I guess I really need to a b a boutique amp and compare. But from when I hear and play thru them…it sounds good enough for me. But I do get that others don’t feel that way and it’s not to their liking.
Man, I think the 401 is a such a good clean amp. I have the DSL50 head…to which I use the green channel so much. Idk…I think these give great clean bottom end tones for me w a Strat or Les Paul.
I’ll have to upload a new video ….. this is when it still had 6550 in it. I’ve since had it reverted to EL34 and it sounds much better, plus I’m on a quest for some vintage speakers for it. Re:PHI- I didn’t actually fly with them, I worked for a local hospital that phi did medevac for, and the photo is from a ride along I did MANY years ago. If I had a chance to do over I’d have gotten my rotary wing pilot license and flown for a living.
@@brianr76 I used to have a 2104 like yours and also converted mine to El34, sounded better as well, it was one of my favorite amps. Oh that is still cool, I don't actually fly either I was a Flight Paramedic there for a short time before moving on to a different flight program. Will look out a new video of the amp.
Your amp sounds great. I have the exact same one. I changed out my preamp tubes (which was pretty trivial) but am hesitant to change my power tubes. Do you know of any UA-cam videos or other online resources that can walk me through how to properly (and safely) change and them and bias this model? Thanks.
Sounds awesome. I just bought a '78 JMP 2104 yesterday. It's being shipped from the UK to the states. It's got the EL34s in it. Just need to get a new plug to work stateside and couple new fuses. Should be here in a week so I'm pretty stoked.
Got it all sorted.... had a bad crackle (two resistors went bad) .... it was biased way too cold before, so we got that sorted. Also changed out the vintage impedance jumper for a modern one without chassis modification...
@@brianr76 That amp was my very first Marshall. I sold it 37 years ago, and still miss it. Glad to see / hear yours is in shape and sounding great buddy.
@@mitchpearrow4888 it’s doing great. Like I said, two resistors went bad and a third was changed for bias.. if I’m being honest I’m a bit bummed that three original piher resistors had to be changed.... but it’s working. Got a buddy in Colorado that hooked me up with a guy in Italy that sells NOS piher resistors, so it’ll be back to 100% stock in no time...
@@brianr76 That’s great bro Can’t complain about how it’s sounding now brother. Keep rocking that baby, because it’s full of the most famous tones that I have ever heard..
@@mitchpearrow4888 I bet. I will never sell it. You know all the crap I went through with the dsl.... this might actually be the first amp that I’ve ever enjoyed plugging straight into, no pedals.
@@brianr76 Brian my friend, the only pedal I ever put in front of that amp, was a cry baby, (for my explorer) because next to my Strat it always sounded muddy and I would half cock it. @@mitchpearrow4888 I’ve got a few pedals. Tubescreamer mini, 10 band eq. Had to use both of those to make the dsl sound good, and despite that, the JMP sounds better with nothing but a cable between it and my guitar. I use pedals for my twin reverb I got over the summer (it’s a 73) but only because it’s too loud to crank for power tube distortion. Haven’t even touched a pedal with this amp. I may try a few for a boost maybe, but it’s king all by itself
Mitch Pearrow thanks! I’ve been messing with it where I can.... had some personal stuff going on over the last few weeks that’s derailed life a bit, but this has been a good distraction.
Sounds like you have already got the tones you seek out of it brother. Nice job and great times are to be had, so sorry the Marshall shit the bed. But all is good in tone land. 🤘🏻👍😎🎶🎶🎸
Grim177 maybe a little difference? I’m honestly not sure the previous set was bad, but they’d been in there when I bought it. Had no idea how old they were. I had muddiness at the time and thought maybe changing tubes would help. It did to a degree. This amp NEEDS an overdrive out front to shine, and some type of EQ in the loop. I’m using an Mxr 10 band and it’s night and day different. Biasing wasn’t difficult.... just gotta be careful what you’re touching in there. The chassis has to be removed. After that, it’s hooking up to the bias test point, turning on the amp and adjusting with a small jewelers screwdriver (preferable one with a plastic or rubber handle). It’s also important to let the amp sit for 30 minutes after you turn off the standby to allow it to stabilize. Set a timer and adjust as needed. If your 401 is made after mid 2003 you’ll bias to .550mv, before that marshalll recommended biasing to 1.375mv, way too hot. If you don’t feel comfortable doing any Of that then I’d take it to a tech.
@@brianr76 Thanks! I was actually hoping that a new set might improve the low end on the OD Channels a bit but I think that's mostly down to the way they were EQ'd. I've tried a MXR6 in the loop but I don't like the way it reacts with pedals, it's fine with line out rack stuff though. I've been trying to get up guts to change the tubes out and bias it myself for ages! I've read-up and there's actually a great video on here showing how to do it too. I even had the chassis out earlier today to have (yet another) look. I'm so tempted to have a go because I'd rather not have to be reliant on taking it to a tech plus I'd like to be able to try different bias settings myself to find the sweet spot.
Grim177 as far as adding more low end or getting rid of it? I find the amp on its own to be muddy and has too much low end. Tubescreamer and Mxr 10 band cut most of it for me.
Brian Reid Hmmm I am sure you have already ruled out cables and and other connections. How are the power tubes?? I have never had this problem before..
And in the TTR I have a thread similar to LRT ‘s called show me your song ideas. Same as show me your riffs in the MF. You should post some of your work on it 👍
So brother what is your opinion ? I think it fattens up the tone quite nicely! I can’t believe how much it slays, but I am truly still loving mine. I think your tone just took a step forward brother 😎🍺🎶🎶🤘🏻👍
Brian you need to check out a music forum called THE TONE ROOMS, there are a bunch of cool laid back members, and drama free, and a number of guys you already know over there, I am one, and I am only on 2 forums! Cheers Mitch
