my sophomore year. Where I live, a freshman still had to attend classes at junior high school, but if we were involved in senior high school activities, in my case I was in the varsity soccer team, we were allowed to leave classes early to attend them. A pretty good year all in all.

    • @mikemunrowsretro8973
      @mikemunrowsretro8973 5 днів тому

      Don't be jealous. Other generations always look glamorous in one respect or another because they are each so different. But that is merely change at work and work it does constantly. Every generation has its own challenges and its own opportunities. Every generation has to make the most of whatever the conditions are, the social mores and culture. And bad things have always happened, and always will happen ... as long as the world is run by humans. And some of us are going to be just plain unlucky; nothing is a given and there are no guarantees. Life has risks. Like they say, "this is not a perfect world." I would bet if such people were still alive today, that not many would regret having lived through two of the darkest decades of the 20th Century: the 1930s and 1940s. Why is because they managed to find meaning, inspiration, and happiness even in the darkest of times. That is possible when you are young, but it becomes more difficult as we age. But for everyone, regardless of age, are the benefits of advancements in technology as it continues to progress. Technology is only discriminating about age if the wrong people legislate it to be such. We have to be sure such people do not have that kind of control or we will all lose.

      Thanks so much Tim! I wish it would draw in more views. I thought it would do as well as say "On The Road Again" by Canned Heat or "Reach Out of the Darkness" by Friend and Lover. I can't figure this audience out. I put a lot of work into each video, in fact more than I have in recent years. Since around 2021 I have been more conscious than ever about my work and it is one reason my output per year has shrunk, the other reason being health and financial problems, but I try to make each video really count. On UA-cam the advice is to be as prolific as hell, get a lot of content out as much and as fast as possible, but if you do that, and I know this from my own past experience, the quality will suffer 75% of the time.
