What's the deal with PressConf?
Say thanks and learn more about our podcast sponsor Omnisend. (your.omnisend.com/WPMinute)
In this episode, I sat down with Raquel Manriquez, Community Manager at Elegant Themes, to discuss her exciting new venture - PressConf. This event is a spiritual successor to the legendary Pressnomics conference, which was a cornerstone event for WordPress business professionals. Raquel shares her journey of launching her own business, Wonderland Curious, and how the idea to revive this beloved conference came from a genuine need in the WordPress community for a dedicated business-focused event. What makes this particularly special is that Raquel secured the blessing from Pressnomics founders Josh and Sally Strebel before moving forward with this new iteration.
What really struck me during our conversation was Raquel's authentic approach to honoring the legacy of Pressnomics while bringing her own vision to PressConf. The event will maintain key elements that made Pressnomics special - like hosting it at the Mission Palms Resort in Tempe and keeping presentations exclusive to in-person attendees (no recordings). But she's also adding her own touch with structured networking time to maximize the valuable connections made at these events.
The WordPress business community has been missing a flagship event focused purely on the business side of WordPress, and PressConf aims to fill that void. Hearing Raquel's passion and seeing the talented team she's assembled gives me confidence that this will be a must-attend event for WordPress professionals in 2024.
Key Takeaways for WordPress Professionals
• PressConf will be a single-track, business-focused WordPress event with no recordings - you must be present to experience the content
• The event features invite-first speakers, targeting industry leaders and known names in WordPress
• Unlike WordCamps, this is specifically designed for "hallway trackers" - people who value high-level business networking
• The venue (Mission Palms Resort in Tempe) is specifically chosen to create an intimate setting that encourages networking
• There will be structured networking time built into the schedule, separate from talks and social events
• The event runs April 23-26, 2024, with two full days of talks and one day for activities
Important URLs & Resources
• PressConf website: pressconf.events (pressconf.events/)
• Twitter: @Press__conf
• Instagram: @pressconf
• Early bird tickets available at $680 for VIP access and $580 for general admission

Automattic vs WP Engine As discussed by Artificial Intelligence

This video was created using a bunch of AI tools. I fed the official WP Engine complaint doc into Google's NotebookLM, then created a Descript project using it's Underlord features to generate chapter topics. From there I prompted ChatGPT to come up with 4 prompts for 4 individual graphics per chapter. I used the prompts to generate the graphics using the tone of "art deco" but in the 1960's. D...

Love the authenticity!
This guy needs to get funnier stories.
Heck yeah Raquel!
Sure feels like you were trying hard not to go off on MM.
Loved this show. You two are a great combo.
He lied about being kicked out, come on. He thinks people are stupid. His lies are gonna catch up with him.
You guys missed the part where Matt called "GoDaddy a WP business" like that's the reason they make so much money 😂 Looking at GoDaddy, do they pay 5-8% of revenue....that would be 210-340 million...doubt it. Interviewer did a great job.
Why they pay 5-8% of the revenue ? Godaddy Blog and their main website are different.
"just 8% of revenue" 😂 that's an insane amount for most normal companies that have real costs.
The fact that Automattic was a part owner of WPE until 2018, doesn't that invalidate Matt's trademark argument of people thinking WPE is owned by WP... because it was for most of it's existence 😃
This is brilliant..using the new podcast feature to make a software process debate itself based on web-gathered info, and with automatic imagery. Insane 😮
One month ago, little did we know what was coming.
I really enjoyed this episode. Really cool conversation.
Very nice interview, got nothing but good vibes from John. He makes the slam dunk argument at minute 33 when evaluating the current WP mess, WP without the 3rd party plugins would not be running 43% of the web
I absolutely LOVED this conversation. So refreshing! (especially given all the nonsense and drama we’ve been subjected to over the past few weeks)
Ghost is great but it is not a WP replacement
Thanks for having me! Was fun to chat :)
Really good content!!!
9:03 The WP Minute: "A flea on an elephant's ass" 💀💀💀💀
I'm genuinely excited about WordPress and SEO. Matt's microphone had a lot of echo in this conversation. Don't know why, but it made it a bit hard to listen.
I think I know what happened to the video's audio. Unfortunately I can't reprocess on UA-cam like I can with open platforms like podcasts :) I have re-processed the audio file on the podcast episode episodes.fm/1668197782/episode/YTNlMTdlMzEtODZkMy00ODNjLWJhZDQtZmMwZDBmNGRmYjFl
@@wpminutepodcasts Thank you very much! Great episode!
I fell your pain Matt. You go to work with enthusiasm only to find management squabbling between themselves and with suppliers, really messing up the tone of the work environment. Putting the WP Engine debacle aside, how all this is effecting the end user is concerning and I feel that at it’s Matt Mullenweg’s place here to take responsible leadership to provide the tools and environment that best serves the needs of a broad range of users. Closer to home with WordPress itself, there is a schism between the mainly gruntled Gutenberg users and the disgruntled outsider having to go further afield to get tools for the kind of work they do. It’s fundamentally a trick that the Wordpress core developers have missed and I believe that some subtle changes to how the block editor works and markup HTML could solve a lot of these issues, giving an opening to third party tools to used for more advanced work to integrate smoothly. This speaks to better interoperability and standards. It’s in fact what Kevin Geary is endeavouring to demonstrate with Etch and ultimately creating a product, Wordpress, that shine and every serious designer/developer wants to use. There’s room for everyone, from the block user, to the page builder user, up to the unified development environment. Imagine an organisation with an in house team where top designers and developers build a site in Bricks or Etch, output synced blocks that are then handed on to the content creators, keeping everything consistent and consistent.
Both parties? I'm no fan of WP Engine. I hold them responsible for nuking the Genesis framework and more specifically, my "lifetime"Pro Plus account. I just don't see how they are responsible for any of this needless drama. If this is truly about the misuse of the WordPress trademarks, why isn't the WordPress Foundation running point on this? Granted, Matt is one of three directors at the WordPress Foundation. How does that give him the power to demand WP Engine pay his company Automattic eight percent of their gross revenue? Will the other two directors make similar demands to WP Engine? I don't see how this will end with some sort of settlement. Why would WP Engine want to settle with Automattic? They've suffered real harm because of Matt's actions. Not only has WP Engine been harmed, but so has WordPress. What company, small or large, wants to be in a position where the CEO of Automattic can demand a percentage of their gross revenue because they are profiting from WordPress?
I think it’s too late. The usage has been slowly going down and this latest drama kind of just put the final nail in that coffin. There are so many better options out there now to do exactly what you need in a faster and easier way. Why would you hack together a bunch of plug-ins when you can get something that works exactly how you want.
I disagree.
@@wpminutepodcastsis that it? You disagree? No explanation? As a user, I agree with what he said tbh
“Deb” started talking and I thought it was Delilah 😂
There are two separate issues at play here. One relates to whether WP Engine did anything illegal or unethical. The other relates to how Matt responded to the issue. Regardless of issue #1, Matt has reacted in a really negative manner by trying to use public opinion in his legal battles and that has backfired tremendously. He has created far more damage to the WP community and has created a lot of fear, uncertainty and doubt and I don't think the community will ever be the same going forward. It really won't matter who wins in court if there is a court case because the damage has already been done to the community.
00:10 Tech Showdown: WP Engine vs Automattic 01:24 Legal battle between Automattic and WP Engine over business models. 02:43 WP Engine defends with the argument of nominative fair use 04:02 Mullenweg used his power to sabotage WP Engine 05:21 WP Engine faced security and reputation challenges 06:37 Can open source vision survive in big business dominated world? 07:52 Challenges of governance and stability in open-source software 09:08 Concerns about power and control in open source software Crafted by Merlin AI.
I talk to folks outside the inner circle and nobody seems to care much. That is my hope for the rest of us with time.
Probably true Kurt. Let’s hope that it stays mainly in-house and isn’t something more endemic.
Super thoughtful analysis. Thanks, Matt. You are the Dan Rather of WordPress. (A very high compliment :) )
I feel bad for you and people who are engaged in the community. I've been using WP since the first version, but never paid any attention to what was happening in WP World until the last six months maybe. Strength to you, I know stuff like this can be so draining
Great take Matt
Mullenweg spewing talking points....and running away. Jeez, this is so unprofessional. I don't care about WPE, but Matt is the one causing problems for end users.
Such a bad look for WP, Wix is celebrating

Discovery and adoption is what you are looking for Mark.
That's it!
I think that Jamie's recent 3 month subscriber explosion and his very pro Gutenberg videos helped him get that job. Got to give it to him, I watched those "do this amazing effect in Gutenberg" videos & they almost made me interested in Gutenberg again...but at end of videos, it's usually "sadly this doesn't work on mobile or not in this or that browser" and no way to fix it inside of Gutenberg... because it's still Gutenberg 😄
Wow wow Matt I don't think people are saying Core needs to do everything, but some basic CMS stuff should be added so we're not dependent on 3rd party plugins that might stop being developed. Most of the stuff that's in WP Extended for example should be Core, it seems that plugin has re-started recently, but it seemed death for half a year before that.
Maybe agencies shouldn't be the focus, but we don't want WP to loose in relevance, because that will hurt WP as a free platform, but also hurt Automattic's paid for products...so maybe to save WP, listening to freelancers/agencies wouldn't be a bad thing to keep WP relevant to what's happening in the wider online world
WP says it's blog first, but the default themes for years now line up more with what Kevin says, making more classic brochure websites. Last true blog first theme was Twenty Sixteen. This switch started in 2012 when they removed the Link Manager imo
I want to say that Matt Medeiros is just a great podcaster and supporter of the WordPress project.
Great chat! In your interview with Matt, the first question will be "are you real? is it true"
I'm so tempted to say something, but I will keep my thoughts to myself!
Do it! 😂
@@markjszymanski, you have to invite me to your show for a chat, and we can chat on why I feel Matt is wrong in a couple areas.
Very much thinking the same thing myself. Listening to Matt's synopsis of the whole top down leadership situation and it gels a little with what my thinking on all this has been for a long time, that there are are many in core that are impervious to listening to the real needs of profesionals. If KG's offering is so good it can't be ignored is there a chance for some change on this? It's a conversation that needs to be had, because at some stage someone somewhere will have to come up with a solution. Whether that's within Wordpress or elsewhere remains to be seen.
@@vaughanprint I agree and to some extent, I'm personally getting a bit indifferent to the whole situation, which, in the long term, is the biggest danger to WordPress.
@@wptonic the indifference is what will do for it, if it gets that bad and more attractive alternatives become available. Being in the older age bracket and moving on, younger punters won’t have the same emotional attachment to the old dog that WP is heading towards.
Keep influencing! There might be new ways to do it that we don’t know about yet.
Great chat guys
