Matchless G3LS Stood 12 years

We take a look at a Matchless G3LS that has been stood to get it useable for the road again.
Good to hear it run , the magneto on my 54 b33 died its getting rebuilt now , I had to take the head off, found a collapsed intake spring , it only had 10lbs on the seat , it was about 12 to 15mm short , definately the same type of spring as the new , are you still working on the matchless. Cheers
Hi mate, our part in the matchless is almost done. Magnetos are great when they're good, but at 70 years old they need looking after. Sounds like you've been having fun...... 10lbs aint an awful lot of spring pressure for a valve, sounds like you've got it licked tho
If you unscrew the plug cap and place the lead end on the case its about 1/4" which is the test gap. Its worth cleaning the slip ring and earth bush. There's supposed to be a gauze strainer inside the tank feed connection that can get bunged up. Worth checking while you have the oil drained.
Thanks for that. The slip ring is clean, but we can only get a spark at around 0.5mm...... I have had the felt strainer out and given it a clean, will look for a gauze one before refilling. ;)
Did you clean the points , and make sure your slip ring is clean , carbon ok , they have more Flux or spark at close to full advance . I have a 49 G80 rigid have a look on my channel , they are pretty cool. Cheers .
Yes mate, points were cleaned and reset as they weren't closing. Slip ring clean and pickup looks like new. Cheers
Hi yes I have a video on my channel , have a look , my g80 running when I first got it , but I later found it had the wrong piston , the picture , is how it is now I've made a muffler and a side stand, and fitted devon rims and spokes . At the moment I'm mucking around with a 54 Bsa b33 swingarm model .cheers.
Great to see the dog have a keen interest , I have a 49 G80 , mostly done up , but needs more work. 👍
Haha yeah, he makes a good crew chief!! Great old bikes, surprised me how light this one is, I remember seeing a couple of chops way back when based on these. I imagine the 500's go pretty well in such a lightweight chassis. You have any vid of yours?
DID U BYE THEM NEW SPANNERS WITH YOUR BIRTHDAY MONEY?
I did indeed thankyou.....
that side for the linkage, but why dismantle all the timing side, if it;s a gear issue the cassette is accessed from behind the clutch.
Because it's a 75, and wanted to remove the outer shaft to check the splines first. No way of getting it out and cam cover less work than gearbox had that been the issue. Gives me chance to vapour blast the 2 casings anyway and get some road rash weld filled and flattened off.
Too windy.
Hi Sheila, yes, the wind affected the sound more than expected. At some point in the future the equipment will be upgraded to cope better, and more indoor space to alleviate the problem. Please bare with us while we start out on this journey. Thanks for the feedback . Steve
Tell the camera man to keep his fingers off the lens.
Love it , always clever around engines
Cheers Dude
Great start Steve! I like your clear explanation and demonstration of how to trouble-shoot ignition issues. Looking forward to part 2 👍
Thanks 👍
