I have rearranged the breeding pens again. This time, I’ll produce a generation of chickens that are 3/8 Ceylon. I talk about it a little bit in this video which I hope no one watches because I hate the sound of my voice.

I took Killer hunting this morning and again I was unimpressed. It was a tough morning but we killed two. The first one was treed along with Tim’s dog, Junior. The last one was honestly Killer by himself. He tried to grub one up several times before he finally got ahold of one that was on the outside.

    • @pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219

      No. This project started with an F1 grey hybrid rooster and domestic hens. I’ve used other F1 hybrid roosters since then. This method will ensure that the percentage of jungle fowl blood in the group is 25% to <50%.

    Good looking birds. I’ll be curious to see what your fertility is like and how well the chicks raise up. Crossing F1 birds is almost impossible but these might have just the right amount of domestic DNA to make it work. I crossed my F1 50% Ceylon with my only F2 50% Grey and got a few chicks. Using the F1 50% Grey hen I only ever got one pair.

    Man…those are looking good! I’ve had the same issue with them eating tails. Sucks when I’m trying to breed for tails and I can’t evaluate them. Supposed to be a lack of methionine and new feed has helped. Still seem to get egg eaters as well.

    Would you ever sell eggs or fowl and are your f1/f2 hens fertile. I’ve been wanting to mix my flock with grey jungle fowl but I’m having such a hard time finding any and have heard hens are usually sterile.

    • @pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219

      I do sell eggs from time to time but I’d rather sell young birds, as buyer typically gets better bang for their buck that way. And yes F1 hens are fertile, though not prolific. F2 hens are typically fully fertile and about as productive as a game hen.

      Yeah, thanks Rob! He’s off the F1 Grey and one of my old line Bengal hens so he’s around 7/16ths Grey JF. He’s one of the most “junglefowly” birds of ‘23. The Grey F1 (his daddy) is still alive and breeding, but his mama, the last of the old line birds, died about a month ago. But before she did I got a whole bunch of young birds this year from those two. Several really nice stags. Needless to say, they’ll be used extensively for as long as possible. I’ll try to make a video with a bunch of them in it

    Can we take them to purity of Ceylon in next gen by repeating Ceylon male with hybrid hen. Asking as we have access to ceylon male but no hen available.

    • @pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219
      @pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219 2 роки тому

      No, but you can make them appear more and more like a pure Ceylon, the more you backcross to your pure male. The problem then becomes that you’ve produced a bird that could be mistaken for a pure Ceylon, and could pollute the pure genome if they aren’t labeled correctly when/if they’re sold. As long as they’re “chickens” and not “jungle fowl”, you will be okay. Just have to make sure they aren’t passed off as pure Ceylon JF

    • @amazingaviculture6948
      @amazingaviculture6948 2 роки тому

      @@pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219 Ethically I'll follow the rule of not passing hybrid bird. Am from Pakistan and there is no way we could pollute wild JF as they are endemic to Srilanka. Pakistani courts passed an order in Feb 2022 banning all ground birds import. Currently there are two lonely males in private cage in whole country. Initially i thought it might produce mules but after watching your bird seems there is a chance to at least try to bring the beauty back.

    • @pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219
      @pumpkinvinewreckingcrew6219 2 роки тому

      @@amazingaviculture6948 in that case I would suggest breeding your male to a grey jungle fowl hen, and start from there trying to select for Ceylon traits in the offspring and breed the best ones back to a pure Ceylon male.
