Winter comes early in Alaska. The signs are here. We are showing some of this summer's activities. More topics can be found on another channel. 1968AlaskanSourdough In these times of what you can and can't do with monetization, we moved much of our content over to the 1968AlaskaSourdough channel. Concrete Work is expensive.

Just an update. Weather (rain) is making getting to the cabin difficult. High and fast water, with flooding in the valleys is making it difficult. We had decided last winter, that we were going to do some work to our property in town. This summer and fall will dominate this work. Cabin is on hold for a bit, money wise. We still will be up there. Soon in fact.

Moving away from HavingFun AfterFifty, Starting a new non-monetized account, dedicated to the same old adventures, and some new ones. I guess HavingFun has some sexual undertones to it, tired of fighting youtube algorithms, and things I have no control over. Take a couple minutes and subscribe to 1968AlaskanSourdough to get notified of new content. This should be an interesting 2nd 1/2 to 2022....
Knives. What is your preference?
Переглядів 522 роки тому
Fellow Co-Worker asked me if I own a pocket knife. My first reaction is of course, who doesn't? Then I realize, pocket knifes are really a preference of utility, performance, and protection. A deep conversation between many people soon erupted. It really got me to thinking about knives, all knives. I never really gave it a whole lot of thought, till now. Why do I own the knives, that I do?

Last time we were up to the cabin was in December before Christmas. In December we went up to try to get a well drilled. There was complications and the price kept going up. We decided to post pone the work. Google a Marooka. We had pickups on tracks and a Marooka with a water well rig on it, in our neck of the woods. That video footage never made it to you. Frustration set in with UA-cam, as I...

Cabin Winterization

The Moose are Back

We ran up to the cabin for a very quick trip. Plans were to cut grass again and start putting cedar up on the walls of the Bath House; however, we got side tracked with a late start and supplies. After we got the rig going down the trail, my vest (which I had laid over the tailgate of the polaris) was jammed in the track and wrapped around tight enough to lock up the track. We cut it out, hours...

    I live near canada and i want to build a similar foundation like yours. I'm reading that the footing should be below the frost line but it is over10 ft in my area. But I don't see people digging that low in the videos I watch. Alaska has a frost line lvl similar to my area (according to google) so I'm wondering if that's what you did? tldr: what's your pier depth?

    • @HavingfunAfterfifty
      @HavingfunAfterfifty 2 роки тому

      You are correct in your thinking. We went about 4 foot until we hit pan or good gravel. The cabin does "jack" from the frost. If you are going for a bigger cabin, I would strongly go with piers. Piers will require a pile driver, hence a road. Off grid - If I was to do it again, without a road, I would be tempted to dig down till gravel and throw in a block foundation. I know expensive, and a lot of work to haul in cement by bags, etc. What you would gain, is a warm cellar, assuming you build the foundation high enough. The heat from above would keep the cellar (think root cellar) warm enough, just from the wood stove, or propane heat of cabin. This design would be more of a full time living design. Still build floor high enough say three to four feet above ground so you don't dig down to your front door in the winter. Many build right on top of the ground here. Big timbers as foundation. The drawbacks are obvious, snow removal, wood rot over the years. However, there is no pier jacking, that you have to adjust or re-level. Hope that helps. All about money, size of structure (weight), and time.

    wonderful construction, heavy duty going to last for a hundred years and a decade! One item I would add, a center support beam under the floor joists and supported by concrete piers which in turn would be buried to required depth into the ground. Heavy wet snow has enormous weight. Easy on the beer. At least while climbing up those ladders with weight. Good work!

    • @HavingfunAfterfifty
      @HavingfunAfterfifty 3 роки тому

      yes, support is key. There is a middle beam in the build. Longest floor span is 6 foot, with 2x8 joist. You can see in another video, last year we had about 5 foot of settled snow on the roof. Tremendous amount of weight from wet snow.
