This always fascinated me. Basically the virus was airborne long ago but for some reason it stays dormant until the heart stops. Maybe it's not strong enough to fight the immune system so it waits until it can infect the brain without resistance.

In the telltale series the teenager Ben found out when one of the students in the school suicided on an overdose and came back at the lockeroom. He tells the group after one of his companions turn without warning and attack the group. In Fear, Liza finds out when she's working as a medic and has to put the patients down. She tells her husband Travis when she's bit. The lucky ones were told while the rest of them just died to the roamers that turned without notice.

After watching many shows and reading many books. It takes a special kind of person to be a leader when people can die. The reason is that any person will naturally react "they died, it is my fault. I picked that course for us to take. They are dead because of me" A leader can push through that and continue to lead. Not through callousness, or lack of emotion. And not a downward spiral of emotion that paralyzes decision making. But somewhere in between. I also heard from someone that a leader will take on the burden of failure for the team, and then give the credit of successful action to the team. Absorb the failures and project the successes. That is extremely important. When you see a leader blame their team for failure... get far away from that person. They are poison.

It makes sense. It killed most and killed people over varying degrees of time. And those that remain had, not an immunity, but some genetic difference that made them carriers. It's why it spread so fast despite the zombies being so ineffective in an actual combat situation. Most everyone on the planet succumbed and turned without ever having been bitten.

Well at first before I knew that it was in all of them I thought of a cure but it wasn't necessarily a medicine care it was more of a not always successful kind of cure see where herselle green ( I think I spelled it wrong ) actually survived by and that was the first time I ever survived one just all you had to do was chop off the infected area but if you were bit anywhere in your torso then you was going to die so it wasn't always going to be effective but now that I see that it's in them if you get bit and how does it help it spread does it bring it to life and there can't be a cure for it if it's already in them you can just try to chop off the infected area but it might not work all the time so that's a question for the people to decide?

Robert Kirkman revealed in an interview not long after the TWD Comics ended that the Virus is an Extraterrestrial Spore (no doubt a homage to the Night Of The Living Dead) and this explains how EVERYONE on the planet got infected in such a short amount of time because Spores travel primarily in the air (anyone with a basic understanding of Microorganisms would know this) but this also reveals that a cure or vaccine would never work because the pathogen is always present in the air so the only way to truly get rid of it would be to purge it from the atmosphere in it’s entirety somehow.
