What I don't understand: (1) Why do the fighters fly into their own flak barrage? They usually kept clear from that and attacked outside the reach of the flak. (2) Why do the bombers in movies always approach the target on a straight course? They didn't in real life because they had to change course and altitude roughly every 90 seconds to evade the flak bullets. There are specific instructional films from back then about how to avoid German flak.

My dad was a bottom turret gunner in a B-17 in WWII. He flew several missions before being shot down over Holland. He survived spending the final 15 months of the war in a German POW camp. Sadly, he only lived to the age of 29, dying in a car accident 2 weeks before I was born. Even though I never knew my dad, he will always be my hero.

Couple of questions. Are enemy aircraft not generally labeled as Bandits, opposed to Bogeys (which means unknown)? When Me-109s enter to engage, wouldn’t AAA typically seize? When the #2 engine is shut down, wouldn’t the prop continue to windmill? And… am I overthinking this?

It's an okay movie, and about a subject that has very little representation, the Italian theater and Romania. A lot of CGI that wasn't up to standards at the time.

The AI HAS GOT THE FORMATION ALL WRONG. The way the B17s are lined up in their formation there is no way that the B17s could defend themselves without commiting fratricide shooting each other. Stupid hollywood they think they can just through this together without any accuracy !!! Holly wood and these producers suck!!

My parents have passed away here in the 21st Century. My mom worked at Douglas in Long Beach assembling B 17's and C 47's.According to my dad's brother, my dad drove Higgins Boats in the Pacific. My father only talked about being on details in San Diego, and Long Beach. On the other hand my uncle only talked about the Chief he worked under in the DE engine room he was stationed on. My father said about his brother's Destroyer Escort dropped it's own weight in depth charges on anything that remotely sounded like a submarine. Also my uncle was among the first Americans to walk the streets of Hiroshima. Up to that point he hated the Japanese. He felt pity for them after seeing that city, and the other cities they docked at.

So, Sicily was a threat to world peace? Like the geisha girls in japan? the brave pilots on a bombing run over civilians again?

Captain Bebout is buried in Canonsburg PA. He was shot down survived and went back into the plane to drag others out but the bomber exploded taking all their lives.

No, they wouldn't shoot flak simultaneously as fighters are attacking the bombers - too much chance of shooting down their own fighters. The difference between Hollywood and real combat is the details. Kudos to the real Army air Corps. I think I will pass on watching this.

After watching this, I'm going to visit the monument again for the Canadian airmen (and one Brit) who died when they crashed in a field near my house. Belgium. Ramillies/Perwez. It was a Lancaster, but same feelings.

How the heck did they miss the fact that control of the aircraft is transferred to the bombardier during the final phases of the bomb run?

don't forget the pilots were almost always in their early 20s -- regular guys who volunteered for the Army Air Corps. God bless them!
